  1. I just took Jat Stoke's Course down at Skydive Elsinore. I have to agree with DSE 100%, Jay will provide you with the tools needed to be successful in the class. His documentation and presentations are out of the approved manuals by the USPA. He will challenge your flying skills as well as his other evaluators (During one of my cat C practice dives, Keri Bell sent me across the sky on an attempted spin stop, for those whom know me I'm pretty stocky and I swear I saw a grin as I tumbled away as my partner docked and gave a sign). But to reiterate what DSE also said, Jay would bust his own mother if she did not perform satisfactory on the evaluation jump. Jay will explain what you as a candidate need to do to be successful in getting your license to learn!! Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked

  4. DSE and others, It appears the NZ air authority is making issues with AAD cutters. I am currently at Skydive Elsinore and just spoke with a jumper that had recently returned from NZ. He had all of his Cypress and TSA documentation but was still prohibited from taking his rig on the aircraft. Fortunately for him his friend was remaining in country and had his rigged shipped. Jay Stokes (USPA president) is here at Elsinore and was made aware of the issue for further follow up. Blues, Feeble Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked
  5. Sorry for your loss. I lost my pal several years ago and "Topper's" collar still hangs from my rear view mirror today. I haven't had the heart to get another dog. My daughters soulless cat has run of the house. Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked
  6. Hey All, I am posting this at a friends request. They just returned home from NZ and had significant issues when trying to return to the U.S. To whomever is interested: On March 3rd 2009, my wife and I were detained by airport security at Auckland International Airport in New Zealand for having a Cypress 1 AAD in a rig we were taking back to California. The reason for the detainment was the cutter was determined to be explosive and was not allowed on the flight. We were told we had two choices. Remove the cutter from the rig and ship it back to California for $600.00 NZD on a cargo flight, or ship the entire rig as cargo on another flight. We had 2 hours to spare at this point so we opted to ship the rig. Cargo personnel found a provision in their rules .. article 2.3.4.4 allowing Avalanche rescue backpacks with a similar device in them to board as long as the explosives contain less than 200 mg. of material. The cargo experts who deal with these regulations daily concluded the cutter was harmless and could be shipped even after consulting with the agency who wrote the article. Everyone , including the airline personnel concluded the cutter presented no harm. Airport security however did not see it this way, and said it could not be shipped on a passenger plane. By this time we had 20 minutes to catch our international flight. The NZ airline reps requested the Airport security officer be specific as to the regulation that would prevent the device on the plane and since there were none specific to parachuting he announced it would fall under general explosives. No one was at rest with this decision but it stood. So... with 15 minutes to spare we pulled the reserve pulled out the cutter and handed it over. We have traveled to New Zealand 8 times with an AAD in the past 9 years and it has never been an issue. The officer also stated the provision re: our aad has been in effect for 6 years. Isn't it ironic that the New Zealand Parachute Industry Association last year mandated to jump in New Zealand you must have an AAD. As New Zealand is an unbelievably beautiful place to skydive it is a shame to not try to obtain a waiver against this current situation. Anyway, in regards to your diagnosis or lack there of, have they had you swallow the pill size camera to photo your insides? If no, ask to have it done as it will give them a true look without have to put the camera in the other way Phil Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked

  11. 0/6/ Well after 4 brief years in sport, a lot of advice, and a non-skydiving related knee surgery...... I reached 1,000 skydives. I was very fortunate that I got to make that jump with 22 of my friends out of the Otter at the new Skydive Sacramento (Donny was flying right seat, but I know he was there in spirit). My newly anointed Skygod (just kidding Folks were busting my chops calling me one right before the pied the the hell out of me) but here is 2 cents worth the advice anyway.... "If you think you know it all, you're foolish....Learn from those you trust and NEVER disregard their advice... Hell you trusted them for a reason" Edited at the advice of someone wiser than I Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked
  12. 0/8/1 Jumped at Skydive Sacramento (New DZ in Lincoln, CA, just North of Sacramento). Had an absolute blast!!! The DZO is building a drop Zone based on fun jumping rather than a tandem operation. Yes he will do tandems, but his primary focus is to promote the sport and cultivate new skydivers. In the next few months SDS will be in their permanent home with a large grass landing area, separate high performance landing area (with a swoop pond being developed by swoopers) and a 10,000 square foot hanger to pack in!! What a great weekend!!! Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked
  13. Sorry to hear you feel this way. 1) The DZ's I have been to are clean and well kept (makes me wonder which you went to as I want to avoid them) 2) If your bored at 50 jumps you are not trying hard enough. there are so many different disciplines to choose from and progress in (you must be a legend in your own mind if you are bored doing 100 jumps a year) 3) It is the same everywhere in life unless you live in a bubble...why tip toe through life to safely arrive at deaths door??? 4) Dangerous??? holly shit don't drive your car, take a commercial flight or walk across the street we would not want you to get a boo boo. I won't rant..... but it's tempting Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked
  14. You cannot teach common sense, but you can enforce the rules. I know of several DZ's that are not having issues with patterns. Every DZ will have occasional issues with the pattern; it is very important that the DZO, DSM and ST & A are all on the same page and enforce the rule unilaterally. If anyone of the three cave the rules become useless. Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked

  16. Hey All, We all know the price of fuel and the economy smacked our sport pretty hard. I have noticed a steady decline in up-jumpers and was wondering what would make you come back to the DZ and start jumping again. I purposefully did not include lower jump ticket prices. We all know that is a factor and it appears some of the DZ's are dropping their prices as fuel comes down in price. Thanks for your time....... Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked
  17. My plan is to be out, but I have to jump either before or after my son's soccer game. Watching son kick ass on the soccer field> than jumpeing Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked
  18. Woot, I have 8 years till I can retire!!! Thanks Everyone Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked
  19. I sincerely hope the other DZ's follow suit. I have noticed a significant decrease in up jumpers since fuel and jump tickets have been on the rise. I understand the need to pass along cost of fuel increases to the jumpers, but I sincerely hope they will pass along the fuel savings as unilaterally as they did when fuel increased in price. (Unfortunately, I doubt this will happen) It makes one ponder these thoughts: 1) If the DZO’s choose to increase their profit margin and keep jump tickets at the higher rate compared to price in fuel will you jump more, less or the same? 2) Since up jumpers tend to bring folks out to do tandems, will the higher prices of jump tickets ultimately hurt the DZO by less jumps being made by up jumpers and thus a decrease in tandems? (I know this is a Small number) 3) Again with higher prices means less asses in the seats. Will DZO’s be content to send lighter loads with mostly tandems? I know tandems are where the money is made, but maintenance costs and lease payments will remain the same regardless of the number of up jumpers that are or aren’t on the plane providing additional income to the DZO. I know my jump numbers are significantly down this year due to the increase in ticket prices and fuel for my vehicle. I would be inclined to jump more if jump tickets drop with the decrease in fuel prices. Fire Safety Tip: Don't fry bacon while naked
