  3. It's all relative right? I was at Quincy at the height of the boogie's popularity: 94 and 96. It was amazing. But you also could not mingle and party and jump with everyone. It was immense. Epic: yes. A 800 people boogie in a small place like FD: I'd call that epic too. Agreed! I was at both places during those big years and both were epic! - All of the sub-quotes are all fair statements. I was at WFFC in 2004 and 2005, so by that point it had gotten smaller but it was still 2000+ skydivers. So I somewhat know what you're talking about. My first morning there I watched a guy have a cypress fire right over the camp ground - that was crazy, still remember it fairly vividly. It is all relative though, I don't expect that there will ever be a boogie like that again. It's all strange factors, I mean - my DZ has super cheap jumps ($16) for our 50th anniversary through the end of the month and it hasn't even attracted any of the other area dropzone locals to even see what we have going on. People don't care about it as much - they want to go somewhere familiar make the jumps and go home. Same thing as said before really - there has to be a reason to go to a boogie. If someone had a C130, I'd be there w/o question or if there was some other "omg really" idea that never was done before, that would bring me in. Otherwise I jump at my home and pick one good party a year to go to at a nearby place. Or go somewhere for discipline jumps (like wingsuiting) ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 4. I had one when I first started shooting tandem video cause it made it substantially easier to frame shots. I took it off cause it was on loan to me at some point cause I could get the same results without it. At some point I ended up doing more tandems than video and have bought a ring right now because I find that i produce better work with it given less currency on specifically tandem video. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 5. This question is an odd one, because different jumps have different requirements. A better question would be about the 'strategy' that people use with their audible. Right off the top, most audibles have 3 alarms, and most skydives have 3 'key' altitudes, with those being break-off, pull, and your hard deck, so there seems to be a natural fit there. As previously stated, some people will set them for just under their key altitudes, counting on their eyes and brain (and conventional altimeter) to keep track of things, and the audible is there if you blow it and lose track of those things. I disagree with this idea because if you do make that mistake, you don't find out until it's too late and the mistake has been made. Another idea is to set them right at your key altitudes, but due to the speeds were falling, even when you do that your key altitude is well above you by the time you hear and react to your audible. My thought has always been to set them 500ft above your key altitudes, so you know what's coming up and have time to act accordingly. If you want to break off at 4500ft, set the first beep for 5000ft, and you stand a good chance of turning away and tracking right at 4500ft. Ditto for your pull altitudes, give yourself 500ft to get the hackey out. So what about 'relying' on your audible with that plan? It could happen, but it's up to you to be honest with yourself about your altitude awareness. If you set your audible 500ft above break off, and it comes as a complete surprise to you every time it goes off, you need to step up your game in terms of altitude awareness. If you have recently checked your visual altimeter, and that 'clock' in the back of your brain starting to tick-tock a little louder, and the beep 500ft above break off is no surprise to you, then you're doing OK. In my mind, if you're going to lose altitude awareness, it happens well above missing your key altitudes so I'd rather have your audible clue you in before you smoke through those altitudes, not after. I like all this. As for relying on it, I do,.. dunno I mean I look at the ground too. The alti on my hand has batteries and can take a crap too, etc. I mean, I watch the ground too for the most part. Internal clock, etc. Dunno - I don't look at the alti on my hand that often really. Breakoff 3500 1700 with canopy alarms at 1500, 1100 and turn altitude. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 6. HAHA thats great, I actually stumbled upon that chart in my browsing/searching of DZ on how to pick a rig. I haven't read it all the way through, but have been following the chart. Thanks for the reminder to read this article fully. I would suggest that you stay away from dropzone.com forum advice when picking a used rig, canopy size advice and anything that may or may not get you killed. You don't know who the hell any of these people are. As far as what gear to jump is concerned as a total newbie, dropzone.com is only really good for the classified section. Get enough experience in the sport from locals so that you can sort the wheat from the chaff before you take advice from this forum. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 9. I was wrong on my price above, it's only $120 an hour that we lease ours at. I don't know what kind of calculations you're doing though. With our aircraft and 4 jumpers on board $24 slots breaks even if you're paying $4.00/gal for fuel. If you're paying less than that or doing tandems, that's profit. If you're paying more than that or not putting 4 people on every plane, you have loss that needs to be made up with tandems. All of those numbers include paying your pilot. It has to be profitable to lease out the plane otherwise as an aircraft owner it's more worthwhile to let it sit and not have it building up hours, needing more MX, getting closer to needing an overhaul, etc. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 11. I was at dollar daze for the last few years but did not go this year. Overall, I think it's one of the last bastions of old school boogies which is cool. When there were 800+ people there a few years ago, it was amazing and out of this world. Last year, it wasn't as fun with only a few hundred people there. For my group, we would go and pay the boogie fee and make a couple jumps a day. It's hard for everyone to shell out extra cash on each jump when at home they are cheaper and still out of a turbine. We didn't mind paying the boogie/camping fee, etc because it helps pay for the party, which we enjoyed a lot. With a lot less people though, it felt less epic - just didn't make us want to make the effort to get all the way to IA with 3-4 RVs, a couple of cars, all the tents, etc. We're from Sky Knights, last year we were playing concerts and electronic music the whole time, year before that porn, etc. I was sorta the driving factor behind our group and with other non-skydiving trips and a desire to go to Summerfest, didn't have time to make the push for it. I also think that part of it is a lack of marketing for the boogie, it's hard to get info about it and it hasn't changed much. My boogie fee gets me a lot more at Summerfest and there are a lot more "turbine" people there to jump with. (It seems like couch was cessna jumper heavy and talent light when it comes to freeflying and wingsuiting, not that it's a bad thing necessarily). Summerfest this year was fun for me, but even that felt less epic this year because it didn't have all the world record buzz. It's hard to put on a good boogie, you have to mix things up, have some change and energy or today's jumper will get bored with it. The DJ at couch last year didn't even really have anyone hanging out, at Summerfest there must have been 100+ people around the Tikibar jamming out to Rook playing a great house set. It just speaks to a mindset. I guess that point that I am getting at is that for a boogie to grow and be awesome there has to be awesomeness and new hotness. Couchfreaks with 800+ people was epic, 300ish was kinda more like a relaxing weekend of camping. There has to be a draw, a reason to make the journey compared to what is available elsewhere. Someone mentioned the Cheese Boogie as being competition, that's my home DZ's boogie and I don't really agree. We don't have the capacity or camping or ability to have that kind of party. It's about as big as it can get already with the people that come. I think that the true competition is Summerfest, cause it's one of the biggest boogies left and has essentially unlimited camping room, great parties, a crapton of lift capacity and superior facilities. You can throw the dice on a calendar and hit a weekend with 2-3 boogies going on depending on where in the country you go and that doesn't help either. 12. I think your summary is pretty reasonable. I personally don't like the KA much at high wingloadings. I feel like it has all the "go fast" features of a velocity and none of the solidity and recovery features. It does open nice though. I think it's a good canopy at wingloadings that are less than I would want to be jumping a velocity at though. 13. Why would yo ask this? How is the Hobbs connected to the oil pressure switch or the E bus? Can yo do anything about this??? Why are yo asking us as compared with the rental aircraft owner? You have just held up a sign.... C I suggest you take this particular aspect of this question to the student pilot section on the AOPA site.... Not being sarchastic or nasty here, just ending a conversation that you can't do anything about...when renting aircraft.... In the long run it really dosn't matter, shopping for rentals based upon how the meter is connected isn't going to save any cash.... I asked because I'm thinking about renting out my 182 while I'm not using it over the winter and I was curious what others thought a fair rate would be.. And the Hobbs spins faster than the tach so it would make a difference in the rate. What was it about the question that got your panties all in a wad? Just make sure that you have a good contract that covers all the "what ifs" and who can fly the plane, etc. We rent our 182 out at $125 dry. It has an upgraded engine and wingtips but not extentions. It mostly gets rented to people doing other wierd stuff rather than dropzones cause we use it weekly for hop and pops. We had a film crew in it last week with a whole camera set up shooting another plane flying around through the open door. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 14. Perhaps forced sterilization or a 1 child policy. (Man, and people call ME comrade?) We'll I was thinking a little more along the lines of better educating people about the costs and consequences, not using taxes to incentivise reproduction, etc. As for the stuff about robots, well - yeah you got me there, cause robotics is quickly taking over lots of that kind of work. It makes me wonder about the future to come, I just hope I can manage to end up on the right side of the fence when this all takes a turn for the worse. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 16. I am not sure I would say never. I have mentioned this before I am sure - but I would rather see corporations taxed for choosing to use out of country labor than see citizens taxed to pay welfare because all the jobs are overseas. The whole system is set up in a way that intentionally screws the average joe. You must see the correlation there. I also think that we need to educate people better on the decision to have 1 child when you can't afford it let alone three. It's not your right to be a drag on society because you want to have children and I want to be able to pay for a child before I have one. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 17. Here's a quote from an article: The whole thing is talking about fast food workers wanting to make more money. I can understand the want to make more money, for sure. Who doesn't want more. The problem I have is expecting it out of a fast food job. The type of job that historically was held by teenagers who had no need to support themselves. I can agree with paying a manager or other type of leader a reasonable wage, because it should be the glue that holds together something ran by people who are basically unskilled. What I don't get is why someone who can't otherwise provide for themselves, decides to have 3 kids? That's the justification used for demanding more pay at a job the person shouldn't even be doing. It seems to me to just be another version of "we have to do this for the children" that gets trounced out anytime someone wants something. What about the children that are not able to get jobs to learn responsibility in high school cause adults are taking silly jobs that they should have moved past. I dunno - it all speaks to "too many people, not enough,.. resources/space/jobs/anything". There are far too many people and far too many people who don't know how to prioritize and take personal responsibility. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 19. Yeah man. It's hard to keep it all in perspective sometimes, but most of the problems that we have are very "first world" problems. Not to mention that in the skydiving world we already have so much more opportunity and awesomeness in our lives compared to a large majority of people. Sometimes I get caught up in things and have to settle myself down and remember that I shouldn't be taking things so seriously. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. 20. Biggest issue that he is likely up against is that without the ability to read and comprehend english a liability waiver is non-viable. If you're looking for her to do a tandem, try smaller cessna dzs maybe? Someone might be willing to take on the extra risk. We have taken deaf people because they can still read the waiver / watch the video and understand it, blind is harder but doable as well from a waiver standpoint. 22. How easy was it exactly for them to obtain the weapon? I wasn't able to find that information in the article. Also: People under the age of 18 aren't able to legally buy firearms (already a law). Adults who own firearms can be responsible for the actions of others if they make it too easy for the firearms to be absconded with (already a law). Murder is against the law (already). Theft is also already against the law. I mean, I feel like we have a lot of options for choosing to punish people here. I also don't believe not owning/having access to a gun would have made a very big difference in the long run. 24. I've never seen that order before. Do you know what the thinking is behind it? You can put the WS last.... But the temptation of the WS to use the students or tandems as swoop toys often gets too great. As long as the WS jumpers do not fly up the line of flight (and anyone flying a WS should be able to do that) there is no risk. I just want to throw out there, that there is no real way to stop that short of penalizing people for doing it. Actually, in my opinion, it makes it easier for me to swoop a tandem if you let me get out before them. Think about it this way - they are going to open at 5k then fly down. That process takes a few minutes at most. If I exit after the tandems I am going to freefall twice as long as they do unless I intentionally dive down after them. That gives the tandems a whole extra 50 seconds to get below an altitude that I am comfortable staying in wingsuit flight. If I get out before them, that actually brings the time between when they open and when I am going to be around that altitude down. As they freefall I will end up above them for the most part and they will be right there waiting for me. At least that's the way I would look at it. I personally don't have any desire to wingsuit swoop anyone that doesn't know it's coming. Edit to add: I also hate being that close to the airport. It makes for some squirrely shit going on with the pattern that we have to fly. ~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me.
