  1. I have one, granted I am not nearly that big (5'11" 235), and I have LOTS of room left over! I think it should fit no problem. I am curious as to what container was used to get him thru student status? And also what canopies he will be using?
  2. I agree with Peek, at a min. I would have you sit thru a FJC and do the first jump just as if it were your first. Then we would have to see where to go from there. I started at a Static line drop zone, and they/we would do modified courses for people pretty often if they had been out of the sport for awhile or if they were military free fall personal. It is all a matter of finding a DZ that will work with you and what you actually remember, not just what you think you remember. You may sit thru the FJC and be like....oh I forgot all about this, and this, oh and that too. All that said, I wouldn't think you need to go the the entire AFF again.
  3. I've got a '70 MGB that I had electrical trouble with in the mid 90s, it has since been rewired and changed over to a 12 volt system, or it at least has a 12 volt battery instead of two 6 volts. Got rid of the generator and regulator and it now has an alternator.
  4. Yes the cutaway was necessary. Not sure what the mal was, something that had the main spinning.
  5. My first thought when reading this was that the fabric may have fused together. Would there be any issues with it being packed for 16 years?
  6. We did the same thing at the DZ where I started. Only one S/L student in the air at a time. We had on particular guy that usually worked the radio. We always gave him a hard time because every jumper was always jumper #1. It didn't matter if they were first or third out, it was always jumper #1 LOL. Guess it really doesn't matter when there is only one in the air at a time :) I once watched him talk a first jump student who had cutaway and then somehow turn into the main. The main got caught on a reserve toggle and induced a turn/spiral. He talked the guy in beautifully!! Using the spiral and timed opposite turns to guide him to the landing area and to a decent landing.
  7. Even better, get green beans and roast them yourself! It's super easy. All you need is an air popcorn popper and about 10 min
  8. I didn't say it is something I would plan on doing (I advise staying out the corner ;) ) I was just giving an explanation to what I thought Kurbie meant when he said to "learn to carve hard before you dig"
  9. I think the thought process here is that by carving, you get out to the side of the canopy vs being under it. If you are deep in the corner digging out could slam you into the ground, where as a carve and dig will give you a couple extra feet. Think wingover. I will admit that I accidentally did this ONCE. This was several years and many jumps ago, shortly after i started jumping a x braced canopy. Got target fixation and was trying to make the gates. when I realized I was low and thought I was going to hit the ground, I brought my right leg up to brace for impact and flared. The next thing I know I'm sliding the whole right side of my body across the ground and looking "up" at my canopy which is also on the ground (still flying mind you). Stood it up and walked away with nothing more than a good scare and grass burn on my pants. I think the carve is what actually saved my femurs, that and the fact that I kept flying the wing.
  10. Gas is about $1.60 a gal and diesel is about $1.90 a gal here in South Carolina.
  11. He is forgetting the key part of "all objects fall at the same speed" the key he is forgetting is "in a vacuum" Remind him of this and it should make sense to him. Here is a good video that should help
  12. I started at a small 182 DZ as well. You are correct in that the progress can be slow. That being said, I think that the actual first jump coarse and up to licensing can be better at a small DZ. At a small DZ you will most likely get more one on one time and not be treated like a number. So I say do your training at the small DZ. Once you get licensed and have few jumps under your belt, then go to the big DZ and get some experience and some "high end" coaching. Another benefit of doing your initial training at the small local DZ, is that you will then know the locals, where you will most likely come back to a do a lot of your jumping.
  13. I always make my own, and have never made one with a large enough loop for the entire pin to fit thru.
  14. Yep, looks like outside video to me or an outside still, but probably a screen grab. It looks to me like the videographer is spinning the tandem pair, hence the "lean to one side"
  15. Like all the others have said...not hilarious or great! And I promise, your friend is not the first to think about or to do it. He's just another asshat that thinks he can do whatever he wants and didn't think about possible consequences.
  16. Sorry, I forgot to turn on my sarcasm font
  17. I agree! Let everyone know who they are! Also, I have never understood why they wear the hoods. If you truly believe in something and want to stand up for it, why hide who you are, be proud of what you believe in....Even if it is ridiculous.
  18. whether his news source is interesting or not, it is a fact that the students did hold a rally supporting Ben Fields. I live 30 min from this school. It was featured on the local news. As a side note that I'm sure will make all the cop bashers happy. Ben Fields has been fired, the administrator that called the resource officer in is "on leave" and the two girls are back in class as if nothing has happened. It is under investigation as to whether or not they disrupted the class. No word on any suspension or expulsion.
  19. As amazon has pointed out, one student called the officer in question "officer slam" so she has taken to calling him that as well. I would like to point out something very interesting that happened today. Today at Spring Valley High School, the students (not sure exactly how many, but the news said well over 100), held a rally to support Ben Fields. They walked out at 10:00 and had a peaceful rally. Multiple races, including blacks were involved in the rally. It lasted about 10 min, it ended when the principle came out announced that their voices had been heard and he asked them to return to class, which everyone did... Peacefully It seems very odd to me, if this officer was such a horrible person and had a reputation as "officer slam" that the students of the school would rally behind him! The students know the truth, they know what happened and that he did what needed to be done.
  20. It's OK, they won't have to worry about hitting cops in the near future.... because there won't be any. It has gotten to the point that the cops can't do their jobs without getting fired. So why in the fucked would anybody want to become a cop.
  21. I worked at SDMB for awhile, I left for personal reasons. When I did work there, I will say that when the airport was owned by ramp 66 there were very few if any problems. When the county took over, that is when suddenly there started all of these safety issues. When the airport I formed the DZ that they couldn't cross the taxiway without contacting the tower. The DZ got a radio and started Co tactics g the tower for every vehicle or person that crossed it. When a new person came to jump, they were I formed to not step foot on asphalt. They have a truck with a trailer that has benches that they fairy people with. It basically comes down to, the county doesn't want the DZ there, so they are going to make them leave one way or the other! On the other hand the DZO is a bit..... abrasive, and I don't think he has done anything to help himself. If he wasn't so obnoxious and could talk to people like a civilized person he might not be having these issues. They have also alienated themselves by talking crap (publicly) about all the other DZ's in the area. So they aren't getting much if any help from local jumpers.
  22. He actually grabbed her pant leg, he didn't touch the desk. His other arm was wrapped around her head. (It was no where near to being a choke hold as some have said). So when the desk did flip backwards, her head was cradled in his arm. Her head didn't hit the floor.
  23. So you are saying I am unintelligent, because I chose to spank my child when she was young. I find that very interesting. I think it's actually the opposite! I have seen the way children that have been brought up with half threats and "time outs" act. I refuse to have a child that acts that way. My daughter has NEVER thrown a temper tantrum or had a "melt down" in a store or anywhere for that matter. I also know how to tell my child "NO", which I'm sure you think is evil. She doesn't get everything she asks for. I have taught her to save money and to buy things that are important to her, not just the things she wants. She does very well in school, all AP classes with all A's and B's and if she stays on the coarse she is on, she will have finished all of her high school classes by the middle of 11th grade. I say all this to make a point! I actually have a pretty high IQ and am fairly intelligent, I have raised a well behaved child that is also intelligent. So I take offense with your saying that there are intelligent ways to raise a child, and that i should go look them up. I know your "intelligent ways to raise a child" and for the most part I don't believe they work as well as a good old fashioned spanking.
  24. I assume this is ok with everyone though, https://youtu.be/oRrU0R6pew0
