    Torture

Also, from http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/1418304.stm: "The [Hague] tribunal is the first international body for the prosecution of war crimes since the Nuremberg and Tokyo trials (...) The tribunal may not try suspects in absentia, nor impose the death penalty." One reason to ratify its creation?

    Torture

Isn't the move by Sen. McCain to support an anti-torture amendment to the Defense Appropriations Bill and the backing by Gen. Powell a sufficient proof? http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/news/politics/12825913.htm As a matter of fact, I know it did not make it to google news (their share price is prolly more important), Spain just ruled (like Belgium tried) that its justice is competent for judging crimes against humanity, committed out of Spanish territory, even when no Spanish citizen was involved. On the other hand, is there any country concerned by crimes against humanity that still allows death penalty? McCain again: "What all this means is that America is the only country in the world that asserts a legal right to engage in cruel and inhuman treatment." http://mccain.senate.gov/index.cfm?fuseaction=NewsCenter.ViewPressRelease&Content_id=1611 So the President should be well treated as long as he is not arrested on foreign soil by a US agency ;)
  3. They have it listed in their downloads - is there more information that you have found? If you look at this page (prerequisites): http://www.paralog.net/index.php?prerequisites.htm The penguin is grayed out.
  4. Unfortunately, here is what I just received: "Klaus is correct, our decision is to not publish the protocol at this time." Which I answered: "Lara, I am only interested in a product I bought and cannot fully use. As I have now discovered, Paralog does not support Neptune under linux. Judging by the number of hits on the Dropzone thread (1350 in 3 days), I am not the only one concerned by this issue. Thank you for answering but, if this decision is final, it is rather disappointing." I think that concludes this attempt.
  5. Thank you Brian. I also received this answer from Lara@Alti-2: "I'm sorry for any confusion regarding the logbook. I'll see if I can make the user manual more accurate in that regard. To clarify: the 10 jump full profile and the 200 jump logbook details will look identical in your Neptune's logbook. The difference between the two is that the 10 full profiles can be downloaded to Paralog where you can see a graph of your jump and export the data as you wish. Past 200 jumps, you will see basic information in your Neptune - the jump number, date, and freefall time. The number of jumps that will be stored past 200 is dependent on the memory usage." http://www.alti-2.com/Neptune_product_pages/neptune.htm#logbook_features PS: 255? Sounds like the usual hard deck ;) What is in jump 0? Total time?
  6. Hope that was not too long ;)
  7. I assume this is me, so I will answer this one: I first asked the question here to see if there was an obvious answer but immediately sent a message to Alti-2 when I saw the amount of replies. The answer from Alti-2 was very friendly, but bears the fearful "The information in this email is confidential and may be legally privileged. It is intended solely for the addressee." Anyway, I hope I still can quote part of it: "For now, we have an agreement with Paralog for Neptune communication protocol that we intend to honor." I totally respect that, so I forwarded this message to Paralog, cc Alti-2 asking if they would mind opening the protocol. The answer from Klaus Rheinwald was very quick, written at past 8PM for him: "if I understand the attached emails and the statement on their web-site correctly, it is Alti-2's decision not to publish the protocol." Klaus' answer was also cc'd Alti-2, so I hope to hear back from them sometimes soon. As far as I can read, I am not the only one who would not disagree with a bit of change. Also, I never thought about the security issue because I do not use the Neptune as a primary altimeter and I doubt anyone would ever do that (tampering), but there is a valid (if theoretical) point here. That would suck if someone changed your alarms without you knowing it ;) To beowulf ("I would much rather put together my own version of Paralog, then when I feel that it is good enough I would possibly try selling it as an alternative to Paralog"), I was more thinking of a simple free program that let you download, upload and maybe read the log book for a start. Anybody would still be free to sell it in anycase. Maybe for a donation to a Fund For Free Crutches. I am everything but a diplomat and I don't have much hope. However, I will post updates if anything moves... PS: Isn't that funny that the spell checker does not know about altimeters?
  8. For a buck or two? As far as the Neptune goes, I am sure a bunch of them would be willing to give a few minutes of their time to the community. After buying all the hardware, I am completely broke. I wouldn't mind spending some time (for free) on a soft that makes the equipment more accessible. I would not be surprised that sales for this device increase, and would consider this a fair deal. If I read correctly the pre-install splash screen (i have not installed it), the author of the current download software has now a very limited time to develop it further. Why not open the protocol then? Let's see what others can do with it. That would not infringe 'intellectual property' and Alti-2 does not have to take side. They could wait and watch. Nobody should be jumping with something they do not endorse. I certainly would not, but that would bring in my eyes a much higher value to the neptune. I could maybe fake jumps, would it be a big deal?
  9. Someone has to say this ;) If you remove the brakes on your car, it ceases to be street legal. I don't know if there is anything like dive legal, but you probably have some moral responsibility towards the other jumpers.
  10. Yes. Quite nice interface where I could navigate quite easily before reading the manual. I would bet quite a lot that uploading and downloading commands are different, and that they could publish a subset of these. I understand their concern but, as (not) far as I saw, everybody denies any liability anyway. Wouldn't it be fair to let me estimate my own risk? Again, I apologize in advance for the partisan undertones. As _Am wrote, I could just be quiet and figure it out by myself. This question has apparently not been asked before and I am only trying to understand the pros and cons.
  11. I thought Paralog was based in Hamburg, Germany? Haven't jumped at Byron yet, but that will happen as soon as I can hit the landing target a few times and get a license. It sucks to suck.
  12. Sorry, it probably takes a lot from someone on this site. This was not my intention. It is just that the manufacturer says it is not affiliated with the software author, so why not open the protocol if they do not write anything on their own? I understand that they worry about safety. Just create some sort of official stamp that unreviewed projects will not have.
  13. This is exactly what I did not want to do. I will try to ask nicely to Alti-2 before attempting anything like that.
  14. Well, Alti-2 says it is not affiliated with the writer of the downloading software. I do not need this guy's intellectual property, nor his soft. To change the subject, does anybody knows how many jumps can be logged and if it is saved when I change the battery. It seems that I can only review the details for the last 10 jumps, is that true? I think I remember reading that the demo version of the download sw can only take 20 jumps/book. What happens if there are 100 jumps in the unit? Are they lost?
