  1. Not including the cost of the packet from Strong, rig rental and the cost of jumps how much do tandem examiners charge for the conversion class. BTW I have over 200 vector jumps.
  2. I use TV (time value) or otherwise known as shutter speed. I set it for 1/500 sec and let the camera work out the aperture. If I am shooting film and it is getting close to sun set I will back of the shutter speed to 350. If i am shooting digital I will bump the asa up to 200 or 400.
  3. I did the same thing this last fall. I watched the Penn State / Iowa game, downed several beers while watching my beloved Lions choke again. Unfortunately there was a camera store right across from the bar. I took a look at the 20D and pulled out my credit card right after I beheld what five frames per second was all about. No regrets though the camera rocks!
  4. Im down with that! I saw a girl the other day with tiny "boy-shorts" panty lines and I to pause to catch my breath.
  5. Has anybody heard of these, or had any experience with them?

Credit cards are powerful medicine. Use too much and it can hurt you. On the other hand, you can use them to your advantage. Get a points card and run all of your monthly expenses through it, (food, gas, utilities, entertainment) pay it off in full every month, pay no interest, generate points, get a record of where your money goes via monthly statements, on-line tracking and year-end summaries. I have generated enough points for a flight to anywhere in the lower 48 in less than one year. Don't ever get into the "If I can afford the minimum monthly payment I can afford the purchase" mindset. This will kill you. If you got a 30-year mortgage for $200,000 and put $7,500 on a credit card at the same time and made minimum payments on both, your mortgage will be paid off well before your credit card. Even the interest rate is not so bad if you use your card correctly. For example: If you say to yourself (like I did this summer at the WFFC) "Is it worth the $35 of finance charges I will have to pay in order to buy this xaos-27 98 now, instead of in three months when I will be able to save up for it?" The answer to that question for me was yes. Guns don’t kill people. People do. Credit cards don’t ruin credit. People do. Credit card companies are no different that other companies, their sole purpose is to separate you from your money. It is up to you to not let them do it. Be a wise consumer. BTW in the interest of full discloser, I do work for a bank.

  8. I just got a 20D and have had no troubles with the 15mm sigma that I bought last year. BTW the 20D is wicked fast and has a huge buffer. It has a faster flash synch than the D10 and turns on instantly, (no more waiting for the camera to boot up).
  9. I like to skydive Tandems video money The summers too short
  10. The student asked me if I ever had anyone refuse to jump. I told her that is has only happened once...but since I only have 4 jumps I'm running about 25%. One on the other instructors asked my student if she was nervous. She replied that she wasn't. To that he said, "Do you realize that you are jumping with Hutch (me)." He repeated this several times during gear up and climb. When we were on jump run I asked her if she was nervous, she said no, and I said, "Do you realize your jumping with Hutch? Another thing we do is to have each instructor assure the other instructors student that they are jumping with the best instructor on the plane
  11. I jump a Xaos21 at 2.4. It opens better than any canopy I have ever jumped. It has loads of lift. (I recently did a demo and landed uphill and ended up about 6 feet higher than where I started my swoop) Having said that thought, I am loosing some weight to get my wing loading back down to 2.2, to give me more range and to help get back from those long tandem spots with out having to work so hard.
  12. A newbie that showed up the the DZ with a camera on his head and one of our staff members had the guy put on his camera helmet he then took a piece of supention line and whiped it around a snag point on the helmet and started pulling the guy around the packing area yelling "WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO? WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO?" The guy cut away and deployed his reserve before removing his helmet and ended up dying in this senearo.
  13. I took the test and ended up in the high risk category. I thought it was interesting that if I upsized from my current wingloading of 2.3 on a Xaos-21 to a new canopy, say a Xaos 27 with a wingloading of 2.1 (to be more conservative and safer), I would move from the high risk to the dangerous category because I would be jumping a new canopy.
  14. Develop your flying skills first. I had over 1500 jumps before I started flying camera. While I agree that most of the photography aspects can be learned on the ground by reading and talking to others, you cannot read about how to fly your body. If that were true I would have skipped those hours in the wind tunnel and the skills camps to curl up with a good book on 4 way. BTW, I have to take exception to the comment “By 500 jumps (hell, by 150) most jumpers have found their niche” How does being able to fly your body without thinking about it somehow create a distraction? When I shoot video all I think about is the shot I don’t have to think about how to get there. I agree that some, maybe even most skydivers do settle in to a favorite discipline, but they can change at any time. It just takes some humility. And the skills they have developed in the mean time can hardly be considered a distraction. That is one of the beauties of our sport.
  15. 4 shots in < 2 sec than about 1 shot per second there after. If you give it a few seconds between shots you could get another 4 shot burst for the opening sequence.
  16. Got mine yesterday! It is bigger than a regular rebel but not as big as a 10d. It takes 4 shots in less than 2 sec and clears the buffer quickly for follow up shots. Cant wait to slap it on top of my optic for this weekend!
  17. Does anyone have any advice on "going digital"? The dropzone where I work is all film. They charge $80 for edited vid+stills. The DZ provides the film, blank VCR tape and the editing equipment. I get $35 and do the editing myself. The stills are considered "complementary" and are not guaranteed. I assume I could charge a premium for being able to guarantee the stills. What advice can anyone give on adding a digital component to the video/photo concession? Specifically Pricing, workflow, printing stills, burning to CDs, and how much money, if any should the DZ get.
  18. What is the latest on the attempts that were to be made by Michel Fournier and Ms Sterns?
  19. Why would the write time on the 300D be any different than the 10D? It has the same sensor and the same processor.
