  1. Completely fair point--I should say it is uncommon for these issues to come up in conversation, though it isn't unheard of. However, I don't know of any high profile jumper ever declining an invitation to participate or be sponsored by SD Dubai due to their host country's reputation. (If I understand correctly, the dz and multiple wind tunnels are owned by a prince, so the direct relationship between the country's policies and the DZ is pretty clear--anyone please correct me if that understanding is wrong)
  2. he doesn't want to let the squirrel out of the bag? though in general the skydiving community doesn't seem to have many qualms about these types of issues. Nobody ever really mentions that the UAE has a horrible human rights record, and that many of the buildings in the background of all those SD Dubai shots were build by migrants held captive and in deplorable conditions. It's a valid question though: to what degree should our sport take these issues into account when it comes to who we should support with our dollars. edited to add: not sure this is the right forum for it though -- maybe general or speakers or something ::shrug::
  3. awesome history lesson and great photo, thanks
  4. doh! web archive why didn't i think of that thanks for the link plus embedding the text. this thread can go back to sleep for another 13 years now cheers
  5. I know i'm digging in the past here but does anyone know if brian burke's opinion on knives is available somewhere on the intarwebs
  6. that's ok I can get my hands on their instructions--thanks!
  7. clever solution! what diameter hole did you make?
  8. Great info thank you for sharing. We are serious enough to train in the tunnel ~1 hour a month and participate in NSL meets but we don't travel and won't look to go to nationals until next year, so for now I'll go with the cx and get my feet wet but it's good advice on the importance of quality and judging. One of the reasons i went with the FTP aside from a fair price was the idea that I could use the platform in various configurations without having to struggle to make it all fit. I'll keep my eyes out for steals on other cameras and snap some up if I can. WRT the hypeye buttons, that was my fear. It really seems like I'll just go with gaffer tape on the plate rather than trying to mount them in a hole drilled into the plate or helmet.
  9. Awesome feedback -- I have seen the hdr-as100 but never really considered it. I will look into this more. For now, I have two cx 100s, one flatlock, and one hypeye so all I need to complete my kit is get another flatlock/hypeye. With so many tandems moving to handmount go pros, its a buyers market on cx100s. I can get two cx100s for half the cost of a new gopro black. ive had bad luck with gopros lasting more than a season, and the cx series has handy things like video playback, fastforward, etc. I'm not looking for HD quality per se just good enough so a judge can accurately score a FS jump. I got a good deal on a lightly used FTP, so that's the platform I'm going to start with. the seller has a larger top plate but couldn't find it, so it's possible if it turns up i'll be able to have more room. Does this mean you drilled a hole in the plate for just the button to be exposed? What size hole makes for the best fit -- i've heard that if the hole is too big when you push the button the whole unit can kind of sink. is there is a perfect size hole (or maybe using something like a gasket to help make it fit tight?)
  10. From what I've heard, this sounds like an IT project that went off the rails. This might be thread drift, but does anyone know anything about what happened? Poor software purchase? Bad contractors and/or internal staff fit with the needs of the project? Any future concern about the stability or longevity of the new system? Would hate to see our dues go into a money pit IT project
  11. That's great feedback, my plan is to go the gaffer tape route as that really was what i was hoping for. Less holes is probably for the best. I'll followup with a photo post to this thread once I have finalized it so future users who find this via search can see the outcome.
  12. I'm building my first "serious" camera helmet for filming 4way FS, and I'm looking for some info on configurations that have already proven effective. Any FTP camera flyers out there have some good pictures that show howbest to organize a multi CX100 setup with 2x liquid flatlocks and hypeyes? I have seen a few photos of this setup and a few in person at a distance but i'm interested in a more detailed breakdown. I've seen something similar to this: [inline diagram.gif] What I'm not clear on is how the hypeye is integrated into this kind of setup. What is a good placement for the hypeye buttons? The peeks I've gotten at this type of setup has the wires going down into the single hole drilled in the top plate. Where the buttons are from there wasn't clear to me.
  13. Because skydivers would never get involved with the drug trade ::cough::sugaralpha::cough
  14. Freedom tower is a for-profit commercial real-estate development project that leases office space to wall street firms. Trust me, nobody thinks of that tower itself as a sacred object. The two footprints next to it, however, is a different story.
  15. We jumped in an NSL meet on saturday and did no-grip point exits on a few and it worked out no problem. we did a good job of spending the extra time in the mock-up required to have everyone feel good about the setup and how the grips would look. we felt so good, we even launched a 2 successfully. We hadn't tried in any of our previous training jumps, but it worked pretty well.
  16. Made a few training jumps down south a few weeks ago, but you go where the team goes I'm itching for some cheeto-ways
  17. Put a winter's worth of 4way FS tunnel training to use in an NSL meet with my team--did 8 jumps from the A class NSL pool, finished with an 11 point average which was great as it was very block heavy. Capped it off with a 15 way sunset load: [inline sunset.jpg]

  19. I'll be sure to emphasize this particular point with my OC In all seriousness, thanks for the breakdown. I'll share all of it with my team. Both of the caravans at our two primary DZ have the 850 HP blackhawk conversion so there is a bit of prop blast for OC.
  20. SL out of 182; only planned on doing it once, figured if I did a tandem I wouldn't learn anything about myself. once I landed, instructor asked me if I was going to get my license. hadn't even crossed my mind until she asked. glad I did.
  21. I'm not sure what the back of a Protrack looks like, but with my Solo II, I have found that you need to be very sure that you have properly seated the battery door cover, and that you have properly threaded and fully tightened the screw that secures it. Shortly after changing batteries a short time ago I heard it beep a few times in my gear bag in the middle of the night. When I picked the unit up and looked very closely, when I squeezed on the door I could see a little movement/give. It was very subtle but enough to make the connection intermittent. Before sending it in, check to make sure you have properly closed it up nice and tight with no give. Edited to add: I looked on their web site and I see they have an image of the battery door. It is different than the Solo II but in a way I could see it being even easier to have a poor connection with this design: [inline LB_protrack02.jpg] If these two screws are not even or threaded right I bet that door will be too loose to force a consistent connection.
  22. God damn it 19 fuckin 79!! That means that there is absolutely nothing new, unique, or out of character about any of the drop zones I jump at. Same shit, different decade. Ok then!
