Hi folks,

From the link below:  Utah's 2022 law banning any books containing "pornographic or indecent" material. The statement calls the Bible "one of the most sex-ridden books around,"

A Utah school district has removed the Bible from middle and elementary schools : NPR

That explains why its so popular with republicans. So some light reading before: "Why Hookers Love Republicans / At the GOP Convention, where scores of sex pros gear up to party with "moral" conservatives" and after!

Does that mean that Utahans (sp?) are only allowed to read from the Book of Mormon?

Hah!

Hah!

Meanwhile:

Illinois becomes the first state in the U.S. to ban book bans

Citing a “vitriolic strain of white nationalism,” Gov. JB Pritzker signed the measure withholding state grant money from libraries if they ban books.

I'm looking at copies of Mein Kampf, The Koran, The Book of Mormon, et al. on my bookshelf, and don't recall being swayed by any of them.  If anything, while reading them my reaction was that anyone who bought into this dreck is FUBAR.  In general, anyone who takes much of any religious writing at face value has something severely wrong with them.

Reading the Greek Myths as historical artifacts is enlightening, the same goes for the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures.  Is any of it the Revealed Word of God (tm)?  I have to remind myself that the question is more than rhetorical; though the very idea that the prime mover of the universe would generate such badly written compilations of applied ignorance as the basis of communication with the denizens of this particular backwater speck of dirt is beyond absurd, it is frightening to consider that easily half of humanity buys into some variation of that concept.

I've read Plato, and he would have qualified for the ancient Greek version of NAMBLA.  I wasn't swayed by his discussion of the ideal version of True Love, but do not think banning his work is a good idea.

Much of what is subject to banning preys on the intellectual vulnerability to which our species is subject, but, as Ron White pointed out, you can't fix stupid.

I once had the ambition to read "Mein Kampf" and "Das Kapital"(Marx).

I got as far as buying a copy of "Das Kapital" and attempting to read it. I cannot recall ever reading anything as gawdawful boring. Unless I find myself in prison with nothing else to read, I doubt I will ever complete it.

So you've never read a transcript of a trump speech?

I have the same problem with Marx that I do with Ann Coulter, the lack of a volume knob.

I finished "The Communist Manifesto" but gave up on a Coulter book because of her penchant for screaming on paper.  Yeah, I get that you think badly of those that disagree with you, but let me come to the conclusion that they are poopyheads without you insisting that this is the case.

"Mein Kampf" is a truly awful read, which I suppose is a qualification of a religious screed.

I have both jumped with Winsor and given a joint presentation wth him on skydiving safety.

He's a pretty nice guy in person.  And smart.

Agreed.  I organized with him at WFFC for years.  The Internet can bring out the worst in people and give you a falsely negative sense of who they are.

The day starts and there is two lines of jumpers looking for loads to get on one goes to billvon and  one to Winsor.

Winsor starts listing the loads he has organized, his qualifications, the capabilities of each prospective A/C and its pilots.... Jumpers start to nod off....

billvon's 100 way three point load is landing and he starts to lay out the next jump.

Winsor, John and Billvon are all pretty smart but in that aforementioned order the Kenworth air horn goes off at 100 psi. Then it goes down to the Prius beep, beep.

Or, put another way, the internet can give you a chance to feel safe to show who you really are with the protection of distance and little social consequences. On the other hand those who know me well would probably agree that even in person I am a grouchy and only semi-socialized asshole who spouts off too much just like I am here.

Another example of the law of unintended consequences:  Mexican beer Modelo Especial recently dethroned Bud Light as the top-selling beer brand in the U.S.  I hope the bigots are happy with that.

Hi John,

This is the thing that always fascinates me.  These idiots cannot think forward more than about 30 seconds.

Those same sorts of people will gladly hurt themselves as long as it hurts other people more.

Also owned by the same parent company, AB InBev.

Although there is a US distribution company in the middle as it's not brewed in the US.

Boycott one product while supporting the same company. No wonder it's only about a 1% hit to the company worldwide.

American ignorance at it's finest.

Youtuber Justin King commented some time back about seeing a pickup truck with an anti-Disney bumper sticker, and a "Punisher" logo in the rear window. ("The Punisher" is a Marvel Comics character, and Marvel is owned by...Disney).
