  2. I'll always remember him for those fast-montages where he travels back and forth between New York and London, in Snatch. I don't know why, but the repetition of cab-shot-Concorde-passport-cab in like two seconds always makes me laugh. Then he ends it with a great line, like "Shut up and sit down, you big, bald fuck!" 7. I heard a rumor that one of France's most notorious criminals broke out of prison the day before the heist. Very much like a high-budget action thriller! Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  8. I've hung out with Remi before, just because he sucks pretty bad at mini golf, and it makes me look like a pro when I play against him. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  9. Part of the problem is that many of us actually KNOW each other and hang out socially. We need to stop doing that to become the truly alienated, introverted a-holes that comprise most online forums. Fag. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  10. The driver has already accepted the blame and stated that he wants to die Of course, that won't stop the media from skewering him. Already they have said he "seeks the thrill of going fast" because he posted a social media picture of the speedometer of the train. I call B.S. - that doesn't mean he's a speed-thrill-seeker. If I was driving a train and it was going that fast, I would take a pic, too, just because it's cool, not because I'm addicted to speed. This guy has 30+ years of experience operating trains. I doubt he would have gotten this far if he wasn't used to following the rules. As far as what is in place, what the norms are, etc, well, it's Spain! Corruption in politics and government are the norm. Just because it's a high-speed train, and it's a good idea, or even a rule, to have automated speed reduction; that doesn't mean the Spanish government will do it. And just because those safety measures exist, that doesn't absolve the driver from responsibility (queue AAD discussion here). Machines exist to increase the safety of human operation, not to be relied on; they just aren't that good, yet. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

  13. Why do things have to have a purpose? The Earth is a place of opportunity, and if a life-form can evolve that sucks the blood out of other creatures and thrive, then it will. Just look at lawyers. Face mites. They live on your face, crawl around your pores, have sex on your nose, and eat your skin cells. There is no point! It's just another opportunistic life-form: http://dodustmitesbites.com/demodex-mites/ Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  14. I've been diving and teaching with wireless for over 10 years. I spend a lot of time in the pool, and go on scuba trips once a year or so. It was only an issue once in Costa Rica, when the battery on BOTH the sender and computer died. I knew my surface air consumption, and could easily count breaths and monitor depth, but that isn't something I would expect novice divers to do. I think if you stick to some of the better brands (I'm on uwatec/scubapro) and get yearly equipment service, there isn't much to worry about. [email] Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

  17. I recall being part of a conversation involving two other men, quite a bit younger than I that went like this: "Man, I miss the old skits on SNL!" I'm thinking this guy is too young to remember the old ones, so I ask "you mean with John Belushi and Dan Akroyd?" "No, I mean with Dana Carvey and Phil Hartman." Just goes to show what a long-standing tradition that show is. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  18. Hooray! Now, if we can retrofit some rockets for takeoff. And climb. And maybe descent. It might be as fast as a 182. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
