  1. yep ... most certainly was ... ... and a huge THANKS!!! I'm firing off an email to Madolyn, and will report back. As long as you are happy with yourself ... who cares what the rest of the world thinks?
  2. ok ... I've heard a number of people mention that they'd like to get these going again over the past couple of years. I'm finally getting to a point where I could take part too, so I'm now joining those who would like to see them up and going again ... LOL!!! SOOOOO .... what's it going to take to make it happen?? 1) Find someone with the contacts, pull, and drive to MAKE it happen (how about it Chuck?). 2) Contact Madolyn to be sure the name can be used without repercussion. 3) Pick a place and date, and get started (I'm sure we could talk TB into hosting)!! 4) ????? I think it's an "if you build it they will come" deal ... I'll pitch in wherever I can ... just let me know ... :) Who all is interested? As long as you are happy with yourself ... who cares what the rest of the world thinks?
  3. Still lots of fun to watch, but you have to admit, the photog folks don't get as much to work with ... ;) ... !!! I think it speaks well of groundwork laid by the organizer too, not JUST the competitors. From the noncompetitors ... thanks for a job well done Dave! 4. Did a search and didn't find anything on this, so if it's been covered please point me to the thread! Due to another thread, I got to wondering what is typical ... 1) On your dz, do instructors try to verify that the person they want to be talking to on radio IS the person they are speaking to? 2) If so, what method is used (kicking, turn on command, etc)? thanks! Big News!

Congratulations!! First child??? ... As long as you are happy with yourself ... who cares what the rest of the world thinks?
  6. I've stated before, and still do feel that with most of it for most people, the "kinder, gentler" is the way to go (always exceptions!) ... and I think that for the biggest part, people DO use it when possible. Ask how to do a certain exit or fly a specific slot, and that is probably what you'll get. BUT, when it comes to safety issues, that goes out the door. As has been stated, you can seriously injure or kill not only yourself, but those around you. Most people take that threat pretty seriously, so when safety is part of the subject matter, yes ... it can get pretty hardcore to be sure it sinks in and leaves no doubt about the gravity of the issue. I like Bill's post ... good illustration! As long as you are happy with yourself ... who cares what the rest of the world thinks?
  7. That goes the other way quite well also ... I think some people are too lazy to use the search function and read what others have already said about a given subject, but instead expect people to reiterate just for their benefit! If someone already bothered to share their knowledge and experience, why do you think them lazy because they don't care to retype it just for you, when their original thoughts are easily available to read if you weren't too lazy to do so? ... ;) ... To use your teacher analogy, a good teacher ... once he/she has taught something might very well tell a student to do some research, then come back if they still don't understand. 8. lightweight beanpole here ... sub-100 belly flying, but never downloaded Protrack data to see lowest #, or tried to really just cup hard for a whole jump to see what I could get it to read for an entire jump. 9. Jump #'s and time in sport are not the beat all/end all indication of knowledge in the sport, but they're a very good start in that direction. Any time you start into a new endeavor, do you seek education and advice from others also relatively new to that, or from people who have a lot of experience doing whatever it may be? It's not an obsession, it's more like an acknowledgement. As long as you are happy with yourself ... who cares what the rest of the world thinks?
  10. I think that part of that demeanor also results from the tendancy of some to ignore either the search function, or the results it provides to them, such that they end up trying to rehash something that has already been discussed half to death. Then, on top of that, in spite of their lack of time and jumps compared to many they seem to often elect to support a view against prevailing thought on the given subject in spite of the knowledge and consideration applied to it by people with many more jumps and years in the sport. That behavior repeated over and over can tend to make some people's responses a bit terse!!! edit to add ... I don't think anyone wants to dampen the enthusiasm of newer jumpers, nor does it have anything to do with that. Some of the lessons learned by those "old jumpers" came at the expense of themselves or their friends, and they do not want others to get injured or worse relearning those lessons. 11. I'm sure no rigger, but based on what you said here, I'm guessing that what you mentioned about uneven pressure is exactly what is happening. If it's so loose that you can end up hanging unevenly in the harness, that would (at least to me!) explain how it could begin to open ok and on heading, then go to heck on you as the slider is descending. Coming out of the container, it's ok until it opens enough to stand you up and begins to put your full weight on the leg straps, and that is when the uneven pressure occurs. I am with the "get video" post .... should be pretty revealing I'd bet. I'll be really interested to hear what corrects the problem for you!! 12. The ones sold in the outlet malls with all the other irregular goods, of course! As long as you are happy with yourself ... who cares what the rest of the world thinks?
  13. hmmm ... I'd have thought that with your on the job training, you'd now be able to sleep anywhere ... ;) ... See ya next sunday ... about the same time as last go 'round ok? As long as you are happy with yourself ... who cares what the rest of the world thinks?
  14. To me, it is just spin once again. The law as passed uses the word "require" ... and the court is putting a hold on that, but the court did not prohibit them from doing so, only placed a hold on requiring them to do so! It will be interesting to see how AZ law enforcement handles it. As long as you are happy with yourself ... who cares what the rest of the world thinks?
  15. Unlike Dave, I didn't grow up there, but have had grandparents, and later my own parents living in Sherman area so have spent a lot of time up there. I camp a pretty good deal, and backpack ... and I live in Texas. I would NOT want to camp up there this time of year. If you get cool nights, it might not be TOO bad, but you are just as likely to have overnight lows above 80, and that makes it pretty hard to get a decent sleep. I'm with those who suggest looking into a motel or other arrangements that offer some a/c!! That said, I don't agree with a prior post about humidity. I live in Houston, and we have serious humidity down here near the coast. Up that way, the humidity is not nearly as much a problem unless you are just used to very dry air. 16. Try it up high ... I learned in a Scott Miller class when he had us intentionally stall. If you get your canopy into a full stall and then let up on the toggles very quickly, it tends to surge rather quickly into a dive for a little bit before it settles out again. I wonder if a partial collapse from turbulence could cause the same behavior as the canopy regains it's form? As long as you are happy with yourself ... who cares what the rest of the world thinks?
  17. Thanks! I was in between the license/#'s there, so it didn't have any effect on me. I guess it just went right past me! I knew there had been a change, but for some reason I was thinking it took place before I started. As long as you are happy with yourself ... who cares what the rest of the world thinks?
  18. I get confused at times, admittedly ... LOL ... but I started in 2000 ... and I've not seen any license jump # requirement changes in that time. Your profile stuff says you've been in the sport 10 years, same as me ... I'm curious as to what it is that you hear has changed? 19. umm if I counted to 6000 even if I started counting from exit I would have much bigger problems then not having a working Altimeter.... I think the intent there was "one thousand, two thousand, three thousand ... etc." ... as a timing mechanism As long as you are happy with yourself ... who cares what the rest of the world thinks?
  20. Height DOES help ... you can see over people to watch video during a crowded debrief ...
  21. It's been discussed many times since the recent AZ law passage. States are not supposed to be enforcing federal immigration law. I believe what was written (cut&paste from above) I believe you are wrong on two accounts. It wan't Gov Perry, nor was it "Asking for federal assistance". It was asking that the feds do their jobs and enforce immigration laws. Stuff like this is one reason I don't get in SC too often ... you obviously didn't bother to actually read my post. I said I wonder if he ran it BY Perry ... didn't say Perry made the request. And from my viewpoint, if you're asking the feds to do something, that IS asking for federal assistance. Whether or not it is something they should already be doing or not is irrelevant. As long as you are happy with yourself ... who cares what the rest of the world thinks?
  22. that 10 minute bit was/is in areas with concentrations of xylene, benzene and/or other chemicals that are dangerous to breathe for any period of time. These occur naturally in some crude, and have been found to be present in the oil from this mess. As long as you are happy with yourself ... who cares what the rest of the world thinks?
  23. I have to wonder if he discussed this with "thumb our nose at federal dollars" Perry before he sent the letter ... LOL!!! Asking for federal assistance seems way out of line with our esteemed Gov's policies. As long as you are happy with yourself ... who cares what the rest of the world thinks?
  24. Good?? ... dunno about that. It'll be big allright, but with that much wind it will also be a washing machine. As long as you are happy with yourself ... who cares what the rest of the world thinks?
  25. That is the wrong way to do it. It's possible to get kill line wrapped around some of the canopy when you cock after bagging. You say you weren't seeing the color in the window the old way? I bet you were cocking it past the colored part is all. Cock it completely, then color it with your own marker. For years I jumped rigs with no cocking window. You just made sure you did it when you packed, and double checked it as you packed. BTW, I cock mine after I lay the canopy down, as I'm preparing the bag right before S-folding. I would cock it and see color, pack, and find that it had moved and I had to recock it to get the color back. Mine is also an RI with the enclosed kill line. Even with that, I am careful as I put it in the bag to keep it unencumbered. I think it is less likely to snag fabric than an exposed kill line, but I AM a bit anal ... LOL!! Is it really a problem even with the enclosed kill line setups? As long as you are happy with yourself ... who cares what the rest of the world thinks?
