  1. Hi Rapaz, Arañaman Esteban just told me Cerro Torre has been jumped by now, by a climber-jumper, of course. However, he might be confused with the site you name, Cerro Mocho. You say your friend did it solo. Did what? Climb it, or climb it and jump it? The movie you mention is made by Werner Herzog, real name: "Schrei aus stein". It surely has some good footage of climbing and the spectacular Fitzroy region. Monsters of Patagonia: check out the Torres del Paine in Chile. Ronald

    "Bad Ideas" list

Reading the posts and reflecting on the original question: what about a "bad ideas" list. At first glance, it seems good to have such a list. However, with some imagination (and worse, looking at the fatality list) such a list can be endless. And such a list can never be complete either. People allways find ways to make new mistakes. In short, such a list can be made up of one sentence: "don't be such a dumb-ass" or, said nicer: "avoid stupidity". In order to behave like that, seek good and proper tuition. A possible negative effect of the bad ideas list is that beginners will just look at the list and take off on their own. A real no - no to me. I think it would be better to create a "how to practice safe base" list. Surely, a lot has been said already on how to do that. Ronald
  3. Assuming the previous 2 posts and the interpretation of the video are correct, I second Martins opinion 110%! Using clamps for packing a canopy, which I don't do anymore, is acceptable (BUT always count your tools). Using some packing device for packing a PC is not only not necessary, but potentially lethal. Ronald
  4. jasmin, I met 2 argentinian basejumpers in LB 12 days ago. Send me a PM and I will give you an email. They got a nice spot near Esquel. It's all theirs. Cheers, Ronald
  5. Mmm, Knowing Felix, he will only organise it for 1 person. Guess who that will be Ronald
  6. I will take my hat of for the first one to jump it. With the wages paid, a bribe should not be too expensive Ronald
  7. OOPS, coached by a famour Aussie base jumper I would say... Ronald
  8. I too can only agree with training and currency. For sure, Brian was trained opening a parachute with a ripcord. So, was he adequately trained on jumping a PC hand-held? I assume yes. But for sure, he was not current on that part. Then, what do you do with a hand-held PC when you go unstable? you pitch the moment you feel you go unstable? Or do you try to correct it? With all the risks included. Then, having quick reflexes helpes a lot too. We all know that these slow down with age. Brian was not the youngest anymore, so quick or not, his reflexes were not the same as in 1966. And finally, if you jump a hand-held PC, go unstable and pitch to low, you can die, regardless if you use SD gear or base gear. Just my 2 cents. I was not there. I did see Brians speech at BD 2005. Ronald
  9. I have an unvented Troll too. I have jumped it slider up and slider down, no problem. (I know where MDV is needed for though). I use a big mesh slider. The only time I had a hard opening (still on heading though) was after about 10 seconds track, and opening in that track. But then, you might have a harder opening on any equipment. In short, I like the Troll I have. Ronald
  10. I liked the guy turning around on the ramp several times, and then exit. Just give that a try! And the banner on the end says "BD 2003" Oops. Ronald
  11. I want to send you some info, but I can not find your PM. Sorry. Ronald
  12. " jumpers need to let go of what truly doesnt matter. ." Re: Fight Club. What about Brad Pitt signing up for a base course? Ronald
  13. Interesting to see that the discussion went the moderators way... While there are several base forums around, they tend to serve a "national" background (jumpers, sites, guidelines, etc.) As far as I can remember (and I am only human), the base zone served the aussie community, got popular, and served the global group. Now, based on the number of posts, and my gut feeling, it seems DZ.com is the leading base forum. For what it is worth, I tend to support one "global" base forum. If there is one, and it has that status: perfect. Besides, there can be 192 more "national" ones. (UN countries count). With that in mind, I see no reason to close down the base zone. And, if nobody posts there anymore, things will work out by themselves. And, I don't see a change of moderator will change that course. Ronald
  14. Of course there is Taipei 101, highest building in the world! Good luck with that. Now that I think of it, as far as I know, that building is still a virgin? Ronald

    BASE in Iran

Hello Iran, hello Behzad, Welcome to base. For some reasons, it is not the 1st world having those nice towers and buildings available for jumping, but nations like Malaysia, China, and now Iran! I tried to make it to your country after the WAG 97 in Turkey, as I met the Iranian accuracy team there. However, the visa application never worked out. If, however, a base event would / could be held, I would feel more then happy to go. Hmm, does that sound to much like inviting myself? But, then, what else to do with such a nice object.

    KL stories?

Graig, Teaser is OK, especially the amount of 180-s shown. Ronald Overdijk

    Amsterdam...

Michael, Quite a few buildings, but generally the finished ones are not accessable any more, and the ones under construction right now are not high enough (that is, for me). 1 or 2 cranes are jumpable though. Send me a PM if you are still in Holland. Ronald Overdijk
  18. Found in Rotterdam last sunday: base advocaten (which means: base lawyers). Alas, no camera with me. But google helped me find this http://www.baseadvocaten.nl/ I have to contact them in case of being caught Furthermore, I will post a pic tomorrow of "base canyon" found in the Westers Pyrenees, French side. I think it was an add for canyoning or something. No photoshop, of course. Ronald Overdijk

    Thailand

Hi, I'm in Thailand, Phuket, right now, and I know that there is jumping possible near Krabi (Tonsai? Railay?). Alas, no gear with me. Is there anybody around in about a 5-6 days from now? Send me a PM please, especially with the exact location. Thanks in advance, Ronald

    Eiger conditions

Mmm, mountains are mountains. They can be easily accessible and very difficult the next day. We (5 people) hiked up and jumped the mushroom august 2004, but we all agreed halfway up it was: 1) the most difficult hike/climb we had ever done. 2) we would NOT descend. 2 nights before it had rained in the valley and the upper Eiger slopes were covered with 2 mm of ice. Very slippery. Actually, we were glad to jump, that was the safest (for us, that is). In short, look at internet weather, just go there, and take your change. You just might need time, as well. About global warming: with all those new cracks, rockfalls, etc. We lose some exit points, we get some exit points. No need to rush Ronald Overdijk
  22. Mmm, sorry, I was not clear enough. He did not ask for a basejump He was just a wannabee basejumper. My statement about €€ was just a personal example, indicating that I can say I am rich, but that I just need to money to be so. Anyway, it is nice to see people are interested in base and would like to do it (with proper training off course) Ronald Overdijk
  23. I had a nice experience lately. After a jump (legal), a guy took some picz of me. He was very enthusiastic, which is good. Then he cheered at me, claiming he was a base jumper 2. I looked well but did not recognize him. (and I know a few). Then he said, I am a basejumper, but I just need to my first jump That way, I can say I am rich Interesting indeed. Ronald Overdijk
  24. Yep, it sure was nice. Good event, and perfect weather. Let's hope Rotterdam is as pleased and there will be a 2007 event. Ronald Overdijk
