So the victim's mother and grandmother chose to advocate for the "welfare" of the two boys over standing up for their daughter/granddaughter. WTF?? We're putting the onus on a 12-year-old (possibly 13 by this time) girl to get up in front of all the adults who have proven they are not on her side and testify?? There should be a petition to remove the girl from that home, since it's obvious she isn't safe there. It is quite possible, even likely, that the reason she did not testify is pressure from her family. The possibility of a 100 year sentence would put her under an enormous burden. I'm going to get hate mail for this, but here goes. Many, possibly most families in this situation would beg for mercy and chose forgiveness over a 100 year sentence with a minimum of 25 years served. That penalty is excessive, and despite his crime he is a loved part of the family. On the other hand, the 60 days is completely inadequate. That is why this story is making international news. The fault lies not only with the judge, but with the rigid system imposed on him. There is plenty of room for disagreement on the appropriate sentence, but in my mind something in the range of 8 to 10 years with at least 5 served would be correct. Punishment and deterrence must both be part of sentencing. The sentence given does not do either of these principles justice.
