  1. Let's view this in skydiving terms.- Canopy X- 125ft is dangerous- it should be banned, people have been killed under it. Canopy Y- 150ft is similar to X, it should be highly restricted to only licensed pilots who pay an exhorbitant fee to fedgod for the privilege. Canopy Z- 320ft safe for all (how much swooping you gonna do with that!?!) BASE/Wingsuit- all highly dangerous- total ban. Would you be willing to sit still for that? It all boils down to personal liberty and personal responsibility for your own actions. There is NO constitutional right to jump out of airplanes or off fixed objects, there IS one about owning firearms. As much as I object to skydiving being tightly regulated by the feds along the gun control model, imagine how much more I object to infringing on the 2nd. I like my freedom very much, socialist control freaks need not even try to take it away. Now let's look at Law Enforcement (no offense meant to cops). LE is an ex post facto proposition by nature. They do not arrest someone on the basis they "might" commit a crime. Why should my gun ownership be treated that way? Cops show up after the fact, take a report, hopefully catch the perp. Are you willing to bet your life, limb and property on the off chance a cop will show up at the exact moment a perp is doing his thing? Here's some interesting info- http://flyservers.registerfly.com/members5/policecrime.com/policeprotection.html Don't even think for a moment the cops can protect you from the crooks. They're not legally obligated to respond to any 911 call within any time frame. Finally, think you're safe from the cops?? http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id=6476 It's a dangerous world out there, I prefer to be armed.
  2. Ok, first off- JERROD- I RESENT your comment and croc tears. I am intelligent enough to be able to determine the difference between a threat and non threat. The key is situational awareness. The ONE time I wasn't carrying, I got hammered. Since that time, I've only had to draw down on a person ONCE and he was smart enough to realize his mistaken aggression and back off. The guy who shot me was a career criminal and another law wasn't going to bother him much. BTW, the gun he used on me was stolen. I have a friend who has had to use deadly force to protect a life. The perp was a whacked out doper with a long, long record, but always managed to skate on technicalities. Exams in the Darwin school can be severe. Without a weapon at the ready (a military surplus one at that) an innocent person would be dead and others wounded by the doper. The entire logic these Brady maggots are using is specious at best and outright deceiving for the most part. Many, many of our sporting calibers started life as military rounds. Most of those I listed started that way. If we started banning mil rounds, that would include the 45LC, 45.70, 7x57, 308, 45ACP, 9mm, 380 (9mm Kurz ring a bell?), and the list goes on and on. These clowns are after nothing less than banning guns from law abiding people when the 2nd makes no distinction between "civilian" and "military". Here's a novel thought and a bang up way to handle violent criminals- Enforce what laws we have already Put the crooks in jail with mandatory sentences- this means NO PAROLE. What part of this do libs not understand?? Many crooks are careerists. Don't let them out when libs whine and cry (can't do the time? don't do the crime!) insure the victim's rights come first!!!! Make prison a very unpleasant place, in the middle of a desert in a pink tent with pbj for food and only water to drink comes to mind. No AC, CTV, or other luxuries. Hard labor comes to mind. A few final comments, the crook who shot me was sentenced to 40 years, in part because he was also conviced of other offenses. This guy served only 12 years. The good part of this, he was arrested in FL, extradited to NC, served NC time, then extradited back to FL for having 25lbs of pot in the stolen car. He served a further 10 for that. He was out on parole as of last June when he was caught again selling crack. How do I know all this stuff? My wife has lived in fear of this guy coming back so I've kept track of him. All you libs out there remember this, a crime affects more people than the victim. The victim will live with the effects for the rest of his life, I am reminded daily. Prone dirt dives are literally painful because of this. Arching on the ground in AFF is painful because of this. I have learned ways around it, but why should I have to change my life because of a crook with no respect for persons or property? More gun laws won't stop criminals from commiting crimes, locking the sobs up will.
  3. Better read that lib diatribe a bit closer wonton, they even mentioned the 30.30, a round that isn't used in any machinegun. It's a hunting round designed for the old lever Winchester 94. By their own definition, hunting rifles shouldn't have telescopic sights. That would effectively eliminate most hunting rifles of any caliber, military or not. ALSO FYI, most rounds powerful enough for normal hunting purposes will also defeat most LEO body armor (without being designed as AP) so if these retards get their way, you'll be lucky to be allowed to keep one of those evil pellet rifles. By their definition overly powerful rifles would include- 223- aka 5.56 243, 270 308- aka 7.62NATO 3030 3006 7x57 and those are just the common ones. As far as the 2nd goes, there is NO clause about "hunting" or "sporting" calibers and uses. To construe such is to engage in revisionist liberal doctrine to assert control over the masses. Furthermore, if I want to own a M2, what is it to you? I'm not a criminal nor have a mental disorder. So long as I'm not shooting up the neighborhood, what's it to you? Lastly, I HAVE BEEN victimized by violent criminals. I was a victim of a carjacking and was shot 5 times and left for dead. Where were the cops when I NEEDED them? As a result, I'm still carrying 3 slugs in my carcass, one is lodged in L5 in an inoperable location and causes neurological problems. If I want a gun to protect myself since the cops are an ex post facto force, I'm going to have one, regardless of your opinion on the matter.
  4. The severity of the problem wasn't evident from the article. Generally speaking, ear infections aren't an emergency. Untreated, they can have serious complications. My niece had one that didn't get treated for a while and she's nearly completely deaf as a result. The doc was still a jerk for not helping the kid, mom's tats or not.
  5. IF the guy is really a Christian, he should have treated the child. The mother could have been given a smock or something to cover her tats while the child was treated if the tats were really offensive. A couple of things here- yes, he is within AMA guides about this, ear infections aren't emergencies. yes- he does have the right to refuse treatment based on the mom's tats because the child is a minor and the mom is the legal rep in this case. no- it was not the right thing to do. The child was suffering and needed treatment. It's another case of the fringe of Christianity giving the rest of us a bad name. If I was the doc, I'd certainly have treated the child. Christ was all about caring for children.
  6. Watch the stern of the ship and see how much the ship was pitching.
  7. I'd avoid doing it by just calories. Lifting weights puts on muscle and being more dense than fat, adds more weight without the side effects of getting fat. Past that, a weight belt perhaps?
  8. Some great stuff in this thread. What I've learned over the years is that no one plan fits everbody, you have to try stuff until you find something that works and is healthy. Back when I used to commute nearly 2hrs each way to work, my weight shot up to about 215, I'm 6'1 and normally about 185-90. Those 20lbs left me feeling horrible much of the time. It took changing diet and activity levels to get it under control. I started back playing soccer 3-5 days per week and not eating junk and the weight rapidly fell back to normal levels and I felt much better. One observation, as we age, our metabolism and body chemistry changes as well. If I tried to keep up eating with my mid 20's sons, I'd be at 300+ in no time. They like to poke fun at the old man for eating only till he's satisfied, but I don't have a problem with being overweight. If anything, I have the opposite problem now. Since I quit playing and referee soccer for extra income (read jump funds!! now), I've found that I lose weight during the season at what some consider an unhealthy pace, like 20+lbs in under 2 months. I'm saying this as a bit of a cautionary tale, I've found that towards the end of the season, I started having borderline sycope problems. Symptoms are severe lack of energy, possible fainting. It was like running a marathon and literally hitting a wall. After some experimenting, I traced it back to vitamin/mineral deficiency and I altered my diet a bit to compensate and the problem, while not going away entirely was greatly reduced till I gained some weight back over Christmas. Your body needs a certain level of fat for proper metabolism. Upshot is, your body is always changing, pay attention to it. It's easier to maintain health than gain it back. The belly is one of the hardest areas to deal with, gym time, diet and crunches can work wonders.
  9. I really think about potential brain injury to what little brain I have (after all, I like jumping out of airplanes ) Reason being, I have a close relative that suffered a closed head injury. Looking at him, if I had to choose between a fashion statement or a wheelchair, well, I can't get too much further down the dorky scale according to my daughter. Sure beats drooling in a wheelchair long before I turn 80.
  10. I've been thinking about the time to purchase gear as well. Here's a noob perspective on this. For what it costs to rent gear until I hit 100 jumps, I could put some more cash out and purchase a decent rig that a)fits my carcass b)has no unknown history (heat, storage, stuff spilled on it) c)is correctly sized for at least one downsize without any mix/match d)is gear that I will not have to unlearn any muscle memory to adapt to a newer rig e)get a canopy (main/res) with lots of jumps I've been watching the used gear classifieds, here and elsewhere. To see a used rig with the size main I'd like to fly coupled with a container/harness that fits me doesn't happen often. I'm 6'1 and 190. Most used gear I've seen is sized for shorter/lighter people. Most vendors I've spoken with are willing to work a package deal on a complete new rig that offers substantial savings over purchasing separately. For the moment, that's what I think I'm going to do. I only have to decide the actual wl to size the first main.
  11. I don't want to stir up a firestorm here, but as a noob, I have a couple of helmet questions. First off, I'm very familiar with the Snell and DOT ratings. I can see how CF would be very desirable for those applications as well as a skydiving brainbucket. Second, I really like the idea of full face coverage be it for protection in a RW gone amiss or something a bit worse like a tail strike. I know these are somewhat rare to rare, but all it takes is one pop to the noggin and you might be toasted. Which brings me to the questions. Is there any system to rate the impact resistance, etc of any skydiving helmet? So far, it seems that everybody goes on what looks cool or what somebody likes, a over b. How do the closure systems differ on the face shields? One more reliable than another? What about the chin straps? One brand better than another? Sorry for the noob questions, but I really, really, don't like the basic Protec.

    Surf's Up . . .

I guess you guys have never been fishin either?
  13. John- Sounds like a DCM match. As an interesting aside, my younger son decided to play with a Glock on the rifle section of a match. Targets were 8x10 steel starting at 60yds, spaced at unequal distance and heights out to 200. With the Glock, he put 5 on steel on each target, each successive target was about 15yds further out. He didn't miss until 115yds and that was still 4 out of 5, all shot offhand. back to the issue, I strongly resent being told how many and what kind of guns I can own by fedgod. So long as I'm a lawabiding citizen, the 2nd has no clause about what or how many. The only reason of circumscribing this is the insecurity of the liberals pantywaists of either party, not to mention those who would like to control every facet of individual liberty.
  14. You left out- "Don't care about rednecks going nowhere fast"
  15. Done it many times. I have to say though, in travelling the country in a previous job, I only saw that done in the south.
  16. 88 shots John? Must be IDPA I'd hate to have a tax on the round counts I was doing in 3gun. Typical match would expend about 250 handgun, 200 rifle and 150 shotgun, and those were fun little club matches. Start to shoot in the bigs and that could get real expensive, real fast.
  17. My youngest son gave me a gift cert for AFF this Chrismas. He's already gotten his jump wings from the USAF in Colorado Spr. Little did this kid realize that the old man always has wanted to try skydiving and he just triggered a new addiction. I have no problems with family jumping, so long as they do it voluntarily. My daughter won't even ride in an airplane unless there is no other way. My wife has no interest in jumping. She's mainly concerned that I get employed again with ins before breaking something while outside playing.
  18. Mainstream sources or not, the point is that the locals are trespassing on constitutional territory.
  19. Looks like I'll be employed again soon as well. Time to deal with some of the problems that piled up and get back to working on that A!!! Also, soccer season starts back up too. Calling club and high school matches pay decent and tournaments are great icing on the cake. Possibly a rig by summer?
  20. What about people who cast their own bullets? Bootlegging all over again?
  21. This guy is just another example of the luny left. I'd bet he was hanging with Hanoi Jane at the last march. Big Kudos to those who serve in any branch. Both of my sons are USAF. Oldest enlisted on 9/11. His younger brother will commission in a couple months and from there on to flight school. Both serve out of a sense of duty to the country that allows freedom to all. Both are Eagle Scouts from that dreaded paramilitary neocon bootcamp, the BSA. And for the libs out there, they're both devout Christians as well. Far too many kids live off of the fat of the land, taking freedom for granted and never gain a sense of what it takes to ensure that freedom that allows them to be what I L Lenin called the "useful idiots."
  22. Ditto, I'm having the same issues with port forwarding and a normal router. My ISP uses dynamic IP as well. I'd like to get this solved so I can get back to downloading Top Gear
  23. I don't see any problem with it. They're being considerate of the local homeowner's association by not doing additions that would clash with the architecture of the existing structures, thereby lowering property values.
  24. Make them Italian. They'll surrender at the first shot, go home, make great food, fast cars and finally have a fashion sense past a rag on the head.
  25. In response, ask to see the cabbie's green card and hand him a note with a phone number to the INS
