For me the thing that set it in motion was transferring from a private religious school to the local public school in the early 8th grade. I had to unlearn virtually everything I had been taught at the Brethren school. What made this an issue was the public school could prove what they were saying and the religious school couldn't. Several of the pioneers in the sport are still alive. Lew Sanborn, for example is still vertical. I also suggest you contact the USPA directly.
