  1. Yet background checks between family and friends are a bad idea. A criminal anticipating using a gun in crime is not going to agree to undergo a background check. Only the law-abiding people, for whom background checks are a waste of time, will bother to comply with such a law. Thus it accomplishes nothing to stop crime, and inconveniences and costs many innocent people. That's a bad way to create laws. This isn't a fair argument. While generally speaking, I am not in favor of expanded gun control or limits on weapon types, capacity or otherwise, being this broad is unreasonable. There are very few good arguments against basic background checks. If there was zero check at retail, anyone (literally) could go buy a gun, felon or not. Generally speaking it's only a short game measure to stop a person who is otherwise a criminal from obtaining a weapon but that doesn't mean that there isn't some merit in performing them. So in this regard, the long term effect is hard to exactly determine. The scope of your statement, and likely the amount of thought you have done on the matter, is too narrow to draw any kind of true conclusion. It would be necessary to consider the secondary effects of preventing criminals from buying weapons at retail to make any factual correlation to the effects of background checks on crime committed with or in the pursuit of a firearm. Basically, what I am saying is that you're generalizing and it's not a fair argument. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 2. I think that you're reaching with that statement. Almost every jump I make includes flying over swamp, freeway, lakes or trees. Not down low like in the video, but I also have chosen to swoop through sets of trees now and then. Risk management, not total avoidance of anything fun... what's next - stop skydiving cause sometimes people get hurt? ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. student radios

The Motorola Minitor series pager radios are the gold standard for ruggedness and reliability, although they are not cheap. Sometimes is takes a while to get particular units serviced if they quit working, so you may need 2 instructor transmitters (tranceivers actually) and 1 or 2 extra pagers (student radios). We use these as well because of the very high reliability. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 5. I wouldn't ever consider a "velocity" a safe/safer (or ever use that word in conjunction with a velocity) wing to fly. If you're a "conservative" or "casual" jumper you have no business jumping one, or a katana/crossfire class canopy either for that matter. The stiletto I would put between the katana class and the saber class - fun if you like to turn really fast otherwise pointless as far as a parachute to fly given the vast number of amazing canopies in the sabre class that fly very well. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 6. Except for a couple of smaller communities that aren't exactly close to whitewater - stay out of Milwaukee county if you want good schools - MPS is terrible. Mukwonago is a nice city in general if that's someplace you're considering and is reasonable for getting to Whitewater and Milwaukee. Any form of driving to downtown chicago from anywhere you would want to live that would be close to work just takes some effort, so not worth consideration most likely - unless you plan on being there all the time. There are a lot of other good communities too just takes some digging around and research on what you're looking for. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 7. I bolded some parts of your post that are key. You haven't jumped up until now for over a decade. While I do agree that things come back pretty quick in the sport - I can't imagine jumping anything near what I jump currently after taking 10 years off. You also said that you're not going to be jumping regularly. 100 jumps a year, do you do a 12 month season there in virginia? If so you're looking at 8-9 jumps per month. Likely jumping 1 day a month with around 30 days in between jumps? Even if you only do a 8 month season that's still only 12 jumps a month. That fact right there, makes anything in the crossfire/katana class a for sure no-go. If it was me, I would possibly consider going with a stilletto 135, since that is what you did have most(??) of your jumps on? That condition outstanding, with the number of intended jumps you plan on making - pilot / safire / saber2 / storm / spectre. Anything in that class is the reasonable canopy to jump if you don't want to kill or maim yourself given how often you intend to skydive. (Which for the record, I don't consider to be very much at all, not that there is anything wrong with that.) ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 8. Not true at all. Depends on the state. Where I am, if the contractor doesn't supply a certificate of insurance, the state makes the dropzone pay for coverage. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 9. I think that this is the point that we are trying to get at and everyone is doing a good job of dancing around it. This guy, in question here, had his rights infringed upon because NY State says he is legally insane for taking an anxiety medication. In this exact case, we don't know all the circumstances, but the point in my mind that should be the issue is due process. At what point do we get to just skip due process because an outside entity (private, local, state, federal) decides that it knows better. That to me is a huge red flag. It's a slippery slope that I don't think is a good place for us to be. There are far too many examples of private and public interests contorting the law to take things from people for us to willingly be going along with it on any issue. People need to stop thinking emotionally and start thinking more logically. We can't set a precedent for this type of thing whether it is guns, soda size, personal property rights, freedom of speech, etc. If anything - we should be going in the other direction. My post isn't super argumentative though, so I understand why you're all going to just ignore it. (This is also a major contributor to why I am unhappy with society's direction as it currently stands.) ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 11. Of course it is something wrong and it doesn't even compare to what was done here. As an IT professional, if information is accessible on the public facing internet via a given URL requiring no decryption or authentication I would consider it openly published. Data stored behind a firewall or other means of authentication is an entirely different story. AT&T was using security through obscurity. It's something commonly used, but in this case it shouldn't have been. Protecting customer information like email addresses in this manner is not very responsible. Just because the data didn't have a nice index (web page of links to the data) doesn't mean it wasn't published. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 13. Source citation? I can't tell you if that's true or not, but it seems silly to me that people are arguing that ammo is scares. Supply has greatly outstripped demand at the moment. It's panic buying because of a lot of reasons: Probable Causes DHS purchasing The bottom line is that the government is doing purchasing that doesn't seem entirely reasonable and it's causing people to be scared and they are panic buying. Dunno what to say, a friend and I were going shooting the other day and we hit 5 stores and couldn't find any ammo for his gun. Every retail outlet we tried was sold out of everything but shotgun shells. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 14. Don't have any particular experience with that. There is a video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbwB0p2ujR0 that might help?? I personally have only ever manually installed mssql express and moved databases around via backup/export. What I have going on is likely vastly different than most dropzones. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 15. One of the things that I like to tell my students that seems to make it set in for them is: You're doing a tandem skydive which in and of itself means that you're strapped to an instructor. Someone who has done this more than once and wants to do it again. The instructor wouldn't be able to have the skill and experience, not to mention choosing to go up for another jump if it was not likely that they would return to jump again. Maybe that will help put it in perspective. Or just look through the forum at the jump number counts, skydiving is all about about risk mitigation and management. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 16. Hey Everyone - if you're interested in hitting up this summer's Cheese boogie (Celebrating 50 years of operation for the Sky Knights Sport Parachute Club) the dates are August 8th-11th. Hope to see you there. More details as the date gets closer! ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 17. South Seattle has a 14' tunnel. Business is so good they're planning a second 14' tunnel on the North end of town. I kid you not. Crazy, I read this news yesterday as well about the chicago market - hoping it works out and I hope it's 14' round. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 18. yep. Though fwiw, when I do AFF, I wear mine on my right hand. It's fairly unnatural to have it over there, but I have a neptune and I got sick of students trying to tear the thing off my hand when they reach for the BOC. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 19. I have 3-4 jumps out of an R44. It's fairly standard small helicopter stuff. Jumping up while on the skids can cause the jumper to suffer a loss of their head and or cause problems by making the helicopter swing under the rotor to the point of it hitting the stops. None of these things lead to a happy helicopter pilot. Depending on age/condition of the helicopter much more than 4K can be an issue. I was in a chase helo(older R44) on one jump trying to follow another for outside pictures of the jumpers and the thing was shaking worse than a rabid raccoon by the time we got to jump altitude. I have heard of lots of people using them, I think they are a reasonable heli jump platform for a small boogie/dz. Reasonably cheap to operate. I wouldn't use them for anything other than the occasional heli jump day though. Wouldn't make a full time jump ship. No one has ever said anything to me ever about standing on the struts being an issue. We do try to leave all at the same time or if there is a 1 way and 2 way the 2-way is split across the sides so that the balance stays reasonable (i.e. weight coming off both sides). ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. I dunno - I haven't been happy with other options so far. I jump three of these cause when jenny was actually getting them made she did really great work, my suit even has some custom modifications for durability which is why I still jump and own the first jumpsuit I ever bought. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 23. As a straight skydiver, sure. As a tunnel rat, not likely. You need to be proficient on belly and back to get to the advanced head down stuff. Anyways - I'll just add my support for the point that your freefall skills are substantially ahead of your canopy skills. Please don't forget that as you start jumping again and roll up to the 500s, pre-1000s, etc. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 24. I'll look into it. I went to the Adobe web site to look at educator packages and even tried to purchase. However, their site REALLY doesn't like either Win 7 Pro, or Chrome, or both. If they can't make a simple order form work on a Windows PC I'm not sure I'm about to pay them a lot of money for their software. Dunno, I litereally just did the same thing on W7 Pro + chrome like 2 weeks ago. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 25. Yeah - it's the first thing I noticed too. Can't flare worth a damn. I'd guess he is afraid of the ground when he is coming in on a sub-conscious level. Depending on where he learned I can overlook the wingloading somewhat. It's not _that_ out of line for a starting jumper. Though, the small canopy plus slightly more aggressive wingloading doesn't make this easier that's for sure. Not to mention camera @ 100ish jumps... sigh. Let's just do it all at once. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me.
