  1. I put around 500 jumps on my first piggyback a Starto Star Wedge container w/ a Starto Star naturally and an unmodified 24' round as the reserve. Never had a cutaway but I lent the rig to a friend so he could make his 1st square jump in 1975. Well, we didn't do much in the way of checking him out; hell, we where still pretty new to these things and never mentioned/thought about end-cell closures which happened a fair amount of the time but were no big deal. He thought otherwise and used the shot and a halfs and landed my reserve. I was a little pissed but thankful he was OK. He said the cutaway went fine but that the reserve took a little while to open. The reason was the the MA-1 pilot chute still had the temp pin keeping it compressed so nothing left the container until he rolled unto his side. The temp pin alos put a hole in the apex of my reserve. Well, we showed this to Gary Douris who was the manager at the time and he got that devilish grin of his (if you;ve seen it you know what I mean) and called the guy who'd packed the reserve and told him to get his ass over to the airport because the FAA wanted to talked to him about the bounce caused by his pack job. Well, when he got there he found out the mistake he'd made and that the call had been a lesson for hm to learn. He did; I'd let him pack my reserve again. Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. 2. Actually, he had already had plenty of hardware in his lower extremities because of the motorcycle racing he'd done. This was just more efficient. Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166

  6. ADAM_ASHWORTH, Hell you already know that you can come back from a serious leg injury, go for it. Rt ankle compound w/ 5 pins and 2 plates removed after a year or so (18 yrs ago); I agree w/ councilman :-( Rt tib fib 2 plates 9 screws removed after a 1 or so (11 yrs ago) Lt tib fib spiral fracture (this once was non-jumping related) w/ 2 plates and 11 pins. Still in and the most comfortable of the bunch (but I better not break it again). Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166

  9. Mike, Handbury never had a riggers license and yet he built many rigs/canopies. Did he just use Douris' ticket? Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  10. Here's a look at it :-) Early 80's after a flood at Elsinore we moved to Bear Valley. Using some of the first student piggyback gear a T10 was drapped over the tail at 3500'. Plane crashed in 32 seconds with the pilot having some control . Student cutaway to resrve 5 others walked away. Pilot cut face? Tom Sanders took the picture. Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. 15. Ok, let;s see if I can remember this I showed up at Elsinore in '74 w/ 10 jumps; the Perkins family owned it. About 77-78 Jacque Istel bought it. 1979 (late like December) or more likely Jan 1, 1980 Leo and Ed took over and within 2 weeks (or a month) the whole place flooded. We moved to Murrietta for 9 months until the water went down and rebuilt Elsinore and operated for another 9 months until it flooded again and we moved back to Murrietta for (9 months?) and then back again and you guessed it flooded again. (I may be off a flood or two). We then moved to Hemet where I worked for up to 6 months and then left. About 6 weeks after that a FJC student went in and Hemet closed. I ended up at Hemet in 1988 after leaving Elsinore (for non-flood reasons); although it flooded again w/o me about 6 months later. Sounds confusing doesn't it

  17. Hi Son, Many years ago I had a bad day. I was doing 30 ways and blew up my canopy. I asked around and a friend had a canopy he just got back from the shop; it was a 7 cell made out of a 5 cell. I told you it was a while ago. They'd added 2 cells to the center and my friend was looking for someone to maybe test it out. He had under a hundred jumps. I made the jump and the center lines broke at the attachment points, I cut it away and landed a Handbury reserve. No one else was going to lend me a canopy so i had a beer. The 'new' cells had been added but the lines weren't bar tacked. It happens. Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  18. I remember them from Elsinore in middle last 70's. But I'll bet it goes back further. Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  19. Congratulations you wait is over. Many people wait years wondering whether they'll handle a malfunction properly. Ypu already have. Now, think about this. What if you had a slow speed malfunction, i.e. something like 3-4 line broken but the canopy seems to fly OK. What should you do? (These are much more difficult than a high speed malfunction). Will the canopy continue to fly OK with this damage or will it degrade the closer you get to the ground? You and spend a lot of time second guessing situations like this. That's the problem, time. You only have a finite amount of time available and you should use it wisely. Do your checks and if you're still not DEFINITELY sure then it's a malfunction. Indecision is over. Do your emergency procedures. Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  20. "Disagree with this policy. You never improved anyone's performance by preventing them from practicing for 30 days. " It's not to prevent them from anything, it's just to make sure they have enough time to gather/think about the information/skills necessary to make sure it doesn't happen again. They should have had the information from the beginning but seem to lack the skill part.. NOTE: I said information NOT HARDWARE. Just because you got hardware doesn't mean you have the skills. 21. Ask them. They've either heard it before or will someday. Communication is a good thing. I've had people blow the exit and then settle down and do a super fine jump from there. I'd much rather have you blow the exit and recover then go unstable at pull. You know what you need to do (you've done it well already) you just want to work on consistency. How many minutes of freefall do you have so far: under 4 minutes? Did you learn to drive a car in 4 minutes? Think about how good you've done with the limited amount a time in the air that you've had. Put it in perspective; you'll be fine, do as your instructors and taught you. 22. At this point you'll have (should) depend on people you know (your JMs) or a local rigger. Used gear is a really good way to get your first rig because you can generally sell it after 1 year or so hen your skills develop and you have a better idea of what you want. But getting that first rig is like buying a used car. How can you kick the tires? Talk to someone you can trust who has a few years (hundreds of jumps) in the sport. You'd do best buying something similar to what your using on your student/rental jumps (size wise) but this depends on your weight/skills, etc. Optionally, you could look at Rigging Innovations Genera or Altico's Dolphin. (I like Genera). If you have any specific questions I;d be happy to help. Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166

  24. Another issue that I heard of was that the material would wear at the edges of the plates (where you couldn't see it easily) which could cause it to hangup Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
