  1. It's because you know it's there and your brain will keep track of that fact. You will try (consciously or subconsciously) try to frame the best shot and that _can_ make you loose your altitude awareness. It's not like every person with less than 200 jumps that straps on a camera dies. It's just much more likely something will go wrong if you do it too soon. I understand the need for conformity. Without a concise set of rules to follow we would probably all have to resort to common sense. -David Thorne
  2. I got to see backfly and sitfly. I didn't buy the videos, but saw them at a friends. I watched them while I was just learning to freefly and was going to a tunnel in few days. I thought the videos were really good and they helped me a lot to understand how things work and why they work the way they do. I recommend these videos to anyone learning to freefly. Not selling them to you, just my opinion I understand the need for conformity. Without a concise set of rules to follow we would probably all have to resort to common sense. -David Thorne
  3. I turned away from the monitor few times while watching these guys fly... some really scary stuff. Keep pushing the limits!!! (and try to stay alive...) I understand the need for conformity. 4. I got my airplane ticket!! I will be landing in Atlanta Intl. on march 5. (friday) at 20:30. I have to be back at the airport on march 15. (monday) before 19:00. Can some one from The Farm come and pick me up? I understand the need for conformity. Without a concise set of rules to follow we would probably all have to resort to common sense. -David Thorne
  5. We just had the same discusison the other day. There is a rigger in my area that charges around 200 EUR for cypress 4yrs check, and then there's this other much less vocal rigger who will do it for 150 EUR IIRC. Someone charging 50 EUR to pack and ship a package should be hanged by the balls... Twice for 100 USD I understand the need for conformity. Without a concise set of rules to follow we would probably all have to resort to common sense. -David Thorne
  6. You could try and download demo of Jumptrack and try to update your unit, but I don't know if demo version will do that or not. I understand the need for conformity. Without a concise set of rules to follow we would probably all have to resort to common sense. -David Thorne
  7. Call or email DZ for place to stay. Last year they hooked us up with a really nice guy with a really nice house near the DZ (about 30min walk so still in driving range, no one walks in US), much cheaper than the hotel and we had a kitchen, couple of bathrooms, etc. We used airport taxi to get us from LAX to Perris, but that might not have been such a good idea. You will need a car there so I'd suggest renting one. Public transport in US is virtually non-existent outside of big cities. You _could_ manage without the car, but you'd have to walk a bit to get to store (for supplies) and back, to get to DZ and back (unless you sleep in IHOP or bunkhouse)... 8. Since this thread seems to have a lot of locals in it I have few more question for you: I was looking at rental cars yesterday and they seemed really expensive for the 10 day period (or maybe I'm just too cheap). Would I really need my own car there? I don't plan to do any travelling, sightseeing and other stuff people do on vacations, so the only thing I need the car would be to get me from ATL airport to DZ and back and to get some supplies while at STF. So I was thinking alternatives and the first one was airport taxi. How much would they charge me for a ride from ATL to STF? And how much would be a taxi from STF to nearest grocery store and back? Last but not least, is it reasonable to expect to meet friendly skydivers (with cars) that will drive me around (for few beers and a fee to cover the gas and some more beer )? EDIT: If renting a car is the way to go, could someone explain the insurance system in US? Is any insurance included in base price? Are there legal requirements what insurance I must have to drive there? Which of the optional insurances (Loss damage waiver, Supplemental liability, etc.) is good thing to have and where to get them from (rent place or other insurance company)? 9. I was under impression that the otter will not be at the farm on those dates, so I chose to come either before or after, but definitely not during. EDIT: Besides I'm not coming there (just) to drink, I'm actually planing on learning a thing or two (about skydiving mainly). The dates are almost set so I started looking for a place to sleep (and by sleep I mean sleep). I looked at local hotels and they either get bad reviews on teh internetz or are quite expensive. Since I managed quite well at few bunkhouses so far I guessed that if I get more of "clean" and "quiet" responses bunkhouse shouldn't be a problem at The farm. I understand the need for conformity. 10. I should be coming to the farm at the beginning of march and stay there for 7-10 days. Currently it looks like I'll be departing around 5th and returning around 16th. I know about the St. Paddys thing from 17th to 21st so I'm trying to be there before the whole thing. I'm coming from Slovenia (Europe). I understand the need for conformity. 11. Well I wasn't looking for a silk sheets with mint chocolate placed on pillow every day when hot french maid cleans it I am more concerned about wildlife and bugs in rooms :) or birds nesting in there (like at some other DZ bunkhouse). I understand the need for conformity. Without a concise set of rules to follow we would probably all have to resort to common sense. -David Thorne
  12. Are they good? Bad? Clean? Loud? Safe(ish)? I'm planing a trip there in few weeks and will need a place to stay. I understand the need for conformity. Without a concise set of rules to follow we would probably all have to resort to common sense. -David Thorne
  13. just bumping this baby up the forums a bit... Anyone got more info on larger optimums? I have this strange feeling we will not see them for a very very long time I understand the need for conformity. Without a concise set of rules to follow we would probably all have to resort to common sense. -David Thorne
  14. DSE (at least I think it was him) posted video of CX100 and CX520 side-by-side, doing freeflying and all. _I_ could not see any shaking (claimed to appear in freeflying with OIS cameras) in either CX100 or CX520, and I tried really hard to spot it. Colors on the other hand looked much better (again, that was _my_ subjective observation), bit warmer. I would still very much like to see "freefly shake" on a CX520 footage. The fact I haven't been able to find video showing the shake _might_ indicate that this model is actualy OK for skydiving and that OIS is getting better and better at being turned off during skydive I understand the need for conformity. 15. I somehow get a feeling that this wingsuit judging criteria is being forced too early. Like Sebastian said other disciplines took decades of practise before record formations were attempted. It could very well be the case that wingsuiters in general have mad skillz and years of practise are not needed in this case, but just for the sake of continuity lets stick with more classical approach to skydiving record formations. However that does not exclude judging criteria for non-docked formations, it's just that the ones that are proposed now are kinda weird... They seem to be there just to justify current "records" (they are big achievements but not official record IMO) and not to allow wingsuiting to become equivalent to other skydiving disciplines. It might be line of 6 docked today and group of 20 in few years, but like it is said many times on this forum: this is not a race and you don't have to be world champion by the time you're 20 (or is that just babel to keep us n00bs safer?). 16. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare.asp Put in your criteria and pick your favourite! I understand the need for conformity. Without a concise set of rules to follow we would probably all have to resort to common sense. -David Thorne
  17. dpreview.com says that rebels can do about 3 fps in bursts, while G11 can only do 1.1 fps. While one picture every second is not slow, it's still 3 times slower than cheap SLRs. Also the autofocus is aparently much slower on G series compared to SLRs. On the other hand G11 is smaller, lighter and takes pictures just fine. I guess it all comes down to what _you_ need. 18. You could also add tutorials from Lynda.com and VTC.com, but they are not free. I understand the need for conformity. Without a concise set of rules to follow we would probably all have to resort to common sense. -David Thorne
  19. I think CX100/105 can already smooth slow record for 3 or 4 seconds, playback in really smooth. I understand the need for conformity. Without a concise set of rules to follow we would probably all have to resort to common sense. -David Thorne
  20. I would also like to get the CD with directions for building one... if anyone has info on where to get one please PM me! I understand the need for conformity. Without a concise set of rules to follow we would probably all have to resort to common sense. -David Thorne
  21. So how about those vids? In meantime, if anyone has an example of OIS shake (and not helmet shaking or bad mounting) pls link it!! I understand the need for conformity. Without a concise set of rules to follow we would probably all have to resort to common sense. -David Thorne
  22. You could always try one of the open source programs (some times they're not as good as the ones you pay for but for an average video editor they should offer all you need). You can find a list of them here. I understand the need for conformity. Without a concise set of rules to follow we would probably all have to resort to common sense. -David Thorne
  23. Generally speaking you want as less as possible extra glass in front of your primary lens (the one that limits the resolution). Every single thing you put in front will degrade image a bit (although with high quality wide angle lens no one can spot the difference, but it's there), so stacking them up there might not be the best idea. But as always: If you already have both put them on and look at the footage. If you (and whoever you're filming for) can't spot the difference then you're good to go :) I understand the need for conformity. Without a concise set of rules to follow we would probably all have to resort to common sense. -David Thorne
  24. Do they list their resellers somewhere? The only resellers I found near me were 50% more expensive than the listed price. My guess is that capitalistic mechanism of supply and demand is working as intended in this case... High demand, limited supply. I understand the need for conformity.
