  1. I personally like Sony - been using VAIO laptops for years, PS3, Sony video cameras, Sony digital cameras. They suck at a lot of things, but are good at a lot of things. I'll be buying a PS4, but not this year. It'll take a few months to get the most significant bugs out. After that, there will be updates, but I can live with updates. Probably early next year, I'll get a PS4 ... Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  2. I'm so glad to know that you didn't understand this, either. Something about cigarettes and people. Sometimes, I wonder if people are rambling speech into a recording device that translates it (poorly) to text and posts on these forums. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  3. Saw it last night and loved it. Admittedly, I am really into stunning visuals, and this one delivers! Jodi Foster was brilliant. As far as which movies it's inherited from, I really saw a lot of THX-1138 in this one. Oppressed working class, treating humans like machinery, hero is helping to build the robots that are controlling the humans, and take a pill to fix everything! There was homage to Empire Strikes Back, when the robo-droids come out of the 'mothership', searching for the 'rebels', which I loved. Brain-hacking was reminiscent of Neuromancer. People are going to whine that the movie is politicized, because people today are blaming either Bush or Obama for everything. Ever hear of dystopian fiction? These themes are standard fare: wealth inequality (e.g. Soylent Green), class warfare (the list here is endless), standard of medical care (e.g. Gattica), technological overseers (e.g. THX-1138). This movie borrowed from a lot of themes, and it played up a few that inspire emotion in the current state of affairs. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  4. I pitched hemp-flavored Doritos to Frito-Lay. They were not amused. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  5. Yeah, but it's a standard clause in America that the only bat-shit crazy public figures are musicians and artists. Maybe reality TV Stars Every other public figure is kinda expected not to vow to bring down the government Especially over such an issue as gay marriage. That having been said, I really enjoyed the Ender's series, and I like Harrison Ford, so I will definitely be seeing the movie. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

  7. For those that didn't really, really read the post, the underlying message is that Obama has already done many of these things, and he's a half-step away from the others. Which is Card's way of saying he's crazy without the political implications of being crazy. Here's another few things he has to say, in other posts, in which he intended to be serious: This dude is a candidate for Speaker's Corner (Speaker For The Dead's Corner?). 11. Card is a LDS (Mormon), so it's not surprising that his views correspond with that of his Church. I enjoyed Ender's series when I was a kid. I'm afraid to re-read them prior to the movie, because I'm afraid I will hate it as an adult. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  12. Ah-ha! Now we finally know why the NSA is spying on the Internet with their PRISM program. You know, if we could all use it to track the source of news stories, it might actually be worth the billions of dollars that we paid for it. Just sayin'. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  13. So you're implying that I should stop doing this, as well? The first 40 million spams I sent out haven't netted me the perfect women yet, but I know for a fact there are over 3 billion email addresses in the world, and I've just scratched the surface. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  14. No, I am looking for a good looking, fit, educated woman a with a decent personality. This guy is looking for a fashion model that went to an IVY league school and still has low enough self-esteem that she bows to his whims. That narrows the possibilities a bit. 18. I'm always amazed to hear fellow skydivers pooh-pooh others' achievements. I wouldn't jump out, handcuffed, inside a coffin. Would you? Sure, he's been practicing escapistry for his entire life, but that doesn't downgrade the difficulty of the jump. It just means he's good at his craft. Personally, I think it's a little reckless, and if things went wrong, the media would focus more on the skydiving (thus making us look bad), rather than the escape art. As it was, things went right, and there was little fanfare. Too bad. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  19. Unless, like my brother, you are allergic to it. In which case, you will be vomiting into the freshly opened wound of your knee, causing gangrene and have to have your leg amputated. When I had LASIK done, I got *both* valium and demerol. That was nice
  20. I looked this up after you posted about it, and I found it interesting enough to share. Probably the building techniques used by the Egyptians for the Great Pyramids was simpler than we thought, as well: Wallyhenge Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

  23. Yeah, like any of us would have a say in that. Be the same thing as here - the wealthy would send the poor over there to exploit the planet for every resource until it's dead, then go looking for another one. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  24. Our modern definition of "slavery" is quite a bit different than the definition at the time. The evidence suggests the Egyptian royalty used conscripted workers and trained them, gave them food (which was a good reward in that time period), and trained them to do the job of building the pyramids. These days, being conscripted in the US is tantamount to slavery. As an example, we are one of the few countries in the world that no longer requires military service of men, and that is a revolutionary idea for such a powerful nation. In other countries, men are conscripted for service - i.e. their choice is irrelevant in the matter. I consider that slavery, but my grandfathers all considered it their duty to serve (and all of them did) in World War 2. In that age, people were used to their families and country telling them what to do, and they didn't question. Slavery? It's a matter of opinion. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
