You got that right, they certainly aren't graceful sailing craft! SmugMug

In the Americas Cup race they are prohibited from picking up crew. SmugMug

Looked like he flew thru final then made a turning midfield approach. Wouldn't be my first choice. SmugMug

Pilot ejected from small plane...w/o an ejection seat

Depends. Possible the canopy generates a bit of lift. Side doors usually pop open slightly. SmugMug -

Company website shows canopy hinged on right side. SmugMug -
Get a good CFI and go out on a windy, nasty, gusty day and do a bunch of pattern work. I rarely use less than full flaps (40 on my airplanes) even in stiff winds. Isn't really a problem once you get proficient. Nothing a couple thousand landings can't fix. ;) SmugMug

I guess it depends on the insurance. I had a neck surgery 2years ago that totaled a bit over $50K....only cost me a couple hundred out of pocket. Amazon, I feel your pain re the cardiac issues. Found out in 06 that I have Brugada syndrome. Was a stressful few weeks until the work up was done and doc said I'd be OK. SmugMug

How will you Celebrate International Talk Like a Pirate Day?
akjmpplt replied to Southern_Man's topic in The Bonfire
On me new pirate ship!! SmugMug -
That panel is too small with the yoke located there for me to believe its a 182. Yeah, I've only got around 1000 hours in one, what would I know. SmugMug
-
What is smaller than a 152? I think it's a 182...possible even a 200 series Cessna. Certainly is not a 152 with that type of door latch. SmugMug

Remind me never to fly in/out of Gulfpot-Biloxi...

But if involved in an aircraft midair the odds are more likely you will be at a controlled airport vs an uncontrolled airport. SmugMug -
If you found a bank bag full of money, would you return it to the bank?
akjmpplt replied to JohnRich's topic in The Bonfire
$23 million in a bag? Hmmm. In a former job I moved money -- $6 million in 20s, 50s and 100s filled 6 bags. That was one big friggen bag. SmugMug -
All's well that ends well - Paragliding 'incident'

Survive the landing to have you ass kicked by a pissed off raptor. SmugMug -
Any chance you meant B-17 and B-24? The Collings airplanes made a stop in Wrangel in 2002 when we brought the airplanes to Alaska. SmugMug
-
Naw, for that type of conversation I usually bring up flying the B-24.....or the B-17....at Quincy. SmugMug

You're friend was either confused or doesn't know what he's talking about. I've flown a Mustang, it is a trim tab. SmugMug
-
When you say "flutter" do you mean aerodynamic flutter? or just a fluttering sound as the trim tab came off? SmugMug
-
This happened to Bob Hannah flying Voodoo in '98. He lost the elevator trim tab, pitch up pulled 10G causing him to black out. Luckily for him he didn't roll and woke up at 9000' feet. Jimmy's head is low and forward probably because he is unconscious from the pitch up. The roll is probably just incidental. He was a decent guy. SmugMug

Any pilots here? I'm curious about this rare type of landing..
akjmpplt replied to CloudyHead's topic in The Bonfire
I'm not so sure the Fat Albert thing would be very useful in a threat area -- they were flying low and very slow straight in to the point where they started the dramatic descent -- would make a very nice target. The approaches I've seen and rode in involved a tight spiral over the airfield area. SmugMug -

I had a similar experience except when the driver went off the road again I recalled, ID'd myself as the original caller and told them they needed to stop the driver before someone gets hurt. I stayed on the phone and updated the drivers location as I followed (while obeying all traffic laws)..within a couple of miles patrol units caught up to us and stopped the driver. Dispatches get a lot of BS calls...they become a bit jaded/cynical and do not get exicted about things we might think are pretty exciting. Convince the call taker there is a true problem and you will quickly get help. SmugMug

I used to fly the B-24 and B-17 (made it to Quincy the last year) for the Collings Foundation. It was a special day when the veterans were onboard. SmugMug
