  1. I understand it would get old, but if you are middle eastern looking and are in an airport, expect to be profiled, if you are dark skinned driving in wealthy neighborhood expect to be profiled. Me as a 37 year old white male, if I'm walking around a school or an office building wearing a black trench coat, hat, and sunglasses i should expect to be profiled. You know who you are, what you look like, and where you are. Just because you have a reason and the right to be somewhere doing whatever you are doing, doesn't mean other people don't have the right to worry about there safety.
  2. Sorry, yes that is what I meant! @ keithbar, I started using a removable slider for the same reason. I also was not on a small cross-braced canopy at the time, I think it was a "radical" 135. I was just never comfortable trying to put the slider behind my head/neck. (I think it has to do with not having a neck) :) They can be a pain to reattach, especially at first, but once you get used to it, it's not so bad. Having the slider gone makes flying (for me anyway) camera lots better and opens up field of vision, not to mention letting the risers spread farther apart for better flight characteristics.
  3. Luckily, the few "emergencies" I've had have been at higher altitudes. That being said, the lowest I have intentionally gotten out was between 2000/2200 ft usually on larger canopies for demo's or demo practice, but have done a few that low on my velo. I think the proper term for those are PoP and hops
  4. So if they've got a good reason, let them tell you that. Why wouldn't they? They most likely will, after you let them know who you are. They like to keep things on a need to know basis for the simple fact, if they tell you "x" just happened at this location, then there is a good chance you are going to say you where somewhere else. If you are the one they are looking for or look like the one they are looking for then they have every right to question you. If you say you were in the area when "x" happened then they can question you about what you saw. If you don't match the description of the person they are looking for and say you were at different location when "x" happened then they know that you are of no use to them and can let you go. BUT they can't know what you know or who you are until they question you. So to make your life easy and not get shot, just answer the questions you are asked and don't be an ass.
  5. It's not really a matter of removing the lanyard, it's more of just not connecting it. (At least with the ones I've had) For the rings, yes you want them below slinks on the risers. I don't think it really matters if they are placed there before or after you remove the slider. I personally usually pull them down before removal. I think it is pretty common to use a removable slider for terminal jumps. As far as I know there shouldn't be any problems. At least I haven't had any.
  6. I think surrender is the wrong word, I think comply would be a more fitting word. And yes, I think you should comply with the police! Yes you have the right to not tell them who you are or give them your ID without cause, but why would you not? Unless you have something to hide, and if they think you have something to hide then they are going to want to find out who you are all the more. So, being a law abiding citizen, if some cop randomly stops and asks me who I am, what I'm doing, and for my ID. Give them your explanation and ID and then be on your way..... Or when they ask, you could be an ass and say I know my rights, I don't have to tell or give you anything. Best case if you do this, you spend half an hour arguing with them, worst case you end up in jail over night or shot. And, you as a common citizen have no idea what is going on on the next block over, or what call this cop just got on the radio. Just because you are not doing anything wrong doesn't mean you don't match the description of someone who just did!!
  7. I've got an old(er)talon that was donated to me, that I use for demos. It has a ROL pouch and I get asked often by younger jumpers what it is. I've been jumping just under 10 years and knew what it was when I got it. I have thought about using it...but just cant make myself do it
  8. Here you go, under slider model click "custom" then you can put in the measurements you want. http://paraconcepts.com/Store/product_info.php?cPath=23&products_id=33 make sure the tabs for the lanyard are sewn on properly or remove the supplied tabs and install new ones. I lost a pilot chute and d-bag on my second (first terminal) full RDS jump. Other than that, no problems.
  9. Let me in on that jump too. It would be nice to be the "floatie" guy for once :)
  10. But....it's not American dining, it's TGIFridays UK
  11. I've found that a turkey fryer burner works pretty good for cooking with a wok
  12. Speaking of freezing and legality. I've seen many discussions going both ways about freeze distillation. Personally, I think that it should be legal. The most common drink for freeze distillation is "old school" apple jack. You do your fermentation, then put it in a bucket and and stick it in a deep freezer for a couple days (or in a barrel outside in areas with a cold enough climate). You then scoop out the ice, and repeat this two or three times. I'm sure you all know that alcohol doesn't freeze, so each time you remove the ice, you are removing only the water. So what is left is a nice strong liquor. You usually won't get anything as strong as a real liquor, usually something around a 40-60 proof
  13. I'm not going to argue with you about jump numbers or when you should or shouldn't start wearing a camera, I am however going to give you an example of why the rules are there. I recently had a very good friend die because of a camera! He was nowhere near to having 200 jumps, he was closer to 7000. He had a reserve entanglement with his camera. He WAS a full time video guy at a fairly busy dz. Do you think he never thought about, or practiced EP's for getting rid of his helmet. This man of thousands of video jumps who knew exactly what he was doing could not get rid of his helmet, which did have a cutaway system. So go right ahead jump your camera, shot your crappy video.
  14. Yes, but I keg. Gave all my bottles, caps and capper away a year or so ago. I've got a fat tire clone and a milk stout in kegs right now. Not sure what I'll to next
  15. You will save money if you can find a S/L coarse. i think i paid $1600-1700 for mine. I've seen AFF range anywhere from $2500 to $4000
  16. The methanol is one of the problems, but it is easy to avoid with proper temp control, or as you said if you just use sugar and skip the whole corn or grain process. The other place the going blind myth comes from is that in the bootlegger hay-day the moonshiners would use just about any copper coil they could get their hands on. So radiators and such were common, which are soldered with lead. Another reason was that people would use all sorts of nasties to stretch a batch. Wasn't uncommon to have turpentine mixed in
  17. 100 gallons of beer or wine is the legal limit. I'm not sure if it 100 of each or 100 combined. I don't usually get anywhere close, so I don't worry to much about it. Home distilling isn't exactly forbidden :) you just have to have a license. Anybody can get one if you are willing to pay for it! The smallest license in SC is $5,200 for a micro distillery, this allows you to produce 125,000 cases. Assuming a case is 12 bottles and each bottle is 750 ML, that is 1,125,000 liters of alcohol. I think if you are making ethanol for fuel, you can get a cheaper license.
  18. Not directed at wolfriveroe; I'm sure I'm gonna get flamed for this but oh well...... I agree with cvfd1399. I'm not saying the cop was right, quite the opposite. The cop was in the wrong, and should probably loose his job, but I don't think he should face criminal charges. Yes, the cop told the guy to get his ID, but wasn't expecting him to turn and "dive head first" into his car. The guy should have known to let the cop know that he had to go back in the car to retrieve his ID. Keeping your hands visible, moving slowly and letting the officer know if you have to go into the glove box should be common sense these days.
  19. I made a few awhile back and used a ping pong ball on the inside. I would paint the ball the same color(or close to) the color of the cord I was using so you wouldn't see the white ping pong ball. The solution I came up with for the finishing knot, was to start with and end with a long tail. Then use the tail to connect to the kill line.
  20. I pulled up Fort Campbell on Google Earth and found two air fields near it. One on the North end and one on the south-east end. I am not sure if either of these are where the old DZ used to be, but I saw no sign of a pea pit at either. Having said that, I looked up two DZs that I am very familiar with to use as a reference and found the pea pits very quickly and easily.
  21. It could be the catalytic converter(s) as well. When they start to get clogged or the refractory starts to break up, the computer can give some pretty weird reading. This recently happened with my work truck. The fuel mileage dropped dramatically and it lost all power. It was giving bad O2 censer, bad cylinder, faulty injector along with other readings. Changed both converters (refractory was broken), and it's like a new truck.
  22. I recently got a MC-4 that I am going to convert to a BOC. I have a 40" PC laying around. Am thinking about making it collapsible and attaching it to the 370 in the MC-4.
  23. Not that it's going to help you, but USC (university of South Carolina) has a skydiving club, the flying gamecocks :)
