120?? I wonder how many rafts ever get going that fast? The one we did yesterday, my Protrack showed an average of 97 for the first half of the jump (I stayed with the raft the whole time). Even from "just" that though, a 60+ mph decelleration is still a large enough difference to cause a lot of damage!!! Lineover that I couldn't clear. My first thought after I was under the reserve was "well, the gear and I both worked as we were supposed to" ... followed closely by "dammit ... There is also a sign at SDH manifest stating (close as I can remember, at least) ... Dogs welcome. Children must be on a leash. My personal experience after 10 years around dzs is that overall, dogs cause fewer problems than kids. Most jumpers seem to have their dogs trained to be safe around gear. I can't remember the exact wording, but when I first started it was put to me something like this: If you are a person who reacts quickly and can make correct decisions under stress in a timely manner, then you are likely going to be fine starting with AFF. If you are generally not fast to react, or are the type to get flustered for even a little while when in a tight spot, then it's probably best to start with the tandem progression. I went straight to AFF and was fine, but I recognize that it's not the best route for everyone. I think you have to be able to either do a realistic evaluation of yourself, or get someone who knows you well to help with it to make the determination via this method. As stated by others, you are throwing yourself into what amounts to a foreign environment, which tends to have different effects on different types of people. Preface to say that I am not totally decided one way or the other on this, but that I use bags that I take with me to the grocery, and I take any plastic grocery bags needed back to the store (they have a recycle bin for them outside). They are now making some plastic bags that DO break down over time ... not all plastics are created equal. I haven't read anything that I remember as to what is produced in the process. You also failed to mention the enviromental costs of the petroleum industy which is necessary to create those plastic bags. Yes, it'll still be going on due to fuel needs, but still .... and BP has done a lot to harm the rep of the oil industry for the foreseeable future. As for the water aspect, I know of no places that are commercially viable logging areas that rely on irrigation. The rain is going to fall there whether trees exist in a given location or not, and they DO help hold soil in place when not clear cut. Those trees help both the land itself by reducing the runoff rate so more can soak into the soil, and also benefits any nearby streams by reducing silt runoff, not to mention the CO2 being absorbed by those trees. Petroleum processing uses water too, though I think some are now on closed systems. I have no clue what the volumes are comparing one process to the other, but that might be interesting to see! If it takes charging people a little to get them to do what is right, so be it. The bags like I have cost little, and last a long time (the first one, I bought about 5 years ago is still going strong). If a higher percentage of people would use them it would go a long way toward reducing the plastic bag/paper bag issues. I vote for the candidate I think will do the best job, regardless of party. To me, anyone who always votes a straight party ticket is nuts. Nobody will ever convince me that every single candidate from any party are always better then all of their opponents. Primaries ... here (Texas) you aren't tied to a primary based on party, but can vote in any primary (only one though!).
