  1. That is pretty stupid, IMO. If an AFF student on his first jump points at my chest strap while in the airplane and tells me that it is not properly routed I would blush, say thank you and shut up. I have 260 jumps. I hope I keep thinking and behaving like that my whole live. This "unwritten hierarchy" is not an excuse to have an idiotic attitude, neither being sloppy in your procedures. This. An improperly routed chest strap can kill the jumper, which fucks up the DZ, which fucks me & my buds up; and I might even give a shit about the life of the jumper even if he is a sophomoric asshat. Can it also let his rig shift around more on his body, increasing the chance his pilot chute might come loose in the plane, go out the door and kill all of us? Maybe. Does it reflect an attitude that if he's careless about that, he's probably also careless about protecting his handles and his PC in the plane? I think so. So I'll tell him about it. If he doesn't like it, he can bite my ass. Sometimes I'll notice a newer jumper eyeballing my chest strap in the plane because he's learned it's the right thing to do. I'll nod or say thanks to encourage him to keep doing it. Fuck the hierarchy. Another +1. I don't think naming the "unwritten hierarchy" is off - just that it is a corollary of the skygod/a**hat/ego mentality. We're just talking past each other here.
  2. Not my point. My point is, if the country isn't a shit hole people want to flee because war ends or whatever, it tends to become better over time and people don't NEED to flee. The country of Vietnam today is FAR better off now than the mid-70s. I haven't heard of a boat full of people fleeing from Vietnam in awhile. Consider though that many of these countries are sh*tholes and always will be, but due to remote locations (e.g. inner African countries), they can't easily "boat migrate" like other countries. We can't "fix" every sh*thole country out there and if geography isn't an argument, then why don't we just go in and pick up some more remote potential migrants, you know, just to be fair and all.
  3. Fine with me. It will keep us busier for a season or two. Edit: I think it was 2:02 minutes and 4:02 minutes if I recall correctly. I had a 3 min freefall yesterday.... ....with a Havok Carve from 15K.
  4. I just linked the judgement to the comment section of an article mentioning noise complaints about NorCal Skydiving in Cloverdale.
  5. And a leg by one of our own members here. Wouldn't it be cool if all those families who lost their loved ones, and all those maimed servicemen and women who lost limbs or worse could at least get free gasoline for life from the companies that got so many windfall profits from the destabilization of the oil markets abroad and when a Barrel of oil jumped from $20 to over $100 a barrel from the companies run by SMALL OIL that all of the PNAC members of the last administration orchestrated with their control of thousands of marginal wells in the inter-mountain west?? It looks like all that purported support by the GOP dried up rather quickly and all those patriotic Americans who actually signed up on the dotted line are just another line item budget to slash because its not actually about taking care of the troops or supporting the troops.... Its all about supporting the military INDUSTRIAL complex that IKE warned us about. Its about those congress critters getting nice cushy jobs in defense contractors companies... or cushy consulting gigs or lobbyist positions. Murica... +1 Preach it, woman.
  6. Do you actually live in Cloverdale or Lake County or Santa Rosa area? I'm in Rohnert Park and jump in Byron mostly (or Skydance). How many jumps do you have now? Close to 30? You might want to think about investing in gear soon to avoid rental costs...and buy used. You'll "out grow" new quickly. I've never had a new main or reserve.
  7. Well, you had 10 females vote here, and the votes were split 50/50 between like/dislike. So that kind of disproves your theory, doesn't it? Or maybe skydivers have different licorice taste preferences than office workers... Uh.....yes?
  8. This is all I could find: https://beamglobal.s3.amazonaws.com/sites/505757e5851916549a000002/theme/pdfs/pdfs/Brands_List_043014.pdf So it is made (or the brand owned) by the Japanese company that bought Jim Bean. It's not even shown in the brand categories on the beamglobal.com site - only on the pdf. There used to be a wikipedia article, but it was deleted in 2012...as if it's some deep dark secret. Weird. Find the stores that specialize in all things alcohol.... like this http://ledgersliquors.com/?page_id=61 OR.....surf these although I am seeing a preponderance of places that GFD would have known about with lots of wine. http://sf.cityvoter.com/best/liquor-store/food/bay-area/2012 I applaud you for the research, but you're incorrectly assuming I actually care about finding After Shock. I was more opining on not seeing it anymore.

  10. Hmmm...that could be interesting. S A M B U U U U U C C A How is it different from ouzo? I think I've tried sambucca, but not sure...it's been a while at least. Pretty much the same.... but it is Anise.. not the real stuff from Greece. After the Byron Boogie days I changed over from the cinnamon [RED]Aftershock[/RED] (for California boogies) or Goldschlager at other boogies on less shakey ground. Mandatory to take a nice big long draw on the bottle, feel the burn.... and utter....... S A M B U U U U U C C A Is Aftershock even available anymore? ITSM to me that it disappeared after the 90s.
  11. Ok...since I don't think I'll get much more female response here (so I'm not afraid anymore of "leading" the responses), I'll spill the beans. My vague hypothesis/speculation/notion/whatever is that females tend to hate black licorice/anise...maybe due to genetics? All 6 females in my office HATE it. To corroborate Amazon's opinion, our Controller said (when discussion licorice flavored jelly beans), "They taste great because they taste like ouzo!"
  12. Sorry for the drift, but, does anyone remember "Red Eye". Popular in the 70's it was a red licorice liquor. Back to the Poll..... I'm very disappointed there is no Boobie option? This site is going to hell in a handbag. My sincere apologies. I will make sure to add that option in future polls.

  15. This looks like a pretty good article summarizing the (California) situation. http://www.vox.com/2015/4/10/8379221/california-drought-water-crisis
  16. Hmmmm....need more female responses. Unfortunately I don't hang out on any message boards with a large female population.
  17. Yes, I'm aware of that. If I were to give any information, wouldn't I end up leading the results (and in steering them to be unbiased)?
  18. Just testing a vague hypothesis...
  19. She was one the smart, sane voices in the documentary "Inside Job" on the financial crisis. I hope she is still smart and highly regarded.
  20. Yes, you're right - we DO have no fucking idea. But she really was a HUGE dick about it and not just "a bit". I mean twitter post with hashtags (I don't even really know what all those mean/how they work) to assume the subway officer's intentions? Total ass move!
  21. Add on to it that a lot of their consumption isn't even metered, so it's only an educated guess how much water they really use. Hard to even charge a "market rate" if we don't even know how much is really used. I hope that PhD student at UC Davis finishes their dissertation soon so we can find out how much is really consumed (I read about something of the sort a year or so ago).
  22. Bill, stop being so logical and concise! Sheesh!
  23. What's weird to me is that ISTM that most that harp on this issue think that Hetch Hetchy actually contains a lot of water. It doesn't. The reservoir only has around 350K acre ft capacity - only a tenth the size of Oroville, the #2 size reservoir in the state. It's all about environmental/beauty restoration and not water capacity.
  24. Everyone whines about the almonds, but alfalfa is responsible for more overall water usage and can be grown anywhere, whereas almonds from my understanding do particularly well here. Alfalfa grows anywhere and is only being used as a feed crop for cows anyway. But for the record, I'm 100% in favor of building large-scale desalination plants and modern nuclear reactors to power them. If Israel can do it, we can do it. +1...but we still don't need to grow as much almonds and pistachios as we do ("just because" isn't good enough when the resources aren't available). About 2/3 of the almonds/pistachios grown are sold to China (or other Asian countries). Further on alfalfa, I think read that a significant portion of what is grown also gets shipped to feed cows in Asia as opposed to our own.
  25. You know, I hear that 80% is consumed by Ag! What's with that? And ya know...I was hoping we can discussion solutions to reduce that Ag usage.
