  1. Add me to the list, tooo! Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  2. I spotted a Skymaster (push/pull) from 20,000 after a eternal ride sucking on a hose which didn't have any oxy anyway. Spot was good, 3 way by 14,000, taken out by 13,500 and the next thing I was ondering was why the guy below me was waving his arms so soon. Looked at the altimeter and it was 3,500 already. Everyone landed in the peas with most on a PCs. Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  3. 1. Pretty sure GW were awarded in 60's but that's before my time. 2. 1972 10 way Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  4. Unfortunately you've mixed them up. The young women who had the run in with the sewage treatment pond (Southeast of Perris) is a chiropracter in Socal. jeannie, unfortunatley played with a disloged pud (about '76/'77?) on a pullout to impact after being razed a week or 2 before for pulling her reserve when the pud got lost. Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  5. At some point (before my time) Jacque Istel gave Parachutist magazine (the name/format?) to USPA. I remember hearing this but don't remember anything else. Now were the hell are my glasses? teeth? pants? What was I saying... Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  6. Diito. Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  7. I'm pretty sure Lizard flew back seat too. And if I remeber he got to eject out of 2 of them. Your tax dollars at work. I also remeber a really hairy round reserve landing he did at Elsinore one time in high winds at he top of a power line pole where he cutaway (with a knife) his reserve to keep from being fired. He was quick and good. Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  8. While my first jump at Hemet was the end of June in '83 so my guess is sometime in July/August. But it was a while ago Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  9. At or just after he sold the DZ he remaked to me he was doing something with restoring cars. This was before the "Center of the World". Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  10. I've got to think that Istel bought Elsinore from Florance Perkins when Cy Perkins became very ill, about 1977 maybe 78. Jacque Istel had dream of making Elsinore into SkyWorld a recreational activity area with aircraft, balloons, hang gliders and parachutes. It didn't come to pass. I'm pretty sure Leo took over from PI 01/01/1980 and had less than a month of not very good weather before havong to move. Fllod waters were8-9 feet in the hanger and we had the student records in the upstairs classroom and had to raft in to get them. You may be thinking of one of the opther floods later int he Eighties. There was at least one in the nineties maybe two. I've got to think Elsinore is the most ofen flooded still operating DZ around. :-) Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  11. Actually, Jacque sold the operation of the DZ at Elsinore to Leo Orlowski just before the flood. Our grand opening boogie was rained/clouded out and it didn't stop much for quit awhile after that. We moved to Temecula for 9 months came back to Elsinore and rebuilt only to be flooded again another 9 months down the road. The operation then moved to Hemet and folded after a 1st jump student fatality. A run of bad luck Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  12. I heard of a master rigger i AZ in the early eighties? who hand a hand deploy reserve. The pilot chute pub was just over his left? shoulder. If he needed it he just reached back and let fly. Don't remember ever hearing if he had to use it. Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166

  14. Spraky, It was a creak in one of the blades on the left engine. The blade left as the plane started picking up speed....guess what happened to the left engine when all that rotational energy got unbalanced. Anyway once the engine was gone the gasoline was still being pumped and the exhausts start it on fire. Skipper got it stopped and everyone exiting in an orderly manner, under Chet's watchful eye. Bob Butt left his frap hat in the plane (a good reason to wear your helmets for takeoff) and it was lost. Jerry Spenser took the footage and later sold it to someone and that's what you keep seeing. Mikey Quasniak(sp) was along for the ride and he and Skip had to exit thru the crew hatch on top of the cockpit. They went down the top of the fusilage and off the right wing root while the left side was fully engulfed. It didn't take long for the plane to be totally gone, aluminum burns pretty well. The next day the skeleton was about 1/3 normal size because of shrinkage and it's buried along side the runway. We lucked out, another 30 seconds and we might have lost 30+ good friends. A few weeks later someone found the prop blade a 1/4 1/2 mile away. I was in the parking lot having a beer with Dirty Ed when we heard the engine noises not be right and noticed the smoke and came over to watch the show. Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. 15. My firstr reserve ride was a total (I packed it) on a 5-10 second delay. I rolled over on my back and pulled the ripcord and nothing happened. I then pushed the side of the container just liked been instructed and the non-pilot chute canopy deployed. I think my heels hit the back of my head Then I got really scared. The occillations were so bad I thought I was going to die. I grabbed the rear risers (this was an unmodified 24' twill) and tried to dampen them but it only got worse. When I got to the ground I 'oscilled' just right (through no fault of my own) and had one of the softest landings (or maybe it was the adrenaline) of any round landing. 16. I used to log my jumps in RPMs. It took me 48 jumps to get off student status and another 20 or 30 to finally figure out what relax meant Yes, that was 30+ years ago but gravity stills works the same. Keep trying and you'll figure it out. Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  17. I also worried about refracturing with the metal in. I've heard that if you do the same area the metal will shred stuff So I had the 2 plates and 5 screws taken out about year or so after they where put in. The arthritis is a pain but that's got nothing to do with taking the metal out. The next fracture was 2 plates and 11 pins in the rt leg. They were uncomfortable too, out they came. I've had a couple of plates and 11 pins in the lt leg and I've left them in; they are almost unnoticeable. I've decided that I shouldn't be breaking anything anymore Once you have the metal taken ut you;ll need a few months for the holes to file in and that part is probably stronger than the original. Good Luck. Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166

  19. High Pat, Remember me too! (I live in a large village) Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  20. Well Pat you;ve been busy today Here's a picture of Timne Broadwick taken about 1977 in Elsinore. The girls she's with did a demo into Chino airport for the airshow that Tiny was the guest of honor for. She was around 83 at the time and thought everyone should be paid to jump.

  22. I'd have to agree with Sparky. All the times I've been picked up I was treated very well. God bless EMTs and especially nurses Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
  23. My first reserve ride was on a 24' QAC and was because of a total I managed to pack on my B4 container. The open wasn't quit to terminal but not too far off and I did think that my heels touched my head. The scariest part however was the incredible oscillations, I thought I was going to slam into the ground at a 90 degree angle. I tried to dampen them but nothing seemed to work and I just left well enough alone. Thankfully, I 'oscilled' just right and had one of the best round reserve landings I ever had. I then got a 4-line release (Elsinore 4 Line release #1) and naturally never used it again.
  24. Well son, How did you get the packing table in there? Red, White and Blue Skies, John T. Brasher D-5166
