  1. I agree, pretty serious statement made there. Maybe the rigger was slammed and fogot to fill out the packing card (not an excuse, it just might be a reality) I think the AFF-I's will now be checking the packing cards. Also, lets say this did not work out as well as it did and the out of date reserve was discovered during an incident investigation. Who holds the primary responsibility? The DZO, DZM, Rigger, or AFF-I's Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked
  2. I did a tandem 1st at one DZ then went through TAFF at another. I thought "my" TAFF was 1st rate! But I also went through a private program. I had the same instructor through out my progression which I found very beneficial. The most notable positives I had with the tandems were: I learned the raw basics of canopy flight with an expert literally on my ass. I learned to fly a landing pattern (when I made my 1st AFF the radio was silent except for the flare portion. The instructor has explained to me numerous benefits he gets from doing the tadems, maybe he will chime in here. Cheers, Phil Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked
  3. Cause i am at my Son's soccer tournament, but i will be jumping tomorrow at this time. Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked
  4. Observations: Explain the opening: A the student did not pull thus the AFF-I assisted him. The cameraman turned away, thus I did not see the students opening. Explain the opening: Camera person had a nice long snivel with the slider doing it's job, the manufacturer should be proud. Secondary observation: Cameraman needs to check his/her shit! Red cable to close to the box looks like shit in frame Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked
  5. I would if I could, but our vacation calendar is full already for that time frame and I have camera flying obligations for Sat. 25th. We'll catch you all next year
  6. Well I was coming, several of us were under the impression this was Aug 31 through Sept. 1. I just cancelled my airfare Really bummed to miss this, but I will see you all next year. Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked
  7. What an accomplishment!! I was in the loading area at the time the record jump was made. The jump was visible from the ground very early and was quite a sight to see!! Congrats to the organizers, Rook and SDC for putting on the event!!
  8. So if you buy a gift certificate from Macy's and 2 years later go to use it but find the Macy's has moved out and a Sears has opened in the same building, should they honor the certificate? Hmmm I was understanding when you buy a business you also buy ALL of it's liabilities as well as assets. Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked
  9. Also don't ge me wrong i don't blame the packer, sometimes these things just happen. Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked
  10. Don't film your openings. Keeep your cameras pointed at the horizon until your canopy is out of the bag, and the slider has caught some air and started working. When you look up, and get slammed, your camera helmet is behind your center of gravity, and will pull your neck backwards, which is never good. By keeping your eyes on the horizon, your helmet stays centered over your body, and will push straight down on your neck (still not great, but better than wrenching it forwards or back). The real lesson is, don't use packers. Today it was just a hard opening, tomorrow is could be a mal, and with a full video and stills set up, that could be the end of you. Pack your stuff. Nobody will be as careful as you will. Sorry was a little pain killered up when I wrote this last night. I was looking at the forward as I deployed (I dont look up). What I was trying to say that the opening was so hard my HC5 shut down for about 1 1/2 seconds and I was hoping the still camera captured what the video had missed. I normally only use specific packers, but this was one of those situations where I was not supposed to be flying camera, but they came up short staffed and needed me to "just do one jump". The call was fairly short and I had to set my cameras up after using them on a non-skydiving trip, so I used a packer Needless to say I am at home from work today with one extremely sore & stiff neck and left shoulder. 11. Well you guessed it!! Today I had one hell of a slammer!! (I paid for the pack job not the opening) I fimed a non-eventful AFF Cat.-A, when the reserve side tracked I de-arched hard on the wings (I am robust, I do this to slow when I have my camera helmet on) reached and pulled. Next thing I knew I had shooting pain in my neck, as well as both arms and hands. It took me a bit to gather myself, but I had a landable canopy and landed safely. After my friends helped me inspect my canopy I looked at the video; the opening was so hard my HC5 lost about 1.5 sec of footage. I checked the stills to see if there was 3 frames per sec footage that might show the opening sequence as I obviously was smacking the bite switch! but my stiill camera would not read the files!! Fortunately I ws able to pull the stills via a chip reader and my D70 appears to be working. Has anyone else had these issues? YES THE OPENING HURT LIKE A MOFO!!! Ended my day!! This was my worse opening ever and I will no longar us packers and pack myself or forever miss loads or not do video (I will get what I pack!!) Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked
  12. Hukturn as I said "individuals that don't Listen, Care or both. I did scratch off loads when certain individuals manifested after me or I passed if I saw them on a load. My instructor taught me from day one, "you are responsible for your own ass!!" His voice was loud and clear in my head. I and others tried to educate the individuals, but it was apparent it didn't do much good, very sad! Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked
  13. Just recently I have encountered a few folks that either don't listen, don't care or both. One particular individual was so bad I advised the 4-way team I was flying camera for that I would not board the aircraft if this particular person was on the load. I admit to my mistakes and damn near killed myself and another jumper due to a combination of errors on both our parts three weeks ago (I am sure it wil be on skydivingmovies soon), but!! I listen to others and try not to make the same mistake twice. There are those individuals out there that seem just not to get it and the scare the hell out of me. Everyone is on the Swoop vs standard pattern issue and so on. What about the damn morons that fly diagonally across the pattern or enter into swoopers alley at 600 ft (after specifically being warned it is a high performance landing zone, avoid it if not doing HP landings), track up the line of flight cause they might not make it back, spiral down over the center of the landing area for whatever damn reason, etc etc. I am venting yes, normally I sit in brakes and land near the end of the pattern to avoid those little issues, but I cant avoid some moron tracking up the line of flight or being on the ground and having some type of issue that results in me needing to medically treat a broken jumper. So in a nutshell: Pay attention, keep your head on a swivel and follow the DZ landing pattern rules, use common since (don't track either up or down jump run), be patient enter the pattern and fly predictably, last but not least Swooping is not a crime (give them a little space) Okies feel free to flame me or chime in and add to the common sense approach. Stay safe! Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked

  15. 1) Currently at my skill level Slot plus pack job (if I offer to do video I pay my own slot) 2) 5 X 7 $6 8 X 10 $10, they are on photo paper not inkjet 3) I don't give away digital work (unless it's a friend I trust) Once you give them the digital image they now own the rights to it and can reproduce it whenever. 4) Same as above, exception is tandem video/stills. 5) They paid for the slot they can have a HD to DV firewire as they covered the slot. 16. Wow I get the opposite at my DZ. I am new to the video/still arena and jumped a lot of camera on my own money to develop my skills (and I still do so today) I now find that when I arrive at the DZ I am often asked to fly camera and have to be an asshole and decline when I am there to free fly. I have gotten a few good shots and the jumpers that want them eagerly offer to pay me for them. i have given some work away to folks that have allowed me to film them why I was learning (yes, I crashed through a group or two). I guess at My DZ they understand a the following: FTP: $700 HC5: $1000 D70 $800 W/A lens $500 Assoc Hardware $200 Total $3200 I now rarely give work away as it dilutes the market from the camera flyers that are making a living at skydiving. I am still new also and I won't "ALWAYS" get the shot, if they want 100% of getting the shot, I send them to one of the DZ staff video flyers that I know will get it for them. 18. Holy Shit I got my "D" and now I am a Lic. Asshole? If I would have know thats all it took I would have joined the sport 22 years ago. Well eventhough I am late I must be a dick cause I check my friends gear on the plan, I must be a complete selfish prick to pass up the jump with my friends to go on a coach jump for somewone who needs a sign off, I am totally inconsiderate when I ask a packer for an ASAP pack job cause I need to do a tandem video cause a regular had a personal issue and had to leave, and I am a complete jackass to scratch off a VRW jump cause the 8-way team has jumped all day without video and asked if I could do one. I guess all the jumpers that were senior to me that spent countless hours teaching me how to be a safe skydiver are total morons!!! How dare they give me their experience and advice that might save my life or someone elses some day Now that I have vented you need to step away from the monitor and think a bit. You as the baby in the sport (a.k.a newbie, tourist, or whatever you want to call yourself) need to be the assertive one to ask for help, don't expect folks to beg you to teach you (how many people wiped your ass to teach you that skill? I bet only two Rant over Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked
  19. Lisa Briggs did one hell of a job putting all that together, some of the best advice on the forums. Congrats on your "A"!! Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked
  20. Is anyone using a Centruy optics wide angle with HC5/7? If so which one? I see a .3, .6 and .7 but nothing in the .4-.5 range Am I reading their specs wrong? Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked
  21. No cut out for the eye piece, camera comes out of the box very quickly. $800 camera, $150 wide angle lens, yes its worth it. It also reduces snag hazard to a degree. Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked

  24. I am intrested in your post, so are you saying I made a mistake don't do what I did (but I started freeflying at 50 jumps and I am currently continuing) or are you saying I started freeflying at 50 jumps (made an error in judgement) and I am back on my belly until I develop decent belly skills? Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked
  25. Yo Kungen, You have had lots of posts here so I will add to the list: When I entered sport I felt the same way, three years later I have a slightly different view. Yes RW is not my thing, but I also need to be safe in the sky with the other jumpers that are there with me. Decent belly skills are important in freeflying as well. How do you expect to be able to track away from a group without good tracking skills? How will you develop decent tracking skills without decent belly skills? Will the freeflyers jump with you with a lack of belly skills? these are all questions you need to answer and talk to the freeflyers at your DZ or better yet talk to your instructors. Freefly jumps sometimes don't go as planned and if you lack belly skills what will your fallback plan be? So you asked for a hint: 1) talk to your instructor 2) talk to the local freefly coaches 3) I agree with the prior post "Do around 100 jumps on your belly" 4) make a SAFE progression to freeflyinfg Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked
