???????????you drive to the location. I see plenty of spots to park. it's an open road, correct. park nearby. jump out walk a couple hundred feet into the woods. take some photo's and leave?

Well, if wants to go out there BEFORE the scheduled search, that's up to him. You pays your money, you takes your chances. That doesn't affect our effort at all. Personally, I wouldn't try doing trespass up that 1600 Road for all the tea in China. But Eric's a big boy and if he wants to try it, that is up to him. Long damn walk though.

No need for hundreds of pics and miles of video...short and simple..I'll send my drone to your location as a lookout..

If SWAT shows up, I start to wonder what the hell is really going on with this DB Cooper case.

I do have the GPS coordinates. At the end of the day, I don't think anyone is going to give a $#!+ if some guy conducting research walks onto the property. After all, it's not a commercial endeavor. If I arrive and someone kicks me off of the property, I just leave. Simple as that. In the words of Joan of Arc, "I am not afraid...I was born to do this."
  7. mrshutter45

    DB Cooper

Robert, this has nothing to do with you. he's going there before your event. it's out in the middle of nowhere. I doubt Swat will get involved. and, I doubt he will be there very long. sometimes, you just have to live on the edge.

If you were 'talking' to Eric, you would private message him. You are posting to a public forum, and that is different. You think he will do just fine? You must not care about him very much on a personal level. If he shows up at the campsite after walking for miles on foot, after we warned him all he had to do is like everyone else does on these AB campouts...and register for their own safety...I will simply pick up my smartphone, dial the Weyerhauser security number...and have them come talk to him. He could jeopardize our entire permission slip with Weyerhauser, and I won't risk that. Stop giving him bad advice. I never said he couldn't go. Why would he want to try a trespass, walk for miles, etc when he can just join the legitimate group like everyone else? It's foolish. EDIT: And if he does that...he ain't gettin' no free BBQ either.

    DB Cooper

I was talking with Eric. I don't see any problems with what he's doing. he's a grown up and can tend to himself. he may not be from there but I think he will do just fine... Thanks for the concern....

Shutter: You are not helping Eric by encouraging him to do that. First off, the 1600 road that leads to the OTHER road is Weyerhauser's main access between their Headquarters Road location and the placard road site. Logging trucks go back and forth all day. It's VERY dangerous. Second, if Weyerhauser Security catches you, you will go to jail or they will deliver you to the cops and file a complaint, since they cannot issue tickets. Third, leaving your car unattended at one of their gates for a long period of time is just ASKING for people to shoot holes in it. Happens all the time up here, unfortunately. You are not doing him any favors by irresponsibly suggesting he walk miles down a main logging road simply to get pictures he could obtain LEGITIMATELY anyway. In order to discourage both of you from this silly action, I have emailed the Land Use Manager and told her that no one has permission to enter that area and associate themselves with the search unless their name is on the official list we have to submit to them. So far, there are four names on it, and Eric's is not currently one of them. Besides? Why walk for miles when you can simply DRIVE there legally? Your suggestion is foolish at best, dangerous at worst.

Great Eric, very simple and to the point. no long post or explanation. you don't have GPS capabilities?
  12. RobertMBlevins

    DB Cooper

EU - If you want to go along, I don't have a problem. But you will have to register like everyone else. The access road is gated and you need permission from Weyerhauser to enter, as well as a key to the gate. You could trespass if you wish, but it's many miles between the gate and the actual site. Long walk. Better if you just come along with the official group. I will have all the registration information ready at WordPress, the AB main site, and Quora later tonight. There is an early-bird notice at Quora already that was sent out to our 700+ followers just minutes ago. You can see it HERE.

I spent 1 hour so far in one an would like to go back but it's in KC an Im in NE so it's a bit of a drive so I wait till others go so I can hitch a ride. lol. Come to Redemption Boogie if you can make it. I'll jump with you anytime.

I'm going to be in that area within a few weeks. I will "trespass" and get some shots from the spot or very close to the spot. I am very curious myself.

    BSBD Darrell Dunafon

Shortly after Darrell's passing we held a silent auction during his ash dive to raise money for a memorial to hang at Skydive San Marcos, his mom and dad drove from Tucson to attend. It was a cathartic event for Darrell's family, Skydiver and BASE friends. The event brought some closure to the many who loved and respected him. Darrell's memorial, a stained glass piece has hung in the packing room at SSM for over 9 years. When Skydive Spaceland purchased SSM they had a different esthetic in mind for their DZ and removed all the photos and art from the walls and left them available for whomever wanted them. Unfortunately Darrell's glass was in the mix. I'd like to thank Thomas the DZM and all the staff at Skydive Spaceland San Marcos that I spoke to today for helping today in my search for this commemoration to a life well lived. I would very much like to recover this art for his parents who grieve for their son every day and will, until the end of days. Darrell's glass is my avatar, i was unable to upload the image. Note: Lucky, your post was unkind.

No worries. We will get the shots you want. Nick emailed me just now, says he's pretty stoked. I'm just glad I talked him OUT of buying a plane ticket two weeks ago. He was going to do that, but I made him wait because I didn't know how Weyerhauser would react to my request on the search. Before all of this (we're going..no...we're not...okay we ARE) stuff happened, our basic plan was like this: We travel to the spot on Friday morning, June 21 and set up camp. We check out the search gear, and spend the rest of the day doing pictures and deciding which areas we will try to search. Saturday and Sunday we do the main search, see if we find anything. When it gets later in the day, maybe we do some Cooper-related activities on site with video. Maybe a discussion, Darren's podcast, stuff like that. Monday morning we head for home. Hopefully it will be more than just the three of us. I have to start creating the articles etc to let people know how they can come along if they wish. Sixty days until June 21 will go by faster than everyone thinks. No campfires allowed, but we will just fire up the stove at night from the propane tanks instead. That will have to do. And we pack out all the garbage. I always do that anyway.

What I'm implying is ground view shots.....taken from a camera on the spot would benefit the case. not the actual location that's been well established and documented. I'm interested in what the area looks like from ground level. not from the air which can be found in multiple ways. I've been testing the characteristics of the card with drop tests. it doesn't just tumble as some believe. I'm curious to the area's landscape from the ground to see how it's believed a one ounce card never moved in 7 years. today the wind was in the upper 20's and the card didn't stay stationary. it blew around several times. the forest is different since it will block some of the winds but getting a better view will help in this debate.

Don't be a smart alec, Shutter. Even Google doesn't take ground level pictures of places where a gate prevents you from getting your Magic Google Photo Car in there. And they generally don't do those views from wilderness roads miles from the freeway anyway. You go ahead and try to find some ground level shots of the exact spot, like Google does with homes and businesses. The ones where you can zoom in close enough to read the numbers on the house. Not happening. I knew two weeks ago the land was privately owned. But Weyerhauser is funny sometimes. Some roads are gated with restrictions, others are open because THEIR roads sometimes are the only way in to publically-owned Forest Service areas. So access there is fine. It's hard to tell without inquiring with them first. About ten days ago I finally sent the Land Use Manager to the WordPress article with the interactive map, and explained what we were trying to do. She just decided to cut us a break and go along with our plan. That's all. I already forwarded this information to the appropriate people and deleted the OTHER article saying we were going to Oregon. I would be a fool to say no to her offer. EDIT: I thought you WANTED a search of the area, saying it would be useful. Now that we got permission, and they waived the permit fee, you sound doubtful about it. So let me ask you now: Are you in favor of our plan to search the area, or not? Or is the problem simply because I was the one who organized it? FYI: If you would rather discuss this offline, I have not blocked PM's from you, although the email thing is still in place. But I didn't cut you off completely. One more thing: I keep trying to understand what it is you are asking for. If you want pictures at ground level, well...there will be hundreds to choose from when we return from this search in June. I can't do it right now. But afterward, sure...there will be a video, plenty of stills, probably other Cooper-related activities we shoot during the trip. Yes, I will make all of that public. Darren S also wants to do a podcast out there.

I didn't "request" photo's I've seen looking up myself. it's the actual area where it was found. I also notice you finally figured out it was private property. amazing, coming from a guy in Florida Ground view...exact spot. no sat. pic, or Google 3D will show this...

Oh, my God....just when I had written OFF the idea of a search in June in the placard area...(you aren't going to believe this)... I just got a message from the Land Use Manager at Weyerhauser. It says: What did I do after seeing this message? You're not going to believe this either. I told the manager we would do the search. I must be crazy. And I think some folks at Infamous Nissan are going to be disappointed. I decided even if we only get four people for the search, since we have permission (and no fee) to enter and search the land, I'm going to go ahead and take a chance on it. Especially since I get the gate key for free four-day use. Geez, Louise. Now I have to delete the current Oregon trip WordPress post and write up a new one. Have to give the bad news to Infamous Nissan. Have to change some entries at the main AB website. Reminds me of the scene with actor Steve Buscemi in the film, Armageddon. I guess we're GOING. If anyone in Cooperland is interested in participating in this campout/search, it will run from Friday morning, June 21 until the following Monday morning on the 24th. And even if no one else goes, I am not passing up this opportunity. I'm told also there may be a deposit required for the gate key, but no permit fee. It was a no-brainer. I had to say yes.
  25. RobertMBlevins

    DB Cooper

As requested, I ran up some still photos of the area where the placard was found, as well as the two closest campsites. Logging trucks use the main road occasionally and throw dust, so you don't want any base camp too close to the main road. In this picture above, you are actually facing a bit southwest. Extreme Google Map close up of placard location. These images are taken from space, so this is about as good as it gets. Facing northeast in this picture. The airliner would be moving over this area from left to right.
  26. I have a Kestral 1000, and have found it to be very good, however, as I search for "handheld wind meter" I see many types and prices. I don't see why a cheaper one would not be as good as my Kestral if all you need is wind speed. Others have many other functions that you may not need to be paying more for.

    Shelf life on containers?

really Rob? So a harness that was made from neon pink that shows fading within 6 months has lost half it's strength while the black harness still looks great after 10 years hasn't lost anything?
  28. Does anyone have any pointers (this is great don't buy this) on electronic wind speed indicators? I searched and there is a wide variety. A friend suggested I focus on those used by boat owners. Thoughts?
