  1. Just a guess Dave, but I would suspect canopies are different because they are non-motorized. I cant think of any non-motorized anything that is regulated outside of hot air balloons and gliders (?) perhaps - anyone can strap on skis and hit a double black diamond with no training, same with rock climbing, etc. Or am I totally off base on that guess? Edit to add that I suppose you could make an arguement that even hot air balloons are "motorized" after a fashion... As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...
  2. I am curious, have the total number of fatalities per year (all types, not just canopy related) increased or decreased when taking into account the total number of jumps per year? Obviously canopy fatalities are a huge concern. I am just wondering if there are more fatalities per jump now, or if the number has actually decreased and moved into a different category (moving from no/low pull to open canopy)? I hope that makes sense.... As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...
  3. With pull altitudes that high, at what point do you guys break RW and track? 5500'? And at what altitude do your tandems normally deploy? As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...
  4. Going by those parameters ALL canopies are by definition lethal. I have 3 canopies, a 190 Sabre, a 189 Safire and a 170 Vengeance - I think I could get any of my canopies to do at least a couple of those things on your list (some more than others obviously). Edit to add I am not trying to be sarcastic, just pointing this out... As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...
  5. Sabre 1 canopies are known for hard openings, and the 190 in particular. Just so you are aware. And to give you some perspective, my first rig I bought 7 years ago was a Vector 2, a Sabre 190 with 200 jumps on it and a PD 160 reserve (which I promptly exchanged for a Raven 218) - total cost $1,050. It also came with a Cypress with 2 years left on it. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...

  7. Yep, thats the one. Obviously after rereading it and seeing he had on two harnesses, thats not a concern for a "normal" two out situation - just illustrates that things noone ever imagined can happen (I knew I remembered something about asphyxiation - thanks Joe!). 8. Seen video of exactly that, but it also brings to mind a post I saw here a year or so ago of a guy that was doing an intentional 2 out (for the experience or whatever reason) - I forget exactly what happened - think maybe they downplaned and a riser went around his neck? - at any rate it almost killed him. If I had a stable biplane I wouldnt mess with it personally. A side by side that was squirrley I would consider trying to get them to downplane and get rid of the main... 9. Negative publicity doesnt seem to have hurt Lodi's business any.... As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...
  10. Just curious - when did the Nitro/Nitron start being considered fully elliptical?? I know when I started jumping I was told the Nitro/Nitron canopies were semi-elliptical like the Sabre2, and in fact a lot of jumpers at my DZ transitioned straight to them off of student status (50 to 100 jumps). I never saw anyone have any problems with them either (not that that means much). I also seem to recall ads for the Nitron where the 170 and 150 were listed as "Intermediate" class canopies at 1.2 -1.4 wingloading... As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...
  11. I have belted people in with my belt and had others do it for me. I was never worried in case of an emergency because the belt was attached to both of us, and my buddy has to get the belt off of me before he can get it off himself - and we take our belts off at 1000' anyways. It would have to be a catastrophic gonna-die-so-might-as-well-try kind of issue to make me get out below about 700' so I am willing to risk that 500ish foot margin. 12. FIFY Hey! Don't laugh. This IS speaker's corner, you know. LOL. If recreational pot is ever made legal I am buying stock in Nabisco, Ben and Jerrys and Frito Lay..... As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...
  13. Not aimed at anyone in particular, BUT if we accept the premise that us lower jump # skydivers "dont know what we dont know" (and I do agree with that to a large part), then shouldnt that be across the board? Meaning, when a low jump skydiver agrees with conventional wisdom they are congratulated, when in fact since they "dont know what they dont know" then they are simply parroting advice/wisdom without understanding what they are talking about. This thread (to me) is a prime example of that - hopefully the OP realizes that no BSRs were violated, just recommendations. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...
  14. I make no excuses. Oh, I quoted some facts to back up my arguement in my other post, but in this one I am basing my reply on yours: Yes it is. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...
  15. I could say the same for your ignorance. I sure hope noone you care about ever has to have chemo, since it is obvious from your post that you would deny them one of the most effective drugs for assisting with their nausea. As for recreational use, it is very well established that pot is MUCH less harmful than alcohol. Jack Herer's book The Emperor Wears No Clothes is a fascinating (if very biased) book detailing the history (social and political) of marijuana prohibition in the USA. Hint - the legal status of marijuana has much less to do with perceived social ills and much more to do with Dupont and the pharaceutical industry. In fact, when Anslinger brought the proposal for marijuana prohibition before congress in 1937, the main person to voice opposition was Dr. William C. Woodward, Legislative Council of the American Medical Association. Yes, for all you folks who believe pot has no medicinal value - the AMA was the largest opponent of marijuana prohibition. 16. YEAH....because the Arabs have been SO successful in their attempts to wipe Israel out. Do the years of 1948, 1956, 1967, 1973, 1978, 1982, 2006 and 2008 ring a bell? As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...
  17. Mmmmmmmmm.....space cake! Oddly enough though, the legal weed was one of my least favorite things about the Netherlands - not that I didnt like it, it was just the least of all the things to do and see there (for me at any rate). I will admit, it did enhance the Van Gogh Museum! As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...
  18. "I also believe that any medically beneficial substances in marijuana would be a lot more beneficial in easy to dose pills, preferably pills with as little adverse effects as possible." One of the biggest reasons Marinol was mostly a bust was that it didnt stimulate the appetite like smoking just plain old weed does. Thats a HUGE benefit for chemotherapy patients that are nauseated all the time - and so far our best scientists have not been able to synthesize a substance that has the same appetite stimulation that smoking a joint can give (not that our Government allows that much marijuana research to begin with...) . As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...
  19. Well, I like to get high AND I support legalization for medical reasons. I would love to see it legal for recreational use as well, but I think that's a long long shot. To be perfectly honest, I know more people who smoke pot than I know people who drink. I know more people who smoke pot than I know who don't. You would think the Government would want to tap into that revenue stream - or maybe it is more profitable to keep it illegal? As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...
  20. Just curious as to why you would consider 2.5K a "moronic" opening height? I havent done just tons of RW, but when I do we almost always break at 4.5K...after a good track and waveoff that usually puts me in the saddle between 3K to 2K.... As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...
  21. The only model of Sabre I would NOT fly again is the 190 with the double brake lines. I loved everything about it but the openings were just brutal. I switched sliders twice, tried every packing method, had several Sabre pilots and a couple of riggers pack it for me - nothing helped. It finally opened so hard it broke 9 lines and tore the bottom skin. I recovered the canopy and still have it, but I have no intention of ever getting it airworthy again. I think it will make a nice warm pair of pants and jacket. Honestly if I had figured a way to tame the openings I would still be jumping it. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...
  22. Wingsuits are the only one of those that have minimum jump number requirements and that is fairly recent. Downsizing and camera are recommendations or DZ specific in the USA... As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...
  23. Personally I would be more willing to take a one or two jump risk like that than I would jumping an entire repack cycle on gear I had not had inspected. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...
  24. Open it and inspect everything. The very first rig I bought at 28 jumps was a complete system - container with Cypress, 190 Sabre and a PD 210 reserve. It came packed and ready to jump from a friend of one of my coaches. I had my rigger open it and inspect everything - and found out that the reserve that was packed in it was a PD 160! That could have really sucked when I had my first cutaway 23 jumps later, having to land a reserve 30 square feet smaller than anything I had ever flown before... 25. Hey Mike will it take 2 jumpers or just 1? As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD...
