  1. Actually you can use a USB stick to improve system performance. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ReadyBoost
  2. I really couldn't care less if there are people out there who want to (or are indifferent to) jump out of sub-standard maintained airplanes. What bugs me is when a dropzone that has had run ins before with the FAA before manages to attract enough attention that the Secretary of Transport issues a statement. Skydiving is a small aviation activity that quite often flies under the regulation radar but high profile notice and reports in the media about stuff like this is not helping. I hate that one guy selfishly trying to save a few bucks on maintenance could end up costing everyone else lots of time and money.
  3. CSPA 3rd party liability insurance is good for bodily injury and damage to property to a max of 2 million dollars per occurrence. I don't know what USPA's max per occurrence is but I believe its a lot less than this. I have heard $50,000 but don't know for sure.
  4. There has been discussion about another hard drive application in freefall. How well do iPods work while jumping. Here is the thread. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=post_view_flat;post=1961701;page=2;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;mh=25; I think the consensus is its risky. The low air pressure at altitude may not provide enough air cushion between the platter and the head, risking damage to the drive.
  5. Does any one know where to get a line set in North America for an Atair Alpha 145? Yes, I know I can get one from the factory in Slovenia.
  6. Well Michel's attempt to break the world record for highest altitude skydive had a major setback today. does anyone know any more? Here is a link to a story about his balloon bursting. http://www.canada.com/regina/story.asp?id=745F95EE-3098-495B-8B3B-F40BD9536E03
  7. Looks like she did a tandem. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=286313;search_string=mandy%20moore;#286313
  8. What I did with my large rig is cutaway the main and put it in a separate carry on piece. I think most airlines allow two carry on pieces, and it was the only way I could carry my rig since it weighs 23-24 pounds.
  9. Here is a post Bill Hallett of Mirage Systems wrote about stainless steel hardware slipping. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=59793;search_string=search_string;#59793
  10. I believe the viper is a considerably different design from the Alpha/Space and Cobalt. Here is an old post by cobaltdan.http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=192885;search_string=alpha%20cobalt;#192885
  11. Actually both matrices and matrixes are correct. From dictionary.com: 1 entry found for matrixes. ma·trix ( P ) Pronunciation Key (mtrks) n. pl. ma·tri·ces (mtr-sz, mtr-) or ma·trix·es A situation or surrounding substance within which something else originates, develops, or is contained: “Freedom of expression is the matrix, the indispensable condition, of nearly every form of freedom” (Benjamin N. A mold or die. The principal metal in an alloy, as the iron in steel. A binding substance, as cement in concrete. Mathematics. A rectangular array of numeric or algebraic quantities subject to mathematical operations. Something resembling such an array, as in the regular formation of elements into columns and rows. See mter- in Indo-European Roots.] Just another geek posting
  12. Actually Skydekker you now need a main parachute packing endorsement to get your A CoP. To get that endorsement you are supposed to perform 10 supervised packs (by coach, instructor or rigger) and also complete a packing test consisting of clearing a minor entanglement and identifing the basic parts of the canopy. I think it used to be a requirement for the B but when they changed the Licenses a couple years back they include packing in the A.
  13. Here is a discussion of reversed risers. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=18285;search_string=reversed%20risers;#18285
  14. Iraq never had the ability to send 500,000 artilery shells per hour for several hours into a 20 million person metro area.

  16. Would it be possible to have a menu especially for the classifieds selling containers. Kind of like the ones used for selecting gear in profiles. It needs to have the main/reserve size or code for the size and harness size. Most people put in one or the other but not both on their ads. So you have to email them asking about all the info they forgot to include.
  17. Yeah I used to do that back when I had a hard opening on my sabre, (quite common) bought an Alpha and the problem magically disappeared.
  18. On windy days we sometimes break out the cargo chute and crazy carpet and go lawn sledding. It's pretty cool of course if you get going to fast the friction heats up the carpet and it can get pretty hot.

  20. Actually freefall near the moon would be faster with no atmosphere to slow you down you would continue to accelerate until you hit. Also even if you had a fully deployed parachute it wouldn't slow you down a bit, you would need a rocket pack or something.
  21. Why not do one on student gear? I guess if the leg straps aren't comfortable that's a consideration, but I did one on a manta from about 4.5 miles from my dropzone at 9500 ft and easily made it back. It was lots of fun.
