For 7 cell I love my storm. For 9 I loved my pilot. I managed to have to chop both for various reasons all stemming from experiments in deployment techniques. . Along these lines it amazes me how many organizers try and build a formation ON line of flight without any turn. In my experience that just never works well. The last out are ahead and above the first out and have to do some crazy stuff to get down. Without the right skills and patience you end up with people doing a 180 here and there. The base needs to set a turn off line of flight to give everyone the easiest path to get there. Floaters are already in the correct place to turn with the base and dives just dive forward, no need for them to get down AND back. I think the most important formation lesson I learned when I started was the leader\base puts a turn in. Until that point we had been trying to build on line of flight at our home DZ...DOH! I gave 3 good reasons in my original post. i) Performance. It is a lot easier to size a suit perfectly by taking it in instead of trying to add to it. If you build it a little big you have material to play with, as you know rarely will 2 suits be sewn identically and some are not even cut identically. ii) Resale. If I get a suit made a little big then it can be unpicked later to fit larger folks. Did this with my R-Bird as the buyer has a bit more of a beer belly than me. iii) Winter Weight. This is where YOU have me confused, because a few posts later you claim Winter Weight is one of the reasons Phoenix Fly cannot always deliver a suit that fits. If you have a couple of inches around the belly that can be taken in you can adjust for winter\age weight. My original post prompted an educated PM to me about the Swift being baggy not around the waist\belly but in the arms. My comments wouldn't help one bit in that case. I am talking more around the mid section and the back of the legs. It isn't very easy to take a suit in for height issues or design differences. It is worth noting that most suits can be tailored to fit like a glove. I get mine made a little big and then get them taken in so that I am snug as a bug. Makes a HUGE difference! The other benefit is you can remove the stitching later and that helps resale. Even another benefit is a little breathing room for that winter weight if needed. tony has a few back fly suits in the works. One is the R2B2 which is rock solid from the back fly bases I have followed. Not sure if that will be its production name. I think all of it is summed up in Mistake #1 which you already identified. Thanks for sharing. A swooper that finished the season on a super small elliptical would be very wise to start the following season on an upsized canopy and with a nice conservative plan. The incidents forum is full of examples of people starting the season too excited. The good guys of course don't take a season off but they sure do upsize when coming back from an injury induced rest. Same goes for wingsuiting, simple as that. If you are not current you pick a suit and plan that is appropriate. You already figured that out but I think it is something great to share this time of year as people are getting back into the groove. As others have pointed out some other stuff went wrong but a smaller suit would have minimized all of the other issues. You might not have felt so anxious in a smaller suit and wouldn't have rushed the exit. This is a subject close to my heart because I took the winter off due to personal reasons. I come at this as a pilot, you must do instability recovery as part of that training. Sure it helps you identify that you are about to go into a spin but you sure can't beat being able to keep a cool head and recover from multiple rotations. Being able to understand inputs does you no good at all when you are slammed mid air and need to recover or get kicked on exit. I for one will continue to keep instability recovery as part of my coaching. Agreed, instability is FUN, when you have altitude on your side and clear skies. My 2c. Regardless of how you get unstable you should experience instability and recovery before you feel you can "upsize". I did some coached jumps for the BPA WS2 stamp and that required instability out of the door with on heading recovery. Cant beat an exit and then opening a single arm wing for that. It does't seem to do any harm when applied to a new suit but scotch guard really comes into it's own when applied to an old and tired suit, brings it back to life. Right at jump 200 I did a couple of jumps on a Prodigy. Then I upgraded to a Firebird while waiting for my P2. Right around jump 50 I switched to an R Bird which I flew for well over 300 flights. Then I moved to an S Bird as my main suit. Since then I have flown many prototype suits including the Scorpion but I still keep my S. First, I don't think suits like this are for flocking. If you have one of these in your wardrobe you most likely have a suit better suited for flocking. Second, I can't see how they are more dangerous than cameras sticking out...and then there are the flying 170+lbs bodies that cause the real damage! Dangerous?
