  1. I landed in a blackberry bush in Oregon after a wingsuit jump. I flew too far away and couldn't make it back. I didn't choose a good landing location since at 1000 feet I noticed it had stakes everywhere. I chose a backyard that had a dirt road in the middle of it. I missed the road by a few feet and rent through a bush, fortunetly not busting my self up on the rocks. It took me a while to get out of there and then clean myself up for one more jump. I also had to clean all the berry and blood stains off my stuff once I got home. It did make for cool video. 2. Paratech : R.A.G.E More info on this canopy (Ram Air Guiding Engine) and the concept behind it. Described as a swoop machine. http://p4961.typo3server.info/43.0.html BASE 1224, Senior Parachute Rigger, CPL ASEL IA, AGI, IGI USPA Coach & UPT Tandem Instructor, PRO, Altimaster Field Support Representative
  3. That's not exactly how I understand it. The alternate is usually closed to anyone who isn't doing a tandem or filming a tandem. If you've never been out there, go take a look when the main landing area is clouded in. It's very hilly, and I wouldn't want to land there. Have you tried calling Skydive Kauai? 4. If it has reception yes, but it would record ground speed. GPS records altitude, latitude, and longitude at each interval (mine does it once per second). It is useful for flight as well as ground navigation and logging. It is true that the max speed recorded will be the plane's speed. However using Paralog 2.1.7 and a GPS unit, it's easy to see what horizontal distance you've travelled throughout the entire skydive. You could just look at the breakoff altitue to the pull altitude and see what your glide ratio is, horizontal speed, vertical speed, 3-D speed, heading, and turn rate. The Google Earth connection is really cool too. You can also attach a video with the jump profile and sync up the data. I've only used it for wingsuit flights though, and haven't tried the video sync yet. 5. That's called a lark's head knot. It seems better to me as well. It's like that on my BASE rig, but not my new skydiving rig. The bridle on my skydiving rig doesn't have the 3" long loop, it's probably too short to lark's head it through. Maybe the kill-line P/C has something to do with it. 6. I'm just wondering if anyone is using one that works. I've read that some of Parasport Italia's altimeters have a timer function. I don't want to get into a debate over whether they're a good idea or not or other ways to decide when to initiate deployment. I've searched other posts and haven't found any info on which ones work for longer terminal BASE jumps. I've watched some videos on skydivingmovies.com where people have an audible going off during deployment, so I'm curious what other people are using and how to use them. Are there any that work for BASE and log data as well? I tried using my Neptune in my pocket in manual mode at Bridge Day and it didn't log. I suppose a GPS unit would probably work for logging, my Garmin Foretrex 201 has a resolution of 1 second. 7. I think I understand the cutaway problems with reverse risers while skydiving (don't use them). In BASE however, how I understand it, the reverse risers are stronger because of the lack of the hole in the center. I don't care about a hard cutaway since I'm only wearing one parachute that I want to stay attached until I'm on the ground. Is it true that reverse risers are better/stronger/safer for a single parachute system that you still want to be able to cut away in case of water landings or other times you need to ditch the canopy on the ground? 8. Before V2.6.0 my average speed indication on the Neptune at 3,6,9,12k and overall seemed accurate and matched the data that I'd see in Paralog. Now since in V2.6.0 "Jump log speed calculations have been improved to prevent turbulent airflow result in wild velocity readings." these calcluations seem way off. I'm waiting for the next version to actually fix what they broke, similar to the battery indication changes they made recently. I've seen similar results on two other Neptunes. I don't have mine in front of me, but occasionaly I'll see stuff like 250+ mph when I know I haven't gone that fast, or stuff like you said 99mph in a head down. Besides that I love the Neptune. 9. For me I enjoy trying new things, but only once I know I'm ready for them. I know some skydivers that refuse to freefly, never night jump, never want to swoop, never BASE, or only from bridges. I think that's fine for some people, but part of becoming a better skydiver is to push your limits. Of course we all have our own risk / reward tradeoffs and limits. By practicing things like a cross wind or down wind in the right conditions, you'll be more ready for it when the conditions arn't right and more likely to walk away from it. 11. I think the spinning question has been covered already, but I thought I'd ad my family situation. I did one AFF when I was 18, and then started back up again last year at age 25. I only told my parents about a month ago, and that was mainly because I just did a couple of BASE jumps. My main reason for not telling them was financial, and I pretty much already knew how they felt about skydiving. The best part of the conversation was when my mom asked me "so why don't you just go jump off a bridge", and I said "ok, I'm doing that next weekend". My parents reacted pretty much as I expected and are still upset about it, as well as now I'm struggling to make payments on things they used to help me out with. I'm still glad I told them, mainly in case anything went wrong I'd want them to know that it was my decision to jump and how I feel about it and prepare for it. I've invited my parents to the drop zone but they haven't made it out there yet. I got my sister to do a tandem and showed that video to my parents. Good luck in the AFF course, listen to your instructors and I'm sure you'll do fine. I expect a constant battle with my parents over it, but it's still worth it for me. 12. How's the skiing footage this year? It's usually pretty good, it get's people hyped up for the upcoming season. Of course they make you pay $15 and it only plays on certain dates. Using the free lift ticket that comes with the ticket is difficult since it's only midweek, early or late season. It does get some cool WS / Skydiving / BASE video out to a larger audience though. 13. Hey Mike, Great job on that BD jump, that was impressive. I think my girlfriend Leah shot some video of it from the bridge, I'll try to upload that next week some time. I'd love to see Johnny's video of that jump if it survived his water landing. That is really awesome to come back to BASE after a 40 year break and to do your first square jump off a bridge. All of us owe you a lot of thanks for starting the sport of BASE. It was great hearing about and reading your article on the '66 El Capitan jump. I'm lucky to have been able to be in Johhny's FJC at the same time and get a feel for what it was like for you to come from the early days of skydiving / BASE into the present. I also look foward to seeing Marah's "Gravity" movie once it comes out. 14. http://www.leisuresportsphoto.com/mp_client/pictures.asp?pagenum=14&action=viewphotos&size=fullsize&id=862201&eventid=11764 It isn't video, but click on the right arrow a few times and fill in the blanks with your imagination. 15. I did my first two jumps at Brdige Day also. Thanks to Johnny Utah for the instruction presented in his FJC / BASE camp. Thanks to Apex, CR, piercewhat, some CA locals, and others for your help as well. Nick, according to Jason's last email, there were 135 first timers. I think someone said during one of the meetings that was a record. I believe that's probably the number that registered, I personally know 2 of those that didn't show. I can already see why some call this the dark side of the sport. 16. Sounds like fun, I'll be there to work on my RW skills. Now I've got to try to come up with a costume to wear that night. BASE 1224, Senior Parachute Rigger, CPL ASEL IA, AGI, IGI USPA Coach & UPT Tandem Instructor, PRO, Altimaster Field Support Representative
  17. Relax. Be loose. If you start to turn once released, dip the opposite shoulder (twisting on your roll axis) to stop the turn. Same thing with 360's, you have plenty of time / altitude to complete the turn. Don't rush it, turn slowly and you shouldn't have a problem stopping the turn by using your shoulders & arms. Have fun, good luck. BASE 1224, Senior Parachute Rigger, CPL ASEL IA, AGI, IGI USPA Coach & UPT Tandem Instructor, PRO, Altimaster Field Support Representative
  18. Hey, I'll be there for my first BASE jump(s). My girlfriend flygirl1 will be there to watch / video. We'll see you there. 19. Any details on the Wingsuit challenge? What's the competition for, total distance or something like that? BASE 1224, Senior Parachute Rigger, CPL ASEL IA, AGI, IGI USPA Coach & UPT Tandem Instructor, PRO, Altimaster Field Support Representative
  20. If you're there during the night, go party your ass off in the club district. I forget the name of it, but I had a lot of fun. I can also highly recommend the skiing near there, but it's probably too late in the season for that. The snow was great when I was there in August. 21. I love snowboarders, I just have more fun on skis. The sport is different than the people, and I ride with snowboarders plenty. A good friend of mine used to board with a T-shirt that said "I love skiiers". It was great. Alanab, are the mountains there open already? If so, I'm jelalous. I'll be up in Tahoe this weekend, but alas only to party. We were getting freshies the weekend before Halloween last year at Kirkwood. 22. This sums it up nicely. http://www.alti-2.com/Neptune_product_pages/neptune.htm#logbook_features I didn't actually see the "extended log" they were talking about. I saw all the details on the Neptune for the last 255 (yes 2^8 - 1) jumps. After scrolling back past that point, it wrapped around to the most recent jumps I had made. I didn't try pushing the previous jump button another 255 times. Ironically, I had done around 255 jumps in the past year. The total freefall time and total jump numbers are still up to date. I'm not worried about the older data since I back evertyhing up to Paralog. 23. I think I heard they were opening another DZ, I'm not sure when or where exactly. Santa Rosa was a cool DZ, cool people. I only jumped there a few times. BASE 1224, Senior Parachute Rigger, CPL ASEL IA, AGI, IGI USPA Coach & UPT Tandem Instructor, PRO, Altimaster Field Support Representative
  24. That might be Doc, a packer in Davis. I think he used to work at Northstar or Sugar Bowl;. He gave me some advice that helped on my 360's and half pipe skills when we were watching some skiing videos at Skydance later the same day. I was wearing my camera helmet a few days at Kirkwood this season after skydiving the day before and didn't realize I left my Dytter inside it until it beeped 4 1/2 times at the top of the Wall chairlift. I think I brought my Neptune with me before too. Maybe I'll see if I can get it to log a jump when I'm tucking a run this season. It's logged a few in the car ride from the mountains and commerical airlines. 25. I'm a skiier, I have been for 24 years. It's never been boring. There's always a way to push it to the next level. Whether that be going faster, bigger, working on park / pipe / rail skills, new grabs and spins and tricks, big cliff drops, chutes, or hitting the technical steeps and deeps. Snowboarding is boring, it was cool for a while, but more people are starting to realize skiing is where it's at.
