  1. True, also at altitude they are often frozen, ouch! I had a canopy collision about 10 years ago. I thought I cleared the air, my friend spiraled down behind and below me. I spiraled checking out a new canopy. Stopped and looked ahead just in time to see my friends end cell that my head went thru. Ripped it from leading to trailing edge snapping the 4 outer lines. We must have had a closing speed of at least 70 mph. I then flew next to him and said you should probably land it, as we were now under 1500'. And it seemed to be flying almost normal. He and I landed safely. The only thing I had was a sore neck and a repair bill. He was nice said shit happens and split the repair with me. Live and learn, I could have be more vigilant.
  2. Not true. The air we push in front of us would reverse the teardrop. Don't believe me. Watch Masters of the Sky. Carl Boenish catches on film 2 guys freefalling thru an open flat circular canopy. You can see the nylon being pushed away from them before they actually come in contact with it. They all lived, lucky they missed the person. Snapped I think 15 suspention lines 550 cord. Got pretty messed up.
  3. Bandit, I was surprised cause my friend OWEN QUINN jumped it in 75. Yet I was a media frenzy. Made a clean getaway. Big party at my house that night. Next day NY Daily news front page headline. Chutes from twin towers disapears who is the mystery guy. What a ride. 3 Days later admitted to it sold pics on news. Cool miner side, landed next to car got in taking off rig stuffing in trash bag while my friend drove got caught at light. Guy in car next to me is yelling at me, I'm like what? He says where'd you jump from I realize he is no threat. I say the WTC, he says Great I was in army airborne in WW2, that was Great!
  4. I guess I should have added F111 and 5 cell for the newbies. cause 186' isn't that small these days
  5. AAAAWWWW Safety-Star! My first square reserve. Did a familiarization jump on it. Then used it jumping off the World Trade Center 9/13/80. Did a stand up landing. Not bad for 186 sq ft and 230lbs.
  6. I think the saftey flyer was smaller but Im not sure. The safety star was 186 sq ft 5 cell I was 230 and could do a stand up. As I did off the world trade center 9/13/1980.
  7. CH-53 only thing I miss about the Marines is the fact that every other weekend at camp lejeune we had a chopper for our skydiving club. just chipped in for a couple of cases of beer for the pilots. they needed the time anyway.
  8. the lower you pull, the less time spend looking for your main after the cutaway
  9. Sometimes when i'm adjusting the harness of a big booby lady, and it's obvious that they are in the way. I jokingly ask "You can't deflate those things can you?' Usually gets a laugh.
  10. lakewood, 1973, 6. 3 out of the DC-3 then first freefall out of the DC-3
  11. congrats, made my first one Aug 17 1973 when I was 16. Hope I will be jumping for a long time. All the best.
  12. I 'm sure I posted this before, I'll but do it again. at the ranch NY about 8 yrs ago a nice lady. At sunset close to the mountain, october peak leaf season PERFECT. My lady says I have to sing. I think OMG here comes the shower scene. Well the first movie I think I ever saw at the movies was. The sound of music. Loved it. Anyway she started singing the opening song When the hills are alive.... She was a professional opera singer and I actually got teared up, one of my most memorable jumps
  13. Not a guy gal thing and maybe off topic, but it seems like the corporate world and maybe everyone has gone completely CYA. 7 yrs ago I briefly worked as a car salesman at a Caddy dealer in Union City NJ. I was sitting at my desk at the front of the showroom, only about 20' from the main street. I heard a screetch, turned in time to see a guy get hit by a car, went up and over it. I went out and knelt beside him and put my hands on his chest and forehead to keep him still. He was bleeding from his ears and trying to get up. I told him to try and lie still that help is on the way and that by moving he might hurt himself further. I was able to keep him fairly calm till help arrived. I then went back into the dealer to clean up as I had some blood on me. The owner looked at me and said "Why would you ever get involved like that?" I gave my two weeks notice and was fired on the spot. Last I heard they went out of business. Karma.

  18. ok I thought we were talking about going faster than the wind. I didn't realize we were only talking about going directly downwind.
  19. Hey, READ the link I posted before you sound like an idiot. I'll post it again. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_boat An ice boat can reach speeds of up to 10 times the wind speed. i.e in a 10mph wind some ice boats can reach 100mph. READ.
  20. ok I looked it up. up to 10xs the wind speed http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_boat
  21. try plentyoffish website, for real,
  22. Why? Then we would have to feed and guard him!!!
  23. Yes, Ice boats, would have to look up, but I think they can go up to 4 times the actual wind speed due to the lift generated by the sail.
