Russian legislators approve troop deployment in Ukraine

No. By international law, the embassy is US sovereign territory. Having US troops there wouldn't constitute and invasion.

although this is often repeated it is simply not true. A sort of urban legend of international law.

But the Russian troops are occupying a much larger area.

not true
As weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

Well, it is if we make the absolutely crazy assumption that the troops who are not wearing any insignia or identifying marks, but moving around in vehicles with Russian license plates are Russian.

And lets not forget they have been sent by Vladimir "The Butch" Tsar of all the Russias

Russia never left the Crimea.
You yet didn't understand this simple fact?

Stalinist Russia is alive and well there. As I said before. that was the brilliance of Comrade Joe... kill off as many of the ethnically NOT RUSSIANS ... and move in large numbers of ethnic Russians. Now Tsar Vlad can go into any of the former Soviet Republics to protect those ethnic Russians.... just like the german guy did in the Sudentenland to protect the ethnic Germans there.. PEACE in our time!!!!

What do you think Obama should have done?

Although many here would disagree I believe on the world stage it would generally be agreed that Putin has been played Obama, several times (call it what you will)

So in THIS case given the the fact that Putin has the belief that he has Obamas "number"

A comment such as "The U.S. will watch this situation very carefully"

Sure people here would say that Obama's comments were that of a pussy - but making comments and then NOT backing them up is worse that being precieved as a pussy - doing that PROVES you are.

This problem as created by Obamas past performance - hence my comment - there is nothing American can do at this moment.

America is NOT in a good moral position for casting ANY stones at anyone else .. They have slaughtered way too many innocents to have the right to say what ANYONE else does.

As for support.. there are so many brown nosed sycophants that support the yanks no matter what they do.

Personally I think the US just needs to butt out and let the Europeans see if they can work it out..

Police yourselves.. and if you can't... you can get a real taste of war.. now that the 100th anniversary of the Great War is rolling around rapidly.

New generation, most of the old generation that lived thru the last dustup in Europe are getting old and senile, the new generation perhaps need to learn the lessons all over again, think of it as a quick learning curve.

Oh by the way.. if you need some.. we have some really cool shit we can sell you. We have been testing things that are really good at blowing up Russian shit now for 60 + years.

On the plus side, this gives Russia the opportunity to recapture the "bad guy super power of the world" title.

They can have it. We've had it for too long now.

*********Doesn't matter. The President has made a statement that there will be consequences. So we're stuck.

Now we either do something and probably look bad. Or not do anything and look even worse.

Just like Bush with South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Basically there is nothing the US or its allies can do, just like there wasn't in 2008.

Russia has a veto at the UN. It supplies most of Europe with its natural gas. It also has plenty of natural resources. So embargo won't fly, and we certainly aren't going to invade Russia.

Not so Sir, I believe that our PM Mr Cameron has already raised an eyebrow at Mr Putin. Furthermore he is preparing to 'Tut' loudly at the UN (I hear he may even go as far as accompanied eye rolling). If that fails the USA and Uk combined will draw a line in the sand, and if Mr Putin has the temerity to cross it together we will be forced to draw another line in the sand. (Following which we will beg him not to cross it and if he does will he please not cut off our gas as we have sod all military left and no public appetite for any form of confrontation following a decade of vanity wars).

Putin surely deserves a good sound "tut-tutting", but eye-rolling is likely to escalate the situation.

Fair point, well made.

Mr Cameron should consider how to pay foreign debt.

Quite right Nelly, France is looking good, not to far off, better weather good tourism decent brie. Maybe we should invade them. I shall suggest it to him over tea and scones this afternoon.

Funny, I re-read the title thread to make sure what it said. I thought maybe it was "Russia invades, due to America's mistake"

It seems to me that no matter what happens some people here can turn anything and make it a discussion as to what America - and generally during Bush term - has done wrong.

Russia is invading another country. So many of you have stood on your soap box and condem America for the mistakes of this.

Where are the howl's at what Putin is doing?

Russian legislators approve troop deployment in Ukraine

MOSCOW -- Russia’s upper house of parliament unanimously approved a request by President Vladimir Putin to deploy armed forces on “the territory of Ukraine” to protect Russian military assets and Russian citizens living there.

Question: is there any legitimate reason the US should get involved?

30 years ago we'd be concerned with the spread of communism, but that's not an issue since Russia isn't communist now.

We'd also be concerned if Putin was a dictator, but regardless of his beating up some people against him, Russia as a whole seems to be doing quite well compared to before the wall fell.

I'm just not sure we have any moral grounds to stop him.

Morals have precious little to do with it.

Given the precedent we established in Kosovo, I suspect the 'secession' of Crimea is fait accompli.

It seems Putin is following Clinton's lead. He did, in fact, establish precedent here.

No need for blamestorming; incompetence in the Oval Office has no political persuasion.

No country is in a good moral position for casting stones. Most people who have done some living are not in a good moral position to cast stones.

That doesn't mean that you don't speak up when something happens you do not agree with.

With an occurance of this magnitude, silence would be the same as consent. I am sure Obama understands that Putin isn't going to listen, however something had to be said.

In the mean time, the threat of sanctions, combined with the possible cost of war caused the Ruble to tank. This caused the Russian Central Bank to take $10 billion out of their foreign reserves to stop the nose dive. It also forced them to dramatically increase their interest rates to stave of inflation.

Today Putin has announced the end of the war games on the border. Maybe just all a coincidence.

Depreciation of the ruble - a good sign for the Russian domestic market. Russia has abundant domestic resources. China has never sought to raise the yuan.
It is time to move to settlements of gold equivalent.
It is long past time to get rid of American IOUs.

The advice is sound that one should not attribute to conspiracy that which is easily explained by incompetence.

There are 535 Senators and Representatives in Congress.

How many of them are scientists or engineers by training?

Not very.

Spending years addressing technical fundamentals does not prepare one for dealing with the unwashed masses. It would take an intensive course of study to bring most people up to speed with the starting point of the conversation, so trying to sufficiently dumb down one's message is problematic.

In advertising, the rule of thumb is that, once you exceed an eighth-grade level, you have lost half your audience. This applies to capital expenditures, and equally so to political candidates.

I again state that our only inexhaustible resource is stupidity. Washington is proof of that.

Ding, ding....we have a winner. Back to Bush....so Bush fucked up - that makes it ok for Obama to fuck up?

Now instead of just blaming it on Bush, the idea is to defend Obama by saying Bush fucked up to so it's ok?
