  1. I am making a removable slider, and want to do a pull test on the rings before i hook it up. I was wondering if anyone knows how much force is put on the grommets on opening. In other words, if I put the slider all together and hang one corner from a hook how much weight should I be able to put on the oppisite side? Or is this even neccesary?
  2. I guess the flaw in my reasoning is that at my home dz and another that is very close by that I jump at, shut the tandems down around 20 mph. I would never ignore 30 mph winds, and in a month when I start doing tandems, won't jump in them. When I took Scoot Miller's canopy coarse he specifically said to ignore the wind and to fly your canopy to the ground, that you dont change anything about the way you land. I believe it was in the part where he is comparing the wind to a river, and you also ignore(or not pay attention rather) your ground speed, because it scares most people and causes them to flare high. You do have to take wl and canopy type in to account as well, and I do fly at a moderatly high wl on an elliptical canopy so it is easier to fly through strong winds. I also take my duties as an instructor very seriously, and would not put a student out in winds over 14 mph. I also try to teach my fellow jumpers once they are no longer students how to land properly with or without wind, downwind and crosswind. I know alot of people never plan on landing down or crosswind, but if it happens, that is when they get hurt because they never learned how
  3. my personal approach to wind is to ignore it! Don't think about the wind, fly and land the canopy. If the tandems are flying then go with it. It's good to know how to land in all wind types, what are you gonna do if the plane takes off in calm 5mph winds and on the ride up is starts gusting to 20? I like to "feel" what the canopy is doing and try not to think about wind. Take a canopy class and they will most likely teach you the same thing
  4. I know everyone is gonna yell at me for saying this but, I say take the rig. Drop it off as soon as you get there, have it repacked talk to the DZO and do a coaching jump. From looking at your profile you aren't gonna be able to do a tandem or rent a rig. I jumped there about 2.5 years ago and had no problems what so ever. I had been in the sport about 4 months and hade maybe 50 jumps. If you take your rig, at least you might be able to jump, if not, whats the big deal you carried an extra bag.
  5. I have a radical 135 (wl 1.8) it has fairly light front riser pressure, and I love the way it flies. It gets pretty good swoops, however the recovery arc is a little shorter than the katana. 180 deg approach on Kat is about 600 ft and is about 400 on the radical. I am looking into getting the H-mod for it if anyone knows where I can get that.
  6. I agree completly, the Look part is pretty much outdated as you really cant see the ripcord without de-arching. From my experiance alot of older instructors still say it, and I think it is more out of habit, as it is what they learned on gear when you could see the ripcord. We teach with S/L at our dropzone and we teach arch reach pull
  7. why was s student with 5-10 jumps off radio? I understand not talking them in if they have been landing well and want to do it them selves. However they whould still wear one just in case. And I personally love downwind landings with obsticales to carve around....lol
  8. I am noticing a trend in this thread. People are saying religion, but I think they mean the christian religion. Saying that if you don't believe then you will burn in hell is pretty much only part of christian dogma, and maybe muslium. I personally am pagon, so I believe there is something more than us out there, not an all knowing all powerful god though. I also believe very much in science and evolution.
  9. I beleive it's the same at the T-10
  10. sorry about that! It's a MC1-1B
  11. does anyone know where I can find instructions for packing a round parachute? MC1-1B
  12. Once the ring is off, what would be the diffrence between having the ring and using a ripid link in its place. Not trying to be a smart ass or anything. I like doing my own rigging and would like to know for future ref. BTW i'm flying a 135 elliptical so I dont think anyone will be putting a non collapsable pilot chute on in the future at least hope not
  13. I just got a canopy with the same setup. I simply took a pair of bolt cutters and cut the ring off. Then you can hook up your d-bag with a rapid link where the ring was. Nice and easy lol
  14. It varies from person to person. Once I got rid of my first canopy(pd 230-f111) that i couldn't land for s&%t and got some zero P it came pretty quick about 10 jumps, so about 60 in all. But I know people with a thousand or so that just can't seem to stand em up. Don't look down or straight out in front of you, more of an out and down and it will come with time.
  15. I've got an old vector rig that I cut the container off of that I'm gonna wear under my sport rig, and d-bag another main. I think that should make me all legal, and it has the housings and all for cutaway handle and the rings for the risers. You can chop the reserve on your regular rig, it just requires a hook knife lol
  16. Don't plan on altering my TSO'd rig. A Second harness is exactly what I had in mind. Do you know of anywhere that I can get that in writing. My DZO says that it will have to be a TSO's harness as well. I think I have a way around it either way. I've cut the container off an existing rig, so already have the cutway handles and rings to attach the risers
  17. I was wondering if you were planning to make a tertiary rig to be worn with an already tso'd sport rig. If the tertiary rig had to be tso'd as well, and are there any rules as far as the front canopy being in a container or can it just be D-bagged
