  1. I don't think he meant it the way that you took it. People are reluctant to talk about this stuff because when they do, they take shit in real life. Been there, done that. I suggested turtlespeed google for references to USPA. Now I suggest you do it too. There are plenty of old examples, and the bottom line is that nothing about the pattern of USPA's behavior has changed. It's still as self-serving as it ever was. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  2. "Results 1 - 10 of about 2,400 for "uspa sucks" group:rec.skydiving" The results page covers the period from 1996 through 2002. You will find a wealth of opinion--pro and con--on the doings of the BOD and the employees at headquarters. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. All I've noticed is your charm, so either I'm not terribly observant, or the person(s) who has(ve) accused you of being tactless is(are) overly sensitive to constructive criticism and unadulterated truth. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 8. I think that if they do let him out, he'll just do more ill deeds. His behavior is sociopathic, and he evidences no remorse whatsoever for any of his crimes. When we're young, we're taught to respect the old, as if reaching a certain age confers wisdom and kindness and other positive attributes. The truth is that age just emphasizes the flaws in our personalities, and this guy is seriously fucked up. rl Edited to add a PS to Jim: Lots of events do "things" to people, but we don't give everyone a free pass because they've had a bad experience or three. If it were the case what one has endured is an excuse for doing harm to others, then there would be no overcrowding in the jails because most of the criminals would be running around loose. 9. If you google "paternity fraud," you will find that this is one of the hot social issues of our day. Traditionally, the law assumes a woman's husband is the father of her child. Although there are now some states (12, I think) that have enacted laws to protect men from paying for non-biological, non-adopted children, in most states, a man who has established a parent/child bond is expected to go on paying, even after a paternity test proves he is not the biological father. A number of men have tried and failed to dispute their obligation to pay--if you google as I suggested, you'll see the cases--but that is slowly beginning to change because of activism by men's rights groups. The unfortunate consequence of this, I'm afraid, is that those men who know they are not the biological father of a child, but who have chosen to parent anyway, will be at risk of losing that child at the mother's whim. One can only hope that future laws will be crafted carefully enough to protect such men. 10. I have no objection to the "C" word when uttered by non-USians, particularly the English and Australians. I think the difference in my reaction is the attitude behind the word, more than the word itself. YMMV. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  11. If you ask, you should be allowed to downgrade from Vista to XP. http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/f/4/5f4c83d3-833e-4f11-8cbd-699b0c164182/royaltyoemreferencesheet.pdf Some laptops now come with webcams built in, which is handy. As for the router, just remember it isn't going to to do you any good when you're away from home using someone else's wireless connection. Get a good firewall. I know I said Outpost ($39), but Comodo's free firewall gets better ratings than most firewalls on the market, even the paid ones. If you don't want to pay for antivirus, and you do decide to use AVG, also get a copy of SuperAntiSpyware and SpywareBlaster, which are also free. I'm quite sure you're right, because I think you would have to buy Office Professional to get PowerPoint included, and it's not cheap. I was thinking more along the lines of having the laptop built where you're going to be, not where you are right now, because if you do the latter, you're going to be in the same boat as someone who orders from an OEM. It seems to me that there's a certain amount of comfort to be had in having a shop down the street where you can take your computer and say, "Hey you guys, you must've put it together the wrong way, because it's not working." Just don't buy Dell. Or if you absolutely have to buy Dell (because of the cost), then order from the business line, not the home line. I hope that whatever you get, it treats you well. :) This would be a longer post--and I'd reply to Krisanne too--but I'm at work, and I have piles of files on my desk that are screaming for attention. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 12. Addendum for Cora: Get XP Professional for now. Vista will remain utterly useless until at least the release of SP1. Note to Krisanne: I haven't been lurking much, actually. The truth is that I check (with heart in throat every time) the incident reports and the memorial forum, but not much else. The six months or so before July were trial by fire, and it's nothing short of a miracle that I'm still here (exacerbation of existing thyroid disorder), so my perspective on some things has changed drastically (and on others, not at bit). All in all, I'm a lot happier when I'm trying to be helpful than when I'm just bullshitting around. (Not that there's anything wrong with the latter, but the former is better for me.) Besides which, I have somehow become responsible for the network (such as it is) at work, so the subject matter is at the top of my mind. Also, I just had to have the fan replaced in this piece of shit darling little Dell laptop (it shattered in the casing, probably from the excessive heat generated by the poor design), so Dell is also at the forefront of my thinking. How're you?
  13. Have you checked with local systems builders? It's a little more expensive--maybe--but in the long run, you will be a much more satisfied customer. I will never, ever again order pre-built, and if I'm forced to (kicking and screaming), it sure as shit won't be from Dell. Also, when you buy antivirus, avoid Symantec and McAfee like the plague. I recommend Outpost (firewall) and Nod32 (antivirus), but if you think you'll be happier with a suite (all-in-one protection), the top of the line is Kaspersky. 14. "Obviously moderators would know..." Moderators are people, and I only know of one moderator here (possibly two) that I would trust, come hell or high water, to keep his mouth firmly closed about the private information to which he is privy. In other words, I, for one, would not consider such a method if I wanted to make a truly anonymous query. Then again, unless someone uses a proxy server when creating a new identity, there's a pretty good chance that his or her IP will identify that person to the administrator anyway. One of the issues that has been raised by the thoughtful (elsewhere, but not lately) is the lack of privacy on web-based forums. That's another way of saying that regardless of how much you trust the administrators of such forums, they do, at least in theory, have access to your email and your personal messages. That's not to say that I believe Sangiro is spending his days snooping around his own server, because I don't believe that at all, but that doesn't change the fact that in this medium, the only privacy you have is the privacy the administrator allows you to have. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 15. Keep it in a box, in the dark, in a quiet place until you can find a vet or rehabilitator who will take custody. You may be able to find a rehabber by googling in your area, but a vet--particularly one who handles exotic pets--will know. Or you can call whatever governmental entity deals with migratory birds/non-game wildlife in Canada. In the US, it's US Fish and Wildlife Service or individual states' non-game divisions, and there will be a similar entity in your country. They license the rehabilitators, and they should be able to tell you who works in your area. It's almost impossible to diagnose your bird from a distance. (It looks sparrowish, btw, but I can't really tell with the face and beak turned away.) With young birds, it's relatively easy: feed them the proper food mixture, and they either live or die in the same relative proportions as in nature--i.e., they have about a 25% survival rate. Adult birds are much harder, because it could be poison, it could be impact, it could be disease or parasites, or something else altogether, and only a professional can say for sure. Adults are easily stressed, and that will sometimes kill them faster than the underlying problem. If you do decide to try to treat this bird yourself, never give fluids from an eyedropper. Rescued birds that might have lived often die from induced pneumonia because well-meaning people insist on giving them water or milk from an eyedropper, and it goes straight into their lungs. 22. hell, I'll say it. His salsa was never that great. He seemed obsessed with it though. I always thought he was a little weird... IAWTP. I had exactly one encounter with him, which ended up in email. I got the feeling even he knew there was something wrong with him. As for the noises that sound like apportioning some of the blame to the victim...when someone escalates a situation, that person is to blame. If Randy were the most volatile person in the world, it wouldn't matter. He didn't touch anyone, much less pull a knife and stab someone. Anyone who says differently needs to sit back and take some quiet time to reflect on what you're really saying. I guess I just find it hard to believe that some people are asking for "the other side of the story." Often enough, there isn't one. This is one of those times. 23. I hope I'm not too late, because I see this was posted some time ago. First of all, after you press F8 at bootup, choose "last known good configuration." If that works, the next thing you need to do is right click on "My Computer," choose "Properties," go to the "Advanced" tab, and choose "Settings" under "Startup and Recovery." Untick the box that says "Automatically restart." That way, you'll be able to see the STOP code, and it will give you a better idea what's going on the next time something goes wrong. If you're running antivirus software and you use an antispyware utility, it's probably not malware. Let me know what happens (email, if you like). I wouldn't do a repair install right off the bat.
