  1. My best friend's blood test shows no antibodies, 4 weeks after 2nd Moderna shot. Discouraging, but not surprising for someone with early stage plasma cell cancer. A small study of people with blood cancers showed only something like 13% had detectable antibodies 3 weeks after the 1st injection (Pfizer, if I recall correctly) -- normal people 97%. So, still masking, no restaurants or take-out, sanitizing all groceries, no travel, no friends inside.
  2. I cannot remember where I was seeing some comments on this -- maybe YouTube, maybe FB. Anyway, mostly about raising money for R's via WinRed contributions, but some commented on the default recurring payments. I suggested that they contribute instead on ActBlue, since it didn't do that. ;-)
  3. Interesting background on Gaetz' associate Joel Greenberg. It was the Greenberg investigation that broadened to include Gaetz.
  4. Use bleach. It works much faster and more reliably.
  5. The automatic filibuster always reminds me of the classic Star Trek episode, "A Taste of Armageddon." In that, the intrepid crew visits a planet where the inconveniences and destructiveness of war with a nearby foe have been replaced with a simulation, the results of which determine certain people to have been "killed" in a battle. Those people then report to disintegration chambers, where they are, well, disintegrated. The Enterprise upsets this system/treaty, so the adversaries actually have to start dealing with each other to avoid a real war.

    Cosmos

One of my wife's favorite flowers. I've never seen them in the wild, but have them in the garden here in northern California.
  9. Maybe he'll sue the Democratic Party too, for using his image as their mascot.
  10. Adjusting for population, and auto miles per capita, the German 2700 would be equivalent to 15,400 in the US -- still only 35% of the US rate.
  11. There were reports that people with more Neanderthal DNA are less susceptible to Covid 19.
  12. That is infant deaths per live birth. Adjusting for fertility rate gives ~5.7 infant deaths per 100,000 population.

  16. Alcohol shortly before or after the vaccination is thought to interfere with getting the best immune response. Shortly being days, not minutes.

  18. My brother had quite a reaction to his 2nd Moderna vaccine. Got chills that 4 blankets wouldn't fix. His legs muscles were spasmodically cramping, so that he had trouble walking or sleeping. I think he said that his heart rate was also high. Next day, he felt like someone had been beating his legs with a pool cue. A friend of his had similar, but less severe, reactions to his 2nd vaccine -- I think also Moderna. My brother's wife had essentially no reaction to either dose of Pfizer, nor did another friend (not sure which vaccine). These four folks are 68-75 years old. I decided that my wife and I will not get the 2nd dose on the same day, in case we both have reactions.
  19. More data that a single dose of vaccine gives excellent protection (Moderna and Pfizer–BioNTech both ~92% or so after two weeks), so that it would probably be best to delay 2nd shots in order to get more people the initial vaccination. https://www.nejm.org/doi/pdf/10.1056/NEJMc2036242?articleTools=true Not known how long the protection lasts without the booster shot (2nd dose), but the Israeli data seems to show at least 9 weeks - and that is all the data they have so far.
