  1. In a word- yes The thing is to acclimate the horse to the sounds gradually. I've been in numerous Civil War reenactments with cavalry units present and the horses didn't spook from the owners firing, the troop firing or from the artillery. There are plenty of eyewitness accounts from cavalry actions to back this up. The mag article was bunk.
  2. I know it happened, you weren't there and your comment is offensive. This guy had to have counseling after the event and those costs weren't covered by anybody but his own wallet. How do I know you exist? For all I know you are no more than an automated response. I take your reply for exactly what it's worth, zilch. It is a fact that not everything makes the news.
  3. A personal friend of mine saved his neighbor's life by armed intervention. The perp was hit 5 times, 4 shots supposed to be instantly fatal, but he still ran over a hundred yards before he realized his life ended a ways back. DA didn't even question it, the perp had a very long rap sheet and was wired on drugs at the time. BTW, nothing about this incident made it into the news.
  4. Being a contractor I can say this, I get work correcting the crappy work done by some of the illegals. I'm not advocating they stay to insure a steady stream of work for me, rather, the cost of correcting the garbage done by these clowns far offsets any savings in the first place. Better to pay a bit more and get it right the first time. Besides, what part of "illegal" doesn't sink in with folks? Would you hire an escaped burglar, armed robber, or murderer to do work? They're "illegals" too and just want to make some money to support their families. Face it, illegal means illegal, deport them, don't hire them, don't make their illegal presence in this country any easier. Hopefully the message will sink in back in their own countries that we don't want illegals.
  5. If the EC was abolished, it would mean that only CA and NY basically run the country and dictate who gets into office. The current EC elected government is about representative concepts. I think the FF got this one right on the money.
  6. Empty nest here. The youngest two are still in their "what the heck do parents know" stage. The oldest is starting to realize the old guys may be a bit further up the curve than he thought. Reality baths can be quite the experience.
  7. If they banned it, what's Barney Frank to do for entertainment in his bedroom? More seriously, I've found that all kids have different personalities (duh!). What works on one kid for discipline isn't necessarily effective on another. On my three, the oldest was fairly normal, maybe two spankings total. My second, a hardened criminal, impervious to all forms of corporal punishment, video game deprivation was much more effective. On my third, no spankings were ever needed, she was quite the daddy's girl and all it took was a stern lecture. What I'm saying is that a total ban is an dumb idea, but at the same time, spankings don't always work. You have to be on your parenting toes to figure the game out.
  8. I used to shoot a .577 Enfield. The best cleaning method I've ever found- very hot soapy water. Be sure to run an oily patch down the barrel after it dries.
  9. they have to use the internet to communicate. Once they used secret messages on paper but after a couple of operations blown, they found having to eat the message was ineffective since it usually reappeared in a hairball. dogs have owners, cats have staff
  10. they work, but they're a PITA to use. When disassembling milsurp, the best method I've found is to use a single stage press, leave the dies off, mount the round on the ram and extend the ram. Grab the bullet with vise grips and lower the ram. Works every time. There is a bullet puller made by RCBS that would work. We weren't interested in saving the commie bullets as they were highly irregular in weight and had some variance in dia as well. The powder charges were not uniform, hence we dumped the powder and remeasured it. Group sizes were cut by almost half in a Mosin, so it does work.
  11. If you're into milsurp eastblock rifles, the ammo supply for the Mosin Nagants and their ilk is usually circa 1950 manufacture. My sons both have Mosins and shoot Hungarian milsurp through them. So far, no misfires. We did experiment with making some hillbilly match ammo. We pulled the bullets from 100 rounds, dumped the powder into a measure, remetered the powder and put back a modern manufacture civilian bullet. You'd be amazed at how much that tightens up the groups for no more than the cost of just the bullet.
  12. ....... no proof..... never happened. More seriously, back when I donated often (poor college student days), I only donated at places that were looking for specific serological products. The lab I went to was specifically looking for Rh neg females, B+ males (me!), and some other stuff from AB types. They paid about double what the average plasma lab did back in the 70's.
  13. Some folks just can't do the plasma thing. My brother had a similar experience. Drink plenty of fluids and take it easy.
  14. In the majority of cases, a free flowing intake will result in slightly higher mpg, BUT, if it's making a really cool sound with more throttle input, expect any gains to go away. Personally, I'd stick with a stock system with a K&N filter on a daily driver.
  15. Jez pop de cole air intak on da tang wid a fart can mufzler drop it dowwn wid sum spinnerz on de dubs an yo be da schnizzle. yo More seriously, a CAI may help a bit on the mileage, assuming you can keep your foot out of it, but don't expect any huge gains. The K&N will help costwise by avoiding multiple air filter replacements. There's one thing the ricers have yet to grasp, FnF was a MMMOOOVIIIE. Going fast costs cubic dollars, what you got in your wallet?
  16. Upshot of the article- your best defense is yourself, don't rely on the cops for anything past speed traps and doughnuts.
  17. For home defense, whatever is at hand, MKII, baseball bat, meat cleaver, lacrosse stick. If you plan ahead, there is no substitute for bullet diameter, mass and velocity. In shotgun terms, 20ga min, 12ga ok, 10ga oh yeah. If you're thinking handgun, 9mm is about the lowest I would consider. If all you have is that MKII, better plan on emptying it and have a bat handy.
  18. Heinie makes some great aftermarket sights. I'm partial to the straight 8

    Car Question

Ditto on checking your timing belt service. If that lets go, it will get very expensive very quickly. As for the squealing, it's likely the serpentine belt. It's easy to replace and probably costs about $30. Even if you're not a mechanic, you can do this job and save some bucks. Over time the belt gets a glaze on it that will slip when it gets cold or damp.
  20. here's a couple of web addresses to get edumacated on this- http://www.usdoj.gov/crt/voting/nvra/activ_nvra.htm http://www.cato.org/testimony/ct-js031401.html http://www.vdare.com/awall/voter_registration.htm http://www.cato.org/testimony/ct-js031401.html http://www.fdle.state.fl.us/publications/voter_fraud.asp The whole thing is a very bad idea from start to finish with extremely loose standards of proof to register. The honor system just won't cut it.
  21. Bushies are decent, but somewhat overpriced. RR makes a good rifle. I prefer these guys- www.DPMSinc.com because they actively support competition shooting. They have a great custom department for setting up a rifle just how you want it from barrel weight and twist to types of compensators. All reputable companies have options lists pages long and there is a huge aftermarket for stuff. It really comes down to who you're more comfortable with. A couple of things to seriously consider, DPMS and others sell anti-walk pins for the AR. Shoot an AR for an extended time and you'll find the pins the trigger assembly rides on tend to walk out. Also think about a Cooley comp and a trigger by McCormick or JP. As for the mags offer, go to a local gun show, mags for the AR platform are extremely common in several capacities.
  22. Since I'm pretty much a small operation as contractors go, I know for a fact that I don't have any illegals working for me. The subs I use don't have any either. I won't knowingly use any either directly or indirectly as part of my business policy. The people whom I do work for know I make it a point to not hire the illegals and they have absolutely no problem with it and don't mind supporting a little guy who's playing entirely by the rules. Back to the DL thing, it's basically the honor system when the illegal goes to get a DL with respect to registering to vote. The person is here illegally already, what's one more lie to get the "green" light for voting? Even in a hotbed of liberalism like NY, the populace is overwhelmingly against the DL idea to the tune of 70+%. That makes it neither a liberal nor conservative or democrat or repub issue.
  23. The really sick part of handing DLs to the illegals is this-- many states have "motor voter" laws, so, give the illegal a DL, and presto, a new voter. Just where in the Constitution does it guarantee a non-citizen the right to vote in a US election?
  24. Survival can depend on a number of different factors. Some folks die from 0 feet, others die on step ladders, still other survive multistory falls from roofs. I think part of it has to do with your physical condition at the time and how you impact. Back when I was extremely active climbing rocks, I took an 80 foot ground fall. I was climbing sans rope on an easy route, slipped and mean ole mr gravity took over. Cost me a week in the hospital and surgery. Now I willingly jump out of airplanes.
  25. it'll make finding ammo a bit more diffucult
