  1. It is unsafe to have hard openings for whatever reason, whether it's sloppy packing, not slowing down before deploying or whatever. I know of several people who have had dislocations/fractures from hard openings. I know of one person who is a quadraplegic from a probable hard opening (he doesn't quite remember, it was a night jump). I've put a pocket slider on my Sabre 150 after the occasional hard opening (one brusied rib) none of which were from deploying in a track. Be careful. Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. The big guys in the front took the brunt. On the wing the first picture in the series had them at the pilot's window; after a few minutes or so they had been moved back to were you see them in this picture. Exits were a piece of cake except the horizontal stablizer went by kind a close. A fun time was had by all. Until I can figure out how to reduce the file size you can see it there.   8. What I remember about a fatality on a Wonderhog around that time (there were so many at C.G.) was that the reserve ripcord had been lost and replaced with a metal (regular) ripcord. A fray in the metal cable caught in the fabric channel preventing the handle from being pulled. :-( Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166

  12. Yep, that's the one he used when he jumped into the pool. Ben was upset and didn't want to ground him for life like he'd said he would because Larry was on staff. So he had to jump T10's for a month. I remember him landing next to me on one of those jumps and his peg stuck in a gopher hole and he just went BONG; I swear I could hear the vibrations
  13. I've done a couple jumps on a double-keel and as I remember it was the one that could go into reverse. This was 25 years ago so there is a good chance I'm blowing smoke but that's what I remember. We were putting students out on double-keels and had several land in the lake (after the 1st or 2nd Elsinore flood) and at first we thought it was only women that had this happen (blondes?). They would steer away from the lake and land in it. Naturally we were wrong. My only jump on a single keel ended successfully after I promised God I would never jump another single-keel again. I was jumping a Parafoil 252 (too big for me then) and wanted to experience what was so good about the Paradactyl. Small toggle movements (seemed?) to cause very radical/violent canopy movements/folding. It was also a turbulent day and all in all I was glad to get it over with

  18. About 20 years ago there was a fatality at Perris were a visiting jumper apparently had a main/reserve deployment (no one saw it). He cut through his reserve risers using a very large knife he had carried; ended up with nothing usable. Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166

  20. I was in the parking lot having a beer with Dirty Ed when Ugly went in. I was standing at the stairs if the Twin Otter, props turning, boarding an AFF student when the Cessna went over the Otter and tried to take out a 4 way dirt diving by the DC-3. Never saw it coming.   24. Dan Piynter can give you personal advice, he banged himself up VERY badly doing it. The loading that occurs on the canopy s it's being towed is different than when it's freeflying and causes the nose to tuck under and fold up. Not something you'd like or survive at low altitudes.   25. As an addendum to Bill Von's post: Take a pair of shorts and put them over your legs straps so your sitting on them. They will act as a skid plate if you go down on your butt. BE SURE THEY ARE SMALL AND DON'T INTERFERE WITH YOUR MAIN CONTAINER FLAPS AND HAND-DEPLOY. These are small shorts, fly toward your backside. Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
