    Doctor Who

I liked Christopher Eccelston better than Tennant. Started watching the Doctor back in the day when it was shown on PBS. Tom Baker was the Doctor then. Glad to see it back again over here. It can be cheesy sometimes, but it's always entertaining.
  2. I'm still working my way through AFF, but the question I have on this subject- Shouldn't the design of the canopy in question be part of the decision? I would think that two canopies of equal size say, a 190 Stiletto v a 190 Navigator would have grossly different flight characteristics. So while it might be safe to downsize to a 190 Nav, a similar sized Stil or Katana would be dangerous.
  3. If you're already running synthetic, stay with it. If you've been running dino, and are thinking of switching, you might have problems with leaks where there weren't any before. Key is to change regularly and stick with what's recommended viscosity wise. AVOID Quaker State of any type. Every engine I've torn down that had been run with QS had major sludge buildup.
  4. For my remodelling and repair work, I recently bought the Wagner Paint Crew. It's an airless sprayer with a 2 gal capacity. I've shot decks and exterior walls with it and run both latex and oil based through it. So far, I've been pretty happy with the unit. It also has a roller attachment, but I haven't tried it yet. The unit works best when the paint has Flotrol in it. The only real difference between it and the pro units is the paint capacity. Pro units can be set into a 5 gal bucket. I also have a compressor with HVLP and conventional spray guns. I wouldn't even think of using them to paint a house. If you're careful, there is very little overspray, just keep the gun moving while you're shooting paint.

    !@#Termites!@#

I've done the method I described, but that was a long time ago and codes change. I just checked in with the local inspector. He tells me that the codes changed about 04 and don't allow for it. Current code is to sister an entire joist alongside the old one. He also said that the method I described was the one commonly in use until the code change and he saw nothing wrong with it. In additional comments, he added that there were builders trying to get the code changed to allow that method again and it was through regulatory snafu that it was deleted in the latest edition. Upshot is, the inspector basically said, use the method I've described and am familar with. Keep the project broken into segments under $1k and less than 12 feet and no permit would be required, hence no inspection problems with the building codes. I also went over this with a licensed home inspector who recommended this method as well.

    !@#Termites!@#

Ok, a buddy has termite damage in his crawl space to the rim joist, sill plate and the ends of about 10 joists. The outer wall in this area is brick venier and we'd rather not tear it off as it's pretty substantial. We're debating on the best way to repair this. Current thought- support floor joists and repair about 6-8 feet of the rim joist and sill plate at a time. Then, cut off the affected wood on the supported joists and scab in new, support the joint of the scab with a 4x8 beam on piers. Would this pass inspection or will we have to completely replace each joist? I would think that the scabbed joists would be fine if the joint were supported. From a labor standpoint, it would be much easier this way. Any carpenters/inspectors/engineers out there have a comment on this plan?
  7. Did the jump simulator at an Armed Forces Day exhibition back in the early 60's, never got it totally out of my head. Had to be responsible for a while. Now the kids are either off at college or out of the house, which way to the dz?
  8. And everybody thought Hitler and Tojo were just regular guys too.
  9. Enjoy the new handgun and revel in your newfound notariety As for fun shooting, not much in the organized shooting sports can equal 3 Gun for excitement. Basically it's a combat style match shot from multiple positions at multiple targets at multiple ranges with one, two or all three weapons on a given course of fire and you will be moving and shooting against the clock. No two matches are ever alike. Some matches have an "attack of the zombies" flavor. Others are based on military situations, some are based on possible civilian type encounters. Think skydiving is expensive? Try 3 Gun. Travel expenses, match fees and ammo can add up in a very big hurry. Typical ammo load out for a match- 300+ handgun rounds, 300+ rifle rounds, 100-400 shotgun shells, a significant portion of which will be mandated to be slugs. Cost of a competitive set of firearms will be $4-7k easily. Suddenly a rig and a $20 jump ticket aren't so bad after all.
  10. Ditto on the ridge/soffit vent combo. It can be very effective without consuming power. Powered vents are a bandaid approach to poor planning and construction and should only be considered as a last resort.
  11. The voices in my head have spoken- all your base are belong to us!!!!
  12. The school of natural selection has some very harsh tests.
  13. I have a bullet lodged in L5 with scar tissue pressing on nerves in the area. The actual dive isn't any problem, I have more problems with doing dirt dives than the actual dive. In a dirt dive, I have to use the back muscles to simulate the arch and it is rather.. uhhm, uncomfortable to put it mildly. In the actual dive, the air pressure on my body means I can arch easier than on the ground. Read the muscles aren't involved and not pressing on the scar tissue around the nerves. No problems with openings, granted, I haven't had any hard openings yet.
  14. Are you wanting to mount the ammo on the rail or receiver? There's a very nice setup for the receiver made specifically for 3 gun competition that's quite fast. It has 5 on the receiver and two mounted on the forward part of the receiver.
  15. My only complaint with the 1911 GI replicas are the sights. I would absolutely change the factory sights on most handguns. The ones that I most prefer- Heinie Straight 8, followed by Heinie rear with Dawson fiber optic front. The ParaOrd trigger will take some getting used to, similar to a Glock. It's DAO, and if you're used to the single action of a 1911, it will take some getting used to. Other than that, they make some decent stuff.
  16. How do you load an AR-15 if the magazine is non-removable? How do you clear a jam in the magazine? Non removeable mag rifles are loaded one round at a time through the top. DSA makes a CA only AR as do others. The idea is to limit firepower by restricting the option to use 30rd mags that can be easily changed out when empty. As for clearing it, well that can get rather interesting.
  17. I've used a Springfield for quite a while. It's had probably 100k rounds through it, one KB, and a couple barrels. Not a bad record for a GI replica. It has now started to have problems though. I moved from it over to a Glock 21C because of arthritis in my hands made the 1911 controls problematic at times. I wouldn't hesitate on another GI replica from Springfield if I were to go 1911 again. Para Ord makes a good piece. I have no direct experience with Auto Ord, but my second hand observations would rate it a distant third to Spfld or Para. Before writing off Glocks, go down to a range and try one of the small 45acp models. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
  18. Back on topic---- Be careful what you get. Hi cap mags marked for LEO can land you in more trouble than you would want to deal with. Past that, about your only option is to move if you want what most of the country can legally have. On the long gun thing, the restrictive laws in the state have pretty much done away with any form of legal combat competition when compared to the rest of the country. A competitor from CA with a rifle that's legal in his state will get clobbered out of state because his gun only holds 10 while the rest of the field is 20+. Take a match sponsored in CA and you won't have many out of state competitors for the same reasons. The laws out there on firearms are silly to say the least.
  19. Ok, compare the laws on firearms and social issues currently in place (welfare nanny state etc) in PRKA, with countries in the former communist bloc, then we can discuss this on an even field.
  20. If you think the handgun laws are screwy, long guns with detachable mags are verboten now. All "assault" type of weapons now must have non-removable mags and be limited to 10 rounds. Who wants an AR or AK where you can't remove the mags and can only hold 10 shots? Add to that the ban on the 50cal, never mind that it hasn't been used in 1!!! crime in PRKA. For really great fun, trip on over to Berkely or SF and I de double dog dare you to drive through the neighborhoods of the tolerant folks on the left coast with a republican bumper sticker on your car. People think the KKK was intolerant, try being a conservative in SF.
  21. Yup, beautiful state, interesting "immigrant" crossing signs down near SD. Uncle lives near Fresno. Best friend from long time back lives in LA. Any more sarcastic questions?
  22. Welcome to the People's Republik of Kalifornia. Just start poking around further and you'll find even more stupid stuff.
  23. Simple solution to a bad school, abolish the NEA union. Bad teachers could be fired. Past that, the only choice for many is to change schools. That's very cost prohibitive for most parents in the troubled systems. Vouchers would be the only way to allow them to get their kids to a good education. One note on the voucher thing, parents who avail themselves of it for their kids are paying attention to what's going on at the school and are determined to make sure the kids get a good education.
  24. It is interesting to note that among the 90+ US Atts fired by Clinton, were some investigating governmental wrong doing in Arkansas. I wonder where those investigations, had they been completed, would have led. Spectacular double standard on the part of the left.
  25. Why is it that the anti gunners are so interested in expanding the nanny state when using the "accident" argument. The same logic could be applied to automobiles, look how many are killed or injured each day from cars? Next let's look at skydiving, how many get injured doing that? To say that guns are only used in "criminal" or "terminal" types of engagements is totally false. There are lots of shooting sports where firearms are used safely. Skeet, Trap, Target, IPSC, USPSA, NRA Smallbore, Biathalon just to name a few. It boils down to personal responsibility. If you're not man/woman enough to take the lumps for your own decisions, don't expect the gov to bail you out. I think the another issue is a deep psychological need on the part of the antis to control others and an unarmed populace is easily controlled.
