Good luck finding something cheap that's less than 6 years old, unless it's been jumped a whole lot. You might want to expand your search to slightly older gear that's still in good condition, is freefly friendly, and will sell for less. You'll probably want to downsize after a while so going used should save you some money in the long run as you can resell it at almost the cost you bought it at. I've seen a few people use them and dropzone's that have them on their rental gear. Depending on where the control unit is mounted, it shouldn't be too difficult to slide open the plastic cover and turn the switch to off. I've even seen some people that have the control unit mounted on the front of their rig, attached to a lift web or something, to make this even easier. Are you an experienced skydiver? You should fill out your profile. I jumped in Mesquite once and took a few friends along to do tandems and was really happy with the way we was treated there. They were much nicer than the other two Las Vegas DZ's that I called. If you're experienced, I think it's the only good place to jump near Las Vagas. As far as other things to do, it's Las Vegas, baby, Vegas . I'm sure you'll think of something. There's a Flyaway wind tunnel there, but it's not quite as close to really skydiving as the Skyventure ones are. Have fun . I don't think the actual code that determines whether or not an AAD will fire is as simple as everyone tries to make it seem. I don't think the manufacturers will release the exact details or code of their firing parameters because that is their intellectual property. Some of the things that an AAD has to do is determine the pressure altitude when you've taken off in the aircraft, when you're in freefall and under canopy, and lots of other things that they're not going to give us all the details to. Don't forget that the Expert Cypres also allows some extra altitude to compensate for the burble of a belly to earth skydiver, and will fire at around 1050 feet in a pressure chamber, if the skydiver is falling back to earth, or inside an aircraft. Also remember that it shuts off below 130 feet. These important general firing parameters are in the manual, but I imagine that there's a lot more complex algorithms taking place inside the CPU of an AAD. USPA doesn't require any actual water jumps from a plane, only water training, usually conducted in a swimming pool or lake using really old gear. The live water training is required before getting a USPA B license. I'm not sure, but I think your BPA license should be valid to jump in the US, but it'd be a good idea to check with the DZs you plan on jumping at. As far as the original thread, I've gotten my A,B, and C soon after I qualified for them, I guess I like the numbers and privileges that come with them, and don't mind spending the $20 to see my name in Parachutist. edit: Night jumps are fun, and one good reason to get that B license. I don't know what it's like in Australia, but as far as currency in the U.S., it'd be nice to get your A license before taking significant time off. Then you can take longer breaks between jumps and focus on saving up for a rig. Keep you eyes out for good deals on used rigs. That way you won't have to spend as much money on recurrency training or repeat AFF jumps. Of course, spend some time reviewing everything, ask questions, and stay safe. edit: I don't think spending money on gear rental before you are licensed is really wasting money, especially if you're not very current. That way, you can rent and learn on bigger canopies than you're going to buy for your first rig. Once you feel comfortable on a canopy size that will last you for a while should you stop renting and buy a rig. I love em. I've got around 5 and I try to match the bead colors to what I'm doing that day. I've got one that matched my canopy colors on my old rig and also match my wingsuit pretty well, another one that matches my BASE rig and canopy colors, one that matches my new skydiving rig and canopy and jumpsuit colors, and another one that matches the SF Giants colors. Doesn't USPA 3-rd party insurance cover you against most claims you'd have to worry about? I don't know about a collision with another jumper, that seems like a 2-nd party or something. Of course, you should also have health insurance in case you mess yourself up. That, and try to avoid colliding with or killing someone. Added: Why can't you just wait to hire a lawyer once you need one? Is there an advantage to having one before the incident happens? I think it's kind of funny that it's named in the BASE Zone but not here. I agree that it's a good idea not to share site names with non-BASE jumpers, despite when it gets written about in the media. Skydivers looking to try some BASE are going to be reading about it here, and if they find names of sites that they think are jumpable, they might just go do it themselves rather than finding an experienced BASE jumper/mentor that can take them to the site and evaluate the weather conditions and the other jumpers gear, training, and experience and make a better decision on whether or not it's reasonably safe for them to jump. I think this is f-n cool , props to Jamie. One of my skiing motto's is: landings aren't as important as going big. Although I don't think I've dropped any cliffs bigger than around 40 feet. It's a lot of fun when the snow is good. Maybe Jamie should try some skydiving or tunnel flying to help his freefall stability
