  1. I used to jump there regularly. Very nice people and great views, but sometimes they are so busy with tandems its tough to get on a load. I usually jump at Perris or Elsinore becasue they are closer to where I'm living now. Plus they don't have to worry about the marine layer the way Santa Barbara does. 2. It doesn't bother me Yes, I prefer to edit for specifiicitityness.
  3. There's nothing wrong with wanting to get some knowledge before starting your class. NWFlyer pointed you in a very good direction to gain a lot of that knowledge. The problem with learning things from this site is that you might learn things differently than how your instructors teach it and that could lead to problems. My suggestion is to read the SIM. If there's still more that you want to know, take a case of beer to the dz at the end of the day and listen to the stories of the experienced jumpers. You'll learn a lot and make a bunch of new friends. "I fly because it releases my mind from the tyranny of petty things." - Antoine de Saint-Exupery
  4. Relax. A little bit of fear is good. It keeps you focused. The key is to not let it have too much power over you. I think its a good sign that you have some doubts. It shows that you understand that there are risks and that you respect those risks. "I fly because it releases my mind from the tyranny of petty things." - Antoine de Saint-Exupery
  5. It doesn't look like the most comfortable cabin, but it would only be for short amount of times. He said that its only cost effective up to about a 1000 mile distance, so the duration of each trip wouldn't be that long. 7. Enjoy a couple solos and being out there on your own. Then do some coach jumps. A coach that jumps with you can give you advice on what to work on. Jumping with somone at your skill level (when you first get your A) can be fun, but it will not help you progress very quickly. Chances are that you will be chasing each other around the sky and not really improving your skills. If your dz has load organizers, jump with them. They will be a much more reliable reference point and will be able to teach you a lot about skydiving, And definitely take a canopy course. Learn how to fly your canopy safely early on and you wont develop bad habits that you have to unlearn later. Plus its a lot of fun learning how to fly your canopy better. 8. Last year I bought a Panasonic DMC-TS20 waterproof point and shoot camera. It had been working great until a few weeks ago when it stopped powering on. I made sure that the battery was charged, but nothing happens when I try to power it on. I've contacted Panasonic customer support and they told me to send it in for servicing. Since its out of warranty (by two months), they will charge me more to fix it than I originally paid for it. Does anyone have any experience with cameras doing this? Is there something I can do to fix it myself or is it a lost cause? "I fly because it releases my mind from the tyranny of petty things." - Antoine de Saint-Exupery
  9. I used to jump a Mamba, but now use a Cookie G3. I think that the visibility on the G3 is a lot better. "I fly because it releases my mind from the tyranny of petty things." - Antoine de Saint-Exupery
  10. I had a scary accident when I had under 100 jumps. I came very close to breaking my back but got extremely lucky and walked away with some bruises and sore muscles. I was back in the air two days later. I recognized the series of bad decisions I made that led to my accident and what I needed to do to avoid repeating it. Then I felt like I needed to get back in the air before the fear dug itself in. That's not the right thing to do for everyone and it might not even be right for me if something happens again, but it was what I needed to do that time. 11. I use a full face helmet because I do a lot of RW. Its all about personal preference. Some like full face helmets and some don't. I don't think that they're good for students because they do cut down on your peripheral vision. "I fly because it releases my mind from the tyranny of petty things." - Antoine de Saint-Exupery
  12. Staying relaxed will help you breath easy during freefall. Visualize the whole skydive on the ride to altitude and take some slow, deep breaths before exit to help calm yourself. Freefall is a very different environment than most people are used to and its normal to be a little stressed out, but calming yourself right before you jump often helps you stay calm while you jump. And talk to your instructors before buying any gear. They might not want you using anything other than what they provide. 13. It is a very rare event, but it's still a very real possibility. Jumpers go hundreds or even thousands of jumps without a malfunction, but they still practice EPs so they are ready if it does happen. I see hop and pops in the same light. 14. Yeah - Boxer briefs, the wind sock doesn't need to be flopping around. It keeps getting all tangled up. Same goes for me. Just boxers. "I fly because it releases my mind from the tyranny of petty things." - Antoine de Saint-Exupery
  15. At this point you shouldn't worry about the smallest main that you could fit into a container. Look for gear that's the proper size for you right now. You might decide later that you do not want to keep downsizing to smaller canopies. A lot of skydivers find a canopy size that they are happy with and stay there even when they have the skill and experience to downsize. You should also look for something larger than a 170. Your wingloading is based on your exit weight, not your body weight. And the most important piece of advice I can give you is to talk to your instructors before taking anyone's advice on the internet. 17. I think your problem is that you're only jumping once a month. I get a little extra nervous before my first jump after not jumping for a month or so. The best way to learn and progress is to stay current and one jump a month is usually not enough to do that. You might want to consider taking a couple months off until you can save up enough to do more than one jump a month. Or learn to pack and try to make some extra money at the dz doing that. If you do decide to keep making one jump a month, the key to relaxing is to breath. Visualize the jump on the ride to altitude and before exit, take some slow, deep breaths to help you relax. 20. That's not something to take lightly. If you're still dependent on your parents, financially or otherwise, you might want to wait until you can live completely independent of them. I don't know your parents or how serious they are about that, but if you're planning to go to college and expect their help paying for, maybe you should stay on the ground for now. And $1000 is not enough to get yourself through AFF. Especially if you have to pay rent and other bills. 24. There's a reason that you keep hearing that you need to relax. It works. But we know that its not really that easy to command yourself to relax. DSE makes an excellent point about focusing on your breathing instead of trying to force yourself to relax. Before exit, try taking a few slow, deep breaths. Calm your mind and your body will follow suit. I know this from experience. I had a lot of trouble relaxing and then I was told to breath and it worked wonders. You've had successful jumps and done well in the tunnel. You've even successfully dealt with a malfunction. Id' say that as long as you're enjoying yourself, skydiving is for you. 25. I have a Mirage and am very happy with. My recommendations is that, if possible, you demo each one and see which is more comfortable for you. If you aren't able to demo them, at least try to find ones that you can try on. You might find that you like one more than the other.
