  1. Man this local news station is awesome, I've never seen local news do such a deep dive into what happened in an aviation incident (starting at 7:20): http://www.kake.com/home/headlines/Boeing-jet-lands-at-Jabara-Airport-232781081.html ... though it helps if the person doing the talking (weatherman) is also a pilot
  2. "ATC: Do you have a good idea where you are?" "Pilot: Yes... let me ask you this how many airports are there south of you" "ATC: Well... you're currently NORTH of us and there are three along the approach" "Pilot: Sorry, I meant north I'm looking at something else" CLEARLY. lol
  3. Convo with ATC is pretty awesome: https://m.soundcloud.com/buzzfeednews/747-lands-at-wrong-kansas
  4. Good question - I'd hate to know what would happen if the prince had to chop!
  5. I was wondering about that -- if the helmets that have the "feature" for connecting to O2 just have a port and the idea is the oxygen would kinda just "fill" the inside? if so it doesn't seem like it would be very efficient and I would be surprised if you got nearly as much oxygen into your system versus a cannula or mask
  6. Ah! thanks, my thinking on this is clear now. When I first read the original quote, I was thinking that the entire O2 hose would be with you the whole jump (i.e. you would disconnect from the PVC tube running the length of the aircraft). Connecting it as you describe with only a few inches at most poking out of your jumpsuit during the jump makes way more sense than having several feet trailing out cheers
  7. Is a flag slider the same as a pocket slider?
  8. Sounds like a good day for a cross country to me!
  9. what do you mean you people http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1iV24hL8Rk
  10. Thanks for the link--I've done high alt jumps so I know how the setup works inside the aircraft. I'm specifically interested in learning how helmets with O2 ports work, and how you would jump with the cannula on as described in the quote above

This is a great drop zone to visit if you're in the area or want to make a weekend out of it. The facilities are in great condition, and the landing area is good. The scenery is amazing under canopy--great views of the river, lake, and mountains. There are lots of things to do in the area for non-jumpers, so bring the family and spend a few days.
  12. I read the Master Skills Camp Handbook last night and this caught my eye: I'm not aware of any helmets that have this, and I have never heard anyone talk about this. Can someone show me an example of helmets that do this, and how it works? Edited: I see that the Cookie Gas (no longer manufactured) had an O2 port but I haven't been able to find any images that show how it functions Second question: Is the idea here that you have the cannula in your nose and the tube running down the inside of your jump suit's arm? That would leave the trailing tube free during free fall? Am I understanding that right? That seems like it would be a bad idea... I wouldn't want a plastic tube attached to my nose loose during a jump waiting to get snagged and ripped out or entangled... ...which makes me think I'm not understanding what this set-up would look like. i'm sure folks experienced with this type of jumping have a smart system for dealing with it all, I'm probably just not seeing it in my head right
  13. so how long until someone starts flying in the tunnel in tandem and we have to have THAT discussion again...
  14. I think MOST skydive tattoos are pretty crap but this one is bad ass
  15. Don't over think it and don't fill your head with a bunch of advice off the internet that might make you confused. Stick with your instructors advice and guidance and have them explain how to address your concerns.
  16. This. Since when does someone need outside validation in the form of a piece of paper to set goals and strive to get better? Who cares if out of towners set your state record that is way outside your skill level? What's your personal best? What is your local regular bigway best? Strive to beat that. Look to yourself and your regular jump buddies for validation and achievement, not a piece of paper and a short paragraph in Parachutist. The thing about this sport is that there is ALWAYS someone with more time, more opportunity, more money, or less life responsibility than you. That competitive disadvantage is a fact of life on the dz or off. Rather than try to find ways to make them ineligible to compete, keep building yourself up. It might take you ten times longer but if you keep making incremental progress eventually you'll be at the level where you can face off with them straight up.
  17. Rather than start a new thread I'll just tack on... it's a recurring thread! /rimshot I have recurring free fall dreams. They all involve some kind of mal and end with me barely getting the reserve out (i.e. reserve is barely inflated... maybe not even end cells... maybe only line stretch). Sometimes in the dream I get the reserve out, sometimes it is the AAD. I never get hurt and I always survive but it's always the same feeling of "i'm not going to survive this landing" right before impact. Usually it's a total mal. Hard pull on PC followed by handles that don't come all the way out --- pull and pull and pull and you get maybe an inch of cable. Last night I had a new one. PCIT and when I pulled the reserve rip cord, for some reason it was really long. Like ten feet long. So I had to loop it under my foot and extend my leg to pull it the rest of the way out. like the other dreams, reserve comes out and I plow in but am not hurt even though most times I know there is no way I should have even survived let alone not be injured. it's basically the skydiving equivalent of the paralyzed dreams where you're being chased by a guy with a machete and your feet are glued to the floor except it's you can't reach your pc/handles or when you do it won't budge. Oddly enough that is the only skydiving dream I ever have.
