  1. I've had success using the poor-man's alternative: lots of female-female RCA adapters and lots of RCA cables. I find that the copy inhibit falls out well before any considerable visual data does. Another route is to connect your DV camera to your computer set up as a non-controllable device. Rather than recording the VHS footage to DV, just use the DV as a bridge and play the footage [VCR-RCA-DV-FW-NLE] without pressing record on the DV camera. Some cameras only check for copy protection once they've been told to record. The NLE will not receive this copy inhibit datum. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  2. I'm ingesting 4:4:4 12-bit 1.85 4K scaled from a 6K scan. Our initial online is massive, but since we're finishing at 2.35, we actually crop to ~2.15 right off the bat and throw out the data that we simply will not use [this is where that data figure came from... sure it's not half of 1.2gb/s but it's certainly close. We're not working with UHDV, but 4K@4096x2160 which is later cropped.]. The online data lives in scratch and we offline to 4:2:2 720.24p choked through an ugly 8-bit full dynamic range LUT for editing. Pass the EDL back through scratch, finalize our timing/curves and set up for one of three finishing options: 12-bit 4K for lasering to a print stock, 10-bit 4K for projection [have you been to any screenings with Sony's 4K projector, by the way? It's gorgeous] or 10-bit 2K for projection [this is most common]. I'd love to hear about the work you're doing right now, PM me! You'll flip when you hear about this workflow I've been trying to leverage for an upcoming feature... And as for 4K in freefall... I don't expect this to happen until the guys at RED finish their first prototype this month. I believe that Jim Jannard knew Norman "back in the day" and may bring him on to do some tests. I am indescribably jealous. The only other way I could see it happening right now would be using something like Arri's flash mag for the D-20 and flying it like an imax camera. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  3. What the hell flavor are you using? I get uncompressed 12-bit RAW 4K out of our arriscan at about half that data rate... I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  4. I'm sure this is regarding microline... No. Dacron holds trim MUCH better then Microlione. Egh, sorry, I mis-quoted there. I know that dacron holds trim better than microline - my fault. My question was regarding the trim characteristics of vectran as they compare to microline and dacron... I've been told that vectran is better at maintaining trim. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  5. Yeah, sure we have it all the time too. How about those guy relaxing or sleeping on ridding to altitude? [shrug] I hold the same opinion. It only has to happen once. If people are comfortable with it, I don't have a problem with it unless it effects my safety. I may be crazy, but it doesn't hurt to stay on my toes. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  6. I'm sure this is regarding microline... but does it extend to vectran? I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  7. I respectfully disagree with your instructor. I'd hate to be distracted by music when "EXIT EXIT EXIT!" comes from the cockpit. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  8. I made a vector of the shoreline a while ago, here's one of its applications. That shape can carry some notable meaning in the right context. I really don't know what I'm talking about.

    Vented Canopies?

Of course not! It's why I asked. Thanks for clarifying. I really don't know what I'm talking about.

    Vented Canopies?

Now Tom, do you see any reason not to "buy once" and stick with a particular canopy? Getting valves on one's first canopy may cost a little more initially, but it'll still be cheaper than a new canopy when the jumper moves to lower or underhung objects. Am I missing something essential? Some reason that something like a BlackJack may not be appropriate for most objects at all delays? I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  11. Reading student stories and watching student videos on skydivingmovies.com were fantastic when I was a student. Hearing somebody else's story and seeing somebody else with my abilities do their thing was great. Am I likely to watch an AFF video or read every student story here now? Not really. But there are a lot of students who will. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  12. 1: Firewire cable, 6-to-4 pin. 2: Plug it in, turn it on [in VTR mode], fire up iMovie 3: Computer-wise, nothing. I'll leave camera to those with experience. 4: Depends on how you fly, I'll leave that to those with experience. As for the black pixelated screens you're referring to... I'd need to see it to make any real guesses. I don't use iMovie that much so nothing comes to mind immediately. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  13. He's referring to a pull-out deployment system, not throw-out. I really don't know what I'm talking about.

    G3-suit. VKB

News video. I'll be pulling my website soon, VKB is putting up their own. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  15. I think everything about that picture screams 'Magot' I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  16. It's how I was taught at Perris by several different instructors. The only way I found out that it was "wrong" was reading these forums, reading Bill's article and listening to his interview Skydive Radio. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  17. Shit, I just hate that malfunction. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  18. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  19. If you're referring to that stomach-in-your-throat falling sensation, you never get that feeling out of an aircraft... not even in the first few seconds. The reason is that you're already traveling some ~100mph, so the air outside the plane is far from still. You exit and immediately enter this thick, turbulent soupy air. Over the next ~10 seconds, the "relative wind" changes from coming from the front of the plane to coming from the ground. That is, you stop traveling in the same direction of the plane and only travel down. One can get that "sinking" feeling if they exit from a still [or low-speed] aircraft like a helicopter or balloon, but it only lasts as long as it takes for the jumper to reach terminal velocity. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  20. Heh, that's awesome. No TUG speech for him. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  21. My guess is that they'll mention that others have done it before, but it "almost always ends in disaster." Cut to a few clips of people breaking themselves and the proper level of 'xtreme' will be accomplished. I'm just hoping we get to see Eli ask how swooping works. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  22. The search will yield you a lot of answers. From an initial standpoint, you have about 100 jumps to go before you want to consider putting a camera on your head... at least as far as the USPA and most reputable camera flyers are concerned. I take their advice. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  23. Bill Booth has already addressed this, it was a major part of testing. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
  24. Here are a few quotes from Bill Booth on the issue: As for downsides to the Skyhook? The usual camera/RSL entanglement issues remain. Is it reason enough to not get a Skyhook or RSL? Talk to people that know. I suppose that there is a bigger risk of somebody improperly rigging your reserve with a Skyhook but that is what it is. Anybody can improperly rig anything, reserves don't always work, etc. I would hope a rigger is just as attentive packing a Skyhook equipped rig vs. a non-Skyhook equipped rig. If shit happens, aim for their car. I really don't know what I'm talking about.
