  1. Happy Birthday, Pat! You where the first skydiver I ever talked to. Thanks, Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  2. Back in the 70's I remember a guy came out to Elsinore with a camo jumpsuit and a machete strapped to his leg jumping a PC. Don't know if he ever used it. A few years later I remember hearing a story of a European jumper at Perris with a large knife/machete who had a malfunction and managed to sever his reserve risers during a malfunction and went in. Be careful out there :-) Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  3. 20 years ago I did a night demo into Elsinore High School for a homecoming game and used magnesium pyro. When I was back at the airport packing the police showed up saying they had reports of a plane that went down on flames. Go figure :-) Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  4. Congratulations Pat, You were the first person I every talked to in the sport, over the phone, who knows what would have happened if it had been in person :-) Jan was one pf my first J/Ms at Hinkley. I've read all the Skydiving related stuff you've written; eve paid for most of it. The sport has been better because of you, thanks. And keep telling more stories, even if you have to make them up ;-) Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  5. The first person in the sport I ever talked to (on the phone) was Pat Works. Jan J/M me on one of my first jumps and 'Whitey' was my FJI. Betty Girrusso ran manifest on weekends sometimes and I eventually became friends with them too, 10 years later at Elsinore. Fortunately, I never met Pat until about 10 years later :-) and we became friends, although I still have problems understanding just what he says; although it sure does sound 'purdy' :-) It's a shame to lose any DZ but this one had a lot of history. Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  6. And who can forget that holiday favorite 'The 12 Days of Jumping" On the 1st day of jumping my true love gave to me.... :-) Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  7. jeannie (always w/ a small j) died in the late 70's (1977?) at Elsinore jumping a pull out. (as I remember) The pud had come undone/unvelcroed and she spent the rest of her life looking for it. She's been ridiculed for having a couple of low openings for the same thing during the past couple of weeks :-( She was a pioneer of the sport. Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  8. Boston Market's 500th store opening, Brea, CA One of Santa's RainChickens (Prancer). Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  9. They don't make them that way anymore. A story I remember is that he was a Ranger in Nam and the intel guys had a picture of a funny looking clearing that they wanted someone to look at. RT's platoon jumped w/ RT lowering his dog on a line before landing. It was a trap and only RT and another guy survived and were taken prisoners. They spent 6 months in a bamboo cage in North Vietnam. Don't remember how the 2nd guy died but RT escaped and made his way down through the DMZ and back to safety. Only a very few did anything like that. He as always fun and interesting and a great friend who will be sorely missed. Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  10. It was at any of the Freak Brother conventions when we all.... Gee, I forget but I know we had fun..... and then there was time we.......but we had fun then too....and then....... Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  11. Howard, That's me on the left and Tom 'Animal' Fredrikson center and you're right Kevin on the right. This is what happens when the weather isn't too good and you start drinking boiler makers around 9:00 AM. Let that be a lesson to you younger kids Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  12. Old Man, I've attached a picture of the Dwarf Tossing Competition Judges at the Convention in Quincy, IL in 1990. This was during deliberations. As a note, we found that the female dwarfs tended to not slide as far as the male dwarfs Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  13. OK, Mr. Bauchen, If you don't call me Mr. I won't call yoju Mr.. I feel old enough already. Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  14. That all depends :-) 20 was pretty high but it really depended on how big your landing area was and how good a spotter you (or someone) was. You spotted for the round reserve. Landing tips: Good medical coverage (although I really never needed it until I started jumping squares) Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  15. Bill, Just adding to your advice. Back about 76-77 a few of us went to Lake Elizabella one weekend for promised water jumps. Of course the winds stayed at 25+ all day. One of my buddies, Paul L. decided to go for a land jump because the water jumps where caled off. He had a PC Guess were he landed Yep (you knew it was coming), in the lake and started leaving a wake like a speed boat. A real speed boat finally overtook him and brought him back. He never got too wet because he was being pulled on his back by the PC. A week or 2 later I asked him whether he'd gotten his reserve (piggyback) repacked after drying it out and he said OH. When the ripcord was pulled nothing opened; it was a solid brick; luckily he didn't need it before he got it repacked. Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166

  17. Yeah, Cal City, of course, how could I have missed it? Of course Hank was always rather strange; but wait you all have been really strange now that I think about it...... then there was that time I was in the hospital when the terrorists took it over and the Seals had to come in and rescue me...... I use double-strength Alcoa foil..... Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  18. My God Nick, It all fits! I always knew there was something odd about Pat. You've explained it! And you know Gary Douris' knowing smile, I'll bet him, too!. Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  19. I can remember going down to the military surplus store and looking for MA-1s, cheap Ran across the spiders, too. I can remember we'd take the metal out of the material and we'd throw the thing at telephone poles and they'd stick pretty well. We never thought about using them ourselves. Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  20. Terry, I always loved Freak Brothers..... I was in line to get some hang over relief and watched that particular jump Later that afternoon I was in line again and watched a low time jumper (30 jumps?), whose boyfriend talked her into driving across a couple of states to jump there, have problems deploying her main and went in in the corn.... and then I called home and found out a former student of mine had gone in at Perris that day, too! There were better days....
  21. - The owner/operator must submit a passenger manifest for each flight to the TSA. How is TSA going to handle this deluge of information? and what could they possibly to with it? The only use it could be would be after the fact. Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166

  24. John Dixon was doing things with ground based video about this time. He was in the Navy and took the first film of me in the air using 16mm gun camera. That was about 74-75. Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
