  1. Wrong again. Reserve parachutes are classified as the only "life-saving device" in your rig. That's why a certified rigger has to inspect and pack it. Your main parachute is not considered life-saving by the FAA, and that's why (basically) anyone can pack it. Try reading the FARs sometime. You might learn something.
  2. Your profile still says SDC so I was thinking it was only about halfway across the country... Irrelevant. Fight Night is worth flying from anywhere.
  3. 1. Good parachute. 2. Check heading and clear airspace. 3. Turn off camera. 4. Stow slider. 5. Toggles I want to be under something safe and flying in the right direction before I start fiddling around with other things.
  4. I use Jumptrack, L&B's software. You also need to buy the USB adaptor to get data off. I wear the strap on my middle finger. The altimeter sits flatter that way.
  5. For the sake of comparisons, PD is comparing a Sabre 2 to a Spectre, not any other manufacturer's canopy (safire 1, fusion, pilot). Looks like we're in agreement otherwise.
  6. Where does it say that? I replied to docpop and dragons post. The reason i wrote it is because what docpop wrote does not add up with my expirience, and as i can see not with dragons either. Maybe you should go bark on the one that missquoted PD instead, if that is the case So now you're wrong twice. The quotes from PD are correct. The conditions of similar weight loading and weather conditions apply and were noted above. The Spectre has a flat glide angle and does float. I have 175 jumps on my 210 loaded 1.1 and will confirm the flight characteristics. The only issue is getting back from long spots, but flying in half brakes usually gets me home. Otherwise, it's easy to land in alternative spaces.
  7. Increased capacity? It's nice to have a boogie at an awesome location, but not when it's sold out before you even announce it.
  8. change the video privacy settings http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=219103581434133
  9. I really just want to punch him in his fake genital sack. There's a million ways to accomplish the same "awesome shot" that doesn't endanger everyone else. If only these douchenozzles would post their license number so everyone else knows when they show up on X dropzone.
  10. A few weeks ago Rachel Ray came up to the Ranch to do her second tandem. Here's the video from her show today: http://www.rachaelrayshow.com/show/segments/view/rach-bert-conqueror-go-skydiving/ Her production assistants were there before the Ranch opened at 8am, doing whatever PAs do for a few hours before she arrived. She showed at 1pm, did an hour of filming and then took one of our two pilots up for her and her three friends. Unfortunately, she did NOT make us lunch. That would have been nice. But still, good press for the community, and Ms. Ray and staff had a good time.
  11. Thanks for asking. Now I went to look and found that I my insurance company pays 100% after a $100 deductible for ground and aerial transport, in and out of network. SWEET!
  12. It just amazes me that you could spend 20 minutes in a plane with other jumpers and NOT talk about landing direction. We talk about it before getting on the plane. We talk about it before jump run. If the winds are shifty, someone steps up and makes a decision and the load sticks to it, even if we all end up doing downwinders. Step up people. It's your own ass on the line. Consensus isn't that hard to find. Talk. COMMUNICATE. And if you want me to come to your dropzone and call out landing directions for $1 a jumper per load, let me know. I'd be happy to take your money for being as responsible as everyone else should be.
  13. I kind of figured this would be the case. I am going down to the DZ this upcoming weekend since they have some "safety day" thing, to hang out and have some fun. I will also ask about the AFF stuff. This really sucks, esp since I am such an "on the go" person. I hate being laid low by anything. Just because you can't jump doesn't mean that you can't learn a lot of things that will help your skydiving career. Safety Day is the annual refresher that USPA dropzones conduct after a long winter of no/slow jumping. It'll be similar to the class portion of your FJC. So, other things you can do while not jumping? Learn to pack. Practice that a lot. Learn all about your gear and how it goes together and comes apart. Learn landing patterns, reading wind charts and planning your approach, even if you're not in the air. Watch other students land while next to the radio guy and see what they do right and wrong. Lots to learn, even if you can't jump.
  14. Like save YOUR ass? Are you looking for contributions so you don't hurt yourself again?
  15. Unless you have money coming out of your ears, there's no reason to buy a G2 yet. Get a Protec that costs 1/4th the price and where you won't care about the inevitable scratches you put into it as you learn how to skydive. As for goggles, just go to the pro-shop and buy a pair of clear plastic goggles. Make sure they fit tightly and you won't have to worry about contacts. Skip sunglasses for a while.
  16. I hate to break it to you, but we ALL go south to places where it's warm. And most of us have jobs, or school and a job. We save our money, then throw it out of a plane repeatedly. This isn't rocket surgery!
  17. Read the SIM. Buy the IRM and read that too. Go to the DZ and ask someone to give you a packing class. Go south where it might be warmer and jump. Edit: Go jump in the cold weather. Do 26 hop and pops. It's the best way to learn. Do a canopy course. Get video you can review. You've been on these boards fro two years. If you're digested anything, you should know all of the above.
  18. Meh. You can give yourself bad packing habits without feedback as well. Better to practice a pack job once, then take it to someone who knows what they are doing and unfurl it in front of them. That way you can check for potential problems. Then go home and pack for a week, then get some more feedback. Watching youtube videos to help you land is a stupid idea. Not all of us have as many issues under lightly loaded student canopies as shah does.
  19. Did you even look up skydiving on Hawaii? According to your profile, you don't have the jump requirements. Unless you want to go do a tandem.
  20. That too. Either way, it doesn't reflect well on the staff or the management of the business.
  21. +1 ^^^ Telling the public that "We are a drug-free dropzone" makes people worry about it for every other dropzone where they don't say that. Ignorance is bliss, and advertising drug testing is a stupid idea.
  22. I use this rule of thumb. If I can't remember how I was feeling and how my last pack job went, I repack it. Wait....no. I just jump it. It WANTS to open.
