  1. 44" from loop - loop. a caveat to be considered = this is used on a C Flex rig deploying a free packed Lightning 2 - 4 seconds after exit. most people think this is too short, but it works for me and pulls the PC up against the rings quite nicely. be safe kleggo
  2. our recent visit to CSS revealed the cleanest toilet / shower facilities that i have seen at ANY DZ that i've visited in the past 25 years. They also have impressive airlift capability, a large very well organized hangar and well qualified mechanics and pilots to keep the turbines humming. Bravo to the staff at the Fayard's home base. shame about all the liquid sunshine though sigh be safe kleggo
  3. __________________________________________________ he certainly is, just ask him or better yet just watch him, he is very smooth. as to learning top docking via the internet ??????????????????????????????????????????? you will learn far more in a day of doing two way with an experienced person than you will in a lifetime of reading bits on a monitor. come out and play. be safe craig
  4. ROTFLMAO I just can't stop laughing, this definitely made my day
  5. i wish you the best. every time i would see their advert. i'd wonder if you were going to try for this opportunity. but then i also remember you raggin on ottley about his el cap jump photo................. is there a convenient marina close by? be safe kleggo
  6. Hank's place was a few blocks away and right in the middle of Perris on "D" street . . . __________________________________________________ in the top floor of what is called the Chief movie theatre if my memory serves correctly. My first rig off student status was a double ripcord [ complete with an unmodified BLASTHANDLE], horribly garish orange and green piglet with tapewells (?) ( a cutaway method with red nylon tabs sewn to the release mech.). I got to use them once during a canopy transfer on my 4th CReW jump. i thought the piglet main was too small, so i jumped a DK dactyl instead. my best and my thanks to Hank. be safe kleggo
  7. __________________________________________________ One guy with over 100 jumps didn't know how to assemble his 3 rings. __________________________________________________ Stop it. one word to him that may teach volumes CReW. or perhaps learn enough CReW to be proficient. be safe kleggo
  8. As for base versus skydiving, base IS skydiving, __________________________________________________ WOW You certainly have opportunities to learn, ( as do we all). I hope you decide to get a bit more open minded if you want to stay alive. use of aerodynamic deceleration devices to ensure continued participation, does not mean that they are equivalent activities. learn be safe kleggo
  9. __________________________________________________ with that ugly weather and the unhapy faces, that must have been the year we refused the permit to jump due to the high river water conditions. kleggo
  10. __________________________________________________ oh. that clarifies everything. thanks kleggo
  11. it DOES NOT usually look like that. not in my world anyway. many CReW folk like to joke about stuff hanging out, but that photo reveals a wee bit-o-excess in the hangy out department. i know few dz's in the usa that would let you get on a plane geared like that, very few. and do i understand that they were basically PCA ing the one guy out the door???? that could get interesting depending upon plane; type, speed, attitude. yahoo kleggo
  12. nice stories plastic. thanks 4 sharing mike does love the DDS! we did a few several years ago when we were doing 16 ways at sebastian for Normans movie. i'm sure they weren't as spinning as fast as a 4 way, but they did have their charm . be safe kleggo
  13. Ron wrote __________________________________________________ QuoteBill wrote well about the open finish. And I am sure that Parachutist, Skydiving, and Skyleague will go on about it as well...And they should, it was one of the most exciting battles I have seen. But for me personally my battle was not overshadowed by the open gold race. __________________________________________________ snip hmmmmmmmm interesting account but wow, i've been jumping since '81, mostly doing CReW and huge chunks of the narrative used terms completely unfamiliar to me. ie, Round three....Well the funny thing is our Zig marqs suck. Our boogie blocks sucked and the technical blocks were pretty good. Also our 11's never really worked well. We blew the third '21' and ran out of time coming back. or well we only ever trained block 16 with the memory going to the rear. We planned on having 16 go either way, or E-17-14. with our engineering it was a double slot switcher with all Round formations. kleggo
  14. Ah yes, my favorite. guess what? even though F-111, ( a nylon brand / marketing designation), is no longer made, it's porosity specification was 0 - 3 cfm. 0 as in zero porosity. Now manufacturers create a fabric simply known as 0-3 cfm ripstop nylon. then they treat it so that it becomes what most people call zp fabric. newer / better / lighter / less bulky fabric now being manufactured and is on the way if you are willing to spend the $$$$$$$ isn't learning wonderful? be safe kleggo
  15. Short answers since we've already discussed my typing skills 1. We try to never put our feet below the slider. While in the stack we have out hands outstreched above us holding the A lines just below the line attachment points. Our feet end up wherever depending upon individual reach / height. We try for line docks, ( slider just below the feet, bottom skin just above the hands), not slider docks. Anytime spent below the slider is time better spent doing other things. 2. Yes occasionally you will get caught on the bottom skin of the leading edge. You can reduce the chance of this occurence by "scrunching" you head down and forward while forcing your elbows away from and behind your shoulders as you pass your melon past the leading edge. remember to go up the lines gently. Slamming your feet into their line attachment point imparts energy into the stack and that's a no-no. further info available telephonically be safe kleggo
  16. a few comments and clarifications to Tom's as-usual eloquent posting, he must type far better than i do to communicate so well........ QuoteHopefully 2 way will bring MORE competitors into the sport. __________________________________________________ Agreed. I think that to truly grow the sport, there needs to be a 2 way category that incentivises new / intermediate jumpers to buy gear / train and compete. Perhaps a category where you have one experienced pilot and one beginner / intermediate pilot that do not have to compete against the experts. I know that in my recent experience at the US Nationals, i had a great time doing 2 way with an intermediate level jumper. We both felt it was a fun learning experience. __________________________________________________ Do PD sell the new canopy??? You need to talk to the factory. If you are a world class CRW competitor, then they will sell you the canopy on the following proviso's: it is NOT, I repeat, NOT a fully tested canopy according to PD's normal exacting standards - they have not and by the sounds of things will not release the canopy to the general market. Hence, YOU have to accept that what you are jumping is experimental. They currently do not have the resources to back the sale up with R&D. They will provide normal service repairs (lines, damage, etc) but probably no design/modification work. No off the shelf canopies either, i.e. you have to pay for and order your gear and wait for it to arrive. THIS IS WHAT I THINK - IT MAY BE TOTALLY INCORRECT - CHECK WITH PD. ________________________________________________ You seem to have your finger firmly on the pulse of the situation. It is my understanding that the canopies are not for sale to anyone at any price. but PD, as with many cutting edge companies is often looking for "outside consultants" to refine their design. I have no idea if they are looking for additional consultants. And i too must say THIS IS WHAT I THINK - IT MAY BE TOTALLY INCORRECT - CHECK WITH PD. They do treat the 107's and smaller versions as non-production hardware. The canopies i was jumping are clearly marked EXPERIMENTAL on the data panel. __________________________________________________ Yep - you will get the argument that you should start with the best possible gear first and I agree. But it will not help you one iota if your technique is sub standard. _________________________________________________ Once again i am forced to say me too. I think that you will be well served by training / learning / growing while jumping Lightnings loaded at 1.6 lb/ft^2 or greater. Their relatively steep angle of attack appears to work well for sequential teams. Keeping the cells inflated during canopy / body contact is a very good thing. _________________________________________________ If you want to spend big and buy new immediately, talk to the USA sequ guys - they have the jump numbers and experience to give you more info. The CA team that won the sequ several years ago used express as far as I know and the current mob use the new PD. ______________________________________________ Just to clarify, Clean Air the current US and World Champion Sequential team are jumping PD canopies. Redline, the CA mob, and former World Record Holders and Champions have jumped Expresses in the past. They are now jumping their own experimental canopies that i can't tell you about. Please try to attend the CF world record this November in Lake Wales Florida. you will have the opportunity to meet those pilots that Tom refers to that have had significant input on PD's CReW canopies. _________________________________________________ . Check out http://ozcrw.tripod.com/. If you can give ANY feedback, please do so. I hope you find it useful. _________________________________________________ Reading the info at this site is well worth your time. I made it required reading for our 2 rotation virgins prior to starting practice for this year. be safe kleggo
  17. Which begs the question - why was he doing CRW with it? perhaps because that is the only container he has? perhaps because he was hoping to have his reserve unpacked for him? perhaps because he did not consider it an issue? perhaps because he did not consider it at all? hard to say without directly asking the person involved. be safe kleggo
  18. 4 way sequential after 6 rounds 1. Clean Air 2. Red Line 3. Arizona Frayed Knot 4. Four play ( Alan's team from florida) Now we start 8 way kleggo
  19. Interesting or that they can charge those prices and stay in bussiness. Are they a full service DZ? they have sweet airplanes that they fly well, that's a good start for a "full service DZ" in my book. Swimming pool i've seen some inflatable kiddie pools on occasion. , bathrooms, only the finest. snack bar, bill and cathy sell snacks Bar, bill let's you drink your own beverages as you see fit. AC packing area, that's pretty funny. free parking free parking? for what? planes? bicycles? trucks? etc. they got a whole lot of etc. going on. try it and see. kleggo
  20. What is meant by direct vs. indirect slider control? And what _are_ the bennies/drawbacks? :) please see tom begic's cogent reply above and consider that C line stowage = direct Slider control = slider is directly fastened to a c line via a rubber Tail pocket stowage = indirect slider control = slider cannot come down the lines, ( very far ), until the last tail pocket stow releases. be safe kleggo
  21. T wrote "Basejumpers use a rubber band on the center C-line attachement point to ensure the slider stays all the way up until linestretch. I don't get why crew jumpers rely on the center stow of the tailpocket for this?" good question. some answers follow; 1. not all CReW jumpers use a tail pocket, many use a standard D bag for deployment. 2. very few CReW jumpers understand the benefits / drawbacks of direct slider control VS indirect slider control, because as strange as it may seem, there isn't much cross over between CReW and BASE. consider entering the BASE section and search for direct slider control or indirect slider control, for further information. be safe kleggo BASE 93
  22. will be in carlsbad california this evening. http://nctimes.com/articles/2005/08/10/news/top_stories/18_51_188_9_05.prt for a forum on illegal immigration if you want to see the man that has made a few bold statements concerning backcountry parachuting rights.
  23. Hi, i misplaced your phone number. If someone can provide his contact info, i'd be grateful. thanks kleggo [email protected]
  24. Why the hell are you using the LRM if you have never landed on rear-risers before? probably because by doing so one puts themself in the position where an injury is relatively likely during the course of this training exercise. there is a very real possibility of flaring too high or too deeply and slamming onto your ass / back / neck / skull. the only time i've landed on rr was many years ago when a lower control line connection failed, ( on a skydiving canopy ). It was a Pegasus so i was able to get away with a very low, shallow flare that i PLFd away from. I would not espouse the theory that people should intentionally land on rr alone. Do some no contact CReW with someone and do rr flares. You'll probably learn enough canopy dynamics to understand what's required when forced to land this way. in the LRMod situation i would recommend tossing the good toggle away so you're not tempted to land with one rr and one toggle.......... OUCH. be safe kleggo
