Here is a list over the canopies I have flown.
As a student:
Navigator 260
Nvaigator 240
Navigator 220
Raider 220

Off student status: (round 35 jumps)
Clipper 214
PD 190 (10 y.o. at least one reline. Horrible landings)
Hornet 170

I now got 150+ jumps on the Hornet (loaded a little under 1.2). (230+ in total)
The cool thing is that I feel I'm just begining to learn to fly the Hornet. I'm really looking forward to putting a few hundreds more jump on that when the jump season opens again here in Norway.

First student canopy: Falcon 260 (exit weight about 150#).
A few jumps on a Raider 220.
A few jumps on a PD 190.
A few jumps on a Pro 170.
Bought a Falcon 150 @about 30 jumps, jumped it for about 100 jumps.

I was lucky. Don't downsize that fast. Even though I still only ended up with a 1:1 loading under that 150, it was way faster than what I initially trained under, and that nearly bit me in the butt pretty good once.

I'd recommend buying a good used canopy (i.e., one your instructor thinks is suitable for you and that is in good shape). There are plenty of them out there.

Thanks for all the great info guys and gals. You all have helped open my eyes and give me a lot of options. To all you big guys here, I feel ya... Im 6'1 220 so I will be flying a big ole canopy too. Years contact sports tends to pack on the meat. I am sure I am going to have a hard time finding a used container because of my measurements.

Thanks!
Oz

Isn't the BlueTrack an eliptical canopy.
When I bought my first (used) rigg the seller tried to sell me a canopy I think was BT60 (150 sqr/f).
Somehow, looking back I think I made a good call when I swapped it for an old beat-up pd 190 instead (allthoug the BT probably was worth at least twice what the PD was.)

Going from 220 student canopies at 0.9 to an eliptical 150 at 1.3 would not have been a very clever thing to do at sub 40 jumps. :S

My current canopy is the FIRST new one I got too. I went:
Used PD190
Used Sabre170
Used Sabre150
Used Sabre135
Used Stiletto120
Used Stiletto97
Now I have a new, custom colored Stiletto 89B|

Yes the BT is a semi eliptical. Mine was also a BT-60 at 173 sqr feet if memory serves. I had about 65 jumps when I bought it. It was ZeroP which made the deal even sweeter and I had people paying attention to me as I flew and giving coaching. That being said I only weigh about 150.

Very good choices there. Stay with used for now, though. You'll understand in a 50 - 500 jumps as to why.

I'm now on my second and third complete rigs, and I have yet to purchase new, though that will likely change this spring.
Oldest to present:
Vector II, Sabre 135, Cricket 145 reserve
*Javelin, Sabre 150, PD126R
Vector II, **Monarch 175, Swift + 175

*Main rig
**Precisions' "Sabre", my backup rig

Ordering new this year:
Mirage G3 and either a Samurai or a Nitron (leaning towards the Nitron)

p.s. The Mirage will be sized for my Sabre 150, for Birdman only. The new canopy will be of a size appropriate for my Javelin. It's always nice to have backups, and the total invested in all 3 rigs would still be less for me than buying one new, complete rig.

180 square foot, 5-cell Strato Star copy built by Niagara Parachutes.

Wasn't that more like 169 sq. ft.?

Strato-Stars are more like 180 square feet, when measured by the PIA method.
It seems that Manley Butler wrote the PIA measuring method while working for Para-Flite in the early 1980s and Para-Flite is one of the few canopy manufacturers that stuck with the PIA method.
I don't understand the measuring methods used by most other manufaturers.

I was borrowing a PD-190, before i bought a Sabre 190. Loved the sabre to death (still miss it a little).:)
