  2. I feel compelled to help. After lunch... plan dinner. I'm surrounded. All y'all are bad. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

  4. that would be lunch. And what about after lunch, Steven? What should I do then? I can just imagine what my days would be like if I let you plan them. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  5. Did you try clicking the link for "Locate Me" yet? It works. It made me feel a little weird. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  6. Well... I thought the "random girl" discussion was weird. But I thought the whole interview was choppy, so I made the assumption that some important stuff was left out. Maybe, maybe not. Most people don't survive what happened to her, so there's a very real possibility that she's cracked. But I've been quoted before, and I don't recall much resemblance between what I said and what the reporter said I said, so I'm inclined to give her the benefit of the doubt. LOL. That's a very old smile--taken the same day as the "real serious" picture, less than five minutes apart. But I am smiling. I am almost totally de-stressed and re-rested, and all I have to figure out is...the next thing. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  7. That, at least, I can answer, and the answer is: No, it doesn't matter. More than likely, if the hospital is using the American Red Cross, the credits can be passed along no matter where we live, but with regional blood collection centers, I don't know what the rules are. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 9. That's my question too, Ray. I'll be thinking of you both. Let me know if there's anything else I can do. Hugs, rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  10. QuoteJust as a jumper gets to decide his own level of risk, so does the DZO. He's the one who will suffer economic loss (or not) as the result of his decision. It doesn't matter what a DZO decides to ban at his dropzone--it's his dropzone. Go elsewhere if you don't like it. Just for the record, in my opinion, hook turns (bad landings by people who bit off more than they could chew) are not high performance landings. I'm all for banning hook turns, but the enforcement is usually self-imposed--often permanently. Banning high performance landings by those who are qualified to make them, however, is overkill, IMO, but it's still the DZOs decision. I used my CYPRES for some jumps and turned it off for others. I would not like jumping at a dropzone that requires an AAD, and I never jumped at one that did. OTOH, I wonder how many of the people posting here have had the "opportunity" to spend a lot of time around their DZO in the aftermath of a fatality. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 11. I just saw him a few months ago. He was over a few times to visit; I wouldn't let him take the scooter to the liquor store because I was afraid he'd crash and burn.
  12. If the people you "pushed" don't have an issue, then no one else has any business making it an issue. I can't figure why everyone doesn't understand that. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  13. Why don't you talk to one of these DZOs about the fatality that caused them to decide to make AADs mandatory? Not all of them do, for a wide variety of reasons. But if you talk to a DZO who has lived through a fatality that an AAD would have prevented, you might see it differently. I do think jumpers have a right to decide for themselves. But I also think that DZOs have the same right. I don't see any way to make an argument for the former that is more compelling than the argument for the latter. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 14. I think this guy has other issues. What do the two unrelated articles on his site have to do with his problem, and why did he feel the need to post them? This link: http://www.mothering.com/articles/new_baby/sleep/fowler.html talks about sex and the family bed. Most couples seem to manage to have a sex life in spite of the family bed, so that can't be the issue. Beck's dad and I split up before she was born, and I don't remember how long Beck slept with me. I started out putting her in the crib, but I was a nursing mother, and most mornings when I woke up, she was still in the bed with me, so I gave up the crib except for naps. I don't recall the "transition" being anything but a natural progression, and I'm pretty sure that's how it's supposed to be. In my parents house, there was no family bed. My father can't sleep with another person in the room, so he and my mother had separate bedrooms. But having walked in on them when I was five, I can assure you all that it had no ill effect on their love life. I guess what I'm trying to say is that sleeping arrangements don't have much to do with an active and healthy sex life. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 15. Maybe it has something to do with that aneurysm she suffered in 2001. Or maybe not. She's supposed to be quite a brilliant woman, and the in-depth interview I read several years ago seemed to validate that. All I'm going to say about the point she made is that for a young woman is in the kind of situation she's referring to--and unless you've been there, you really have no idea how it is--a blow job is probably the lesser evil when the potential consequences are weighed. rl P.S. 16. Don't make me pull out the tractor! I miss the tractor. I also edited my post. I have a love/hate relationship with this argument. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy, but in the end, it's just kind of stupid, IMO, for the reasons I cited above. Now, can we get back to the tractor? rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  17. Well, it has taken some time, but now I feel right at home here. Edited to add: Some people have opinions and no authority. Fuck 'em. It's just a lot of words. On the other hand, if a DZO decides that his dropzone is going to require AADs, it's his decision. Alone. Unfortunately, having been around for the earliest version of this argument, I can well see why DZOs have become defensive about making this decision, because the rain of shit that falls on them is well nigh a CAT 5 storm. If you don't want to wear an AAD, don't. If your home dz decides it's going to convert, move. It's that easy. rl P.S. I took your name out of the subject line, Dave, because it's not directed at you. 20. Here's a topical article from today's Christian Science Monitor: http://www.csmonitor.com/2006/0329/p01s03-woam.html South of the border, fence is no deterrent Would-be migrants say nothing will stop them from working in US. ALTAR, MEXICO – They stream in. Today, the same as yesterday. The same as the day before. Backpacks are stuffed with bottled water, soap, chips, maybe an icon of the Virgin of Guadalupe. They wear sweaters and wool hats for the cold desert nights. It often starts here, in Altar, 60 miles south of the Arizona border, at one of the largest staging points for would-be migrants attempting to cross into the US illegally. The travelers arrive from all over Mexico, Central America, even as far away as Colombia, and Brazil. They are going to "El Norte." They tell you that, straight out. And if they don't cross this time, they will simply try again. While debate in the US continues over immigration reform policy, here, on the south side of the border, there seems to be consensus that enforcement measures will deter almost no one. "Walls and lights and sensors and police fill our heads," says Dagoberto Martinez, "...but they don't make us turn back." (continued...) 21. I've gotten to that point more than a few times. I don't think most women start out bitching and screaming (there are exceptions), but I think that in dealing with certain kinds of people, it just evolves. The next step is giving up. We had a 75 year old woman come in with her 80 year old husband, ostensibly for estate planning. As it turned out, she wanted a divorce. Given what I heard that day--with both of them in the room--I'd have divorced him too...if I didn't kill him first. But at that point--although he talked about her rages (in the past tense), all she did was talk, quietly, in a shaking voice, with tears in her eyes. He acknowledged that it was about all she did anymore. Emotional abuse brings out the worst in women and men. Most men just get really passive-aggressive. Most women--when they're still trying to "fix it" will resort (as a last resort) to screaming, shouting, crying hysterically and possibly even throwing things. Usually it's because the man will do everything in his power to provoke such behavior so he can then turn it around and make the effect (the screaming) the cause of his own shitty, abusive behavior. My own stories in that regard, btw, revolve around a diagnosed narcissist and a crackhead, as well as the guy who married me when I was 22 because he saw it as a way to avoid losing his house. So yeah, Bobbi, there are better ways, but with some people, you can't get shit, no matter what you do. And if you're still wed to the idea that you can salvage the relationship, it can get pretty loud and ugly. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from.
