To me as a layperson, the banana republics' bans seems to make some sense: they know they don't have first-class, or even second-class, medical infrastructures in their countries, so they've probably concluded that, patient-for-patient, someone with Ebola entering their country probably poses more of a public health hazard than the same person entering a First-World country. There was a well publicized event at the San Francisco zoo a few years ago when a few drunk idiots harassed the tigers and one demonstrated that the walls weren't tall enough, killed one and mauled the other two. Sadly, it was killed, and it killed the least offending of the 3. The other two got a pretty nice payout, but proceeded to litter the news with felony arrests every 12 months. The key is that there are a surprisingly large number of tigers in the US held in private collections or kept as pets. Anything to do with them (both in terms of attacks on people or substandard living conditions) would attract far less press attention than with zoo animals.Do you want to have an ideagasm? However, assuming we DON'T have to do something similar simply because we have first world facilities is also foolhardy. So the gun lobby tells us that "assault weapons" are so rarely used in crimes that we shouldn't worry about them. More Americans have been killed with "assault weapons" in the last 48 hours than have died of ebola in the USA in the last 2 months. By NRA logic, ebola is nothing to worry about....
