  1. Location or word of mouth. I went to the closest DZ for my 1st jump. Then when I went to complete AFF, I went back to the same DZ even though there was one closer. I think if someone has a friend who has jumped at a somewhat nearby DZ, they are more likely to jump at that same DZ, or jump there when visiting the area.
  2. I would go skydiving, and wait until I had a lot more jumps (at least 200) and maybe a few more birthdays before BASE jumping. You could always plan ahead and go for your birthday next year, or the year after, or... Of course first getting the required practice skydiving, doing the drills under the parachute you're going to BASE jump (or one very similar), learn all you can from your friends, learn about the gear, and then maybe even actually taking a FJC would be the recommended route. http://www.snakeriverbase.com/GettingIntoBASE.pdf http://www.crmojo.com/adobepdf/fjccanopy.pdf

Yeah buddy, that was a sweet jump
  6. You're probably thinking of this incident http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=post_view_flat;post=2248776 He had something out.
  7. If you take the deal, you'll want to BASE jump and not be able to, and that will drive you crazy for the rest of your life. If you want to BASE jump now, it's an easy decision. Since you're already married the money probably gets shared anyway. From your first post it sounds like you've already been thinking about it, so if you get the new gear now, in a few years you'll get bored with it and keep watching BASE videos and wanting to try it. You could always just get the other stuff when you can afford it later if you decide to BASE jump first. Of course BASE is a personal decision and you need to be okay with it, and the consequences to your family and friends. Only go for the deal if you've already decided never to try it, and even then I wouldn't do it, just in case you later change your mind. You shouldn't need encouraging from anybody else but yourself to BASE jump.
  8. Maybe as in creating lift, so he can land it, without the chute..? as in discovery channel was going to pay for jeb to try his wingsuit landing thing... but he went awol, and they didn't want to waste the money they spent on developing the suit? In case you're serious, I think that stunt was sponsored by Go Fast http://www.gofastsports.com/zone/wingsuit.html If you search Jeb's posts you can probably find more info about it.
  9. I did my AFF at SMB a few years ago, and since then I've jumped all over Nor Cal. Some people only jump at one DZ, others like me will mainly jump at one but if there's something going on at another DZ I'll go there. Let the rest of us know when there's an event happening there. There's a forum on here called events and places to jump just for that reason. Who's the rigger at SMB now? I haven't jumped at SMB in a while but I'm glad to hear you guys are having fun there. The view is great when the sky is clear, and that plane is insanely fast. I don't think all of ACS hates SMB or vice versa, as I know a few people, including myself, who would jump at either. Of course, some people, only jump at one and hate the other. My advice, once you feel ready to leave your home DZ, is to travel around and try out the other places. You can spread the good word about SMB yourself over at Hollister or elsewhere. Some of the employees might not like the competition, after all, a DZ is a business for some people.
  10. I've seen bigger snow cocks. I don't have any pics, but I'm sure they're out there.
  11. Anything in Norway. The beers in most bars and restaurants run around $10 US, the grocery store sells the cheap ones for about $5. You can get them much cheaper if you buy them at the Stavanger airport duty free shop. The 8 or 9 DUI beers and other drinks cost me around $5,000, not including the increase in insurance rates.
  12. Attempted a hybrid. It usually seems like the 100th and 200th jumps don't usually go as planned, but they're still fun. I had already done a naked jump, but I still have to do a naked BASE jump before or when I hit 100.
  13. It's the only way to keep the damn thing folded. It's also so you feel even cooler pulling it out of your wallet, then out of the sleeve, then show it to people when you're drunk at parties.
  14. 748/605=1.2 When I was almost to 1:1 I was trying to post less and jump more, but by now I've given up and admit I'm a post whore. At least it's still lower than my wing loading of around 1.7
  15. http://www.cypres2.com/cypres2faq.htm How can you be so sure that the CYPRES 2 battery will last 4 years? What is so different that allowed you to get rid of the 2-year battery change requirement? I don't see how this could be from more efficient electronics alone. Is the battery a new technology type? If not, why no 2 year limit? - one of the many items in the list of requirements for CYPRES 2 was "no battery hassle at all for the owner", it took a long time and a lot of effort to find the solution - you are correct in thinking that it is not only the electronics - without being rude, we have to say that the information is proprietary, and that we just can not explain all technical details about CYPRES, as there are those out there that have an interest that is more than just to satisfy their curiosity, sorry - for that matter who said that CYPRES 2 even used a battery and that it only lasted 4 years? :-) Seriously, why is the CYPRES 2 battery good for 4 years? - for the user, the power supply of CYPRES 2 is actually "good" for the 12 year lifetime of the unit (as long as the 4 and 8 year maintenance are performed) - as far as the technical particulars, again, sorry as this is proprietary http://www.cypres2.com/userguide/CYPRES_2_users_guide_english.pdf 1.4 Power supply No attention is needed to the power supply of CYPRES 2. The unit is designed to function from the date of manufacture until the first maintenance, from the first maintenance to the second maintenance, and from the second maintenance until the end of life without limitations concerning the number of jumps. If CYPRES 2 should cease to function due to a faulty power supply prior to the maintenance due date, Airtec will take care of this with the highest priority.
  16. I thought it kind of funny and not overly offensive.
  17. http://www.dropzone.com/safety/Gear_and_Equipment/index.shtml Does your DZ have a gear store? Start by buying the accessories. Do a few more jumps on rental gear until you find a canopy size you'll be on for a little while, then look for a used rig.
  18. IMHO, It's best to stop line twists as soon as you see or feel them about to happen. Many times I feel like I may have twisted up if I wasn't fighting them on risers or in my harness. I usually stop them by shifting weight or trying to twist my body the way the canopy is twisting, instead of the canopy and your body going in opposite directions, leading to line twists. Don't pull down on risers or toggles when you are in line twists, but pull out on risers to stop or remove the twists, and bicycle kick your legs to change your twisting momentum. Don't try to do anything to your canopy until the line twists are out. After the twists are out, you can stop a spin by first pulling down on a rear riser or shifting weight to one side of your harness. If you can't stop the spin using rear risers and harness, then unstow and use your toggles once you're out of the line twists. All the time keep an eye on your altitude and if you're getting close to your hard deck and don't have time to kick out of the line twists (or don't have a landable canopy for any other reason), then cutaway regardless if you're spinning or not. You may get line twists on your reserve (I was unstable when I chopped and did), but as long as the reserve is not heavily loaded it is less prone to line twists being 7 cells, rectangular, and a low aspect ratio. Once your reserve is open, do the same thing to try to get out of the line twists if you have them. Following proper emergency procedures and arching while cutting away will lower the risks. Jumping a lowly loaded canopy like a Spectre will lower the chances for severe line twists or rapidly spinning malfunctions, but there are no guarantees in this sport, and Spectres and reserves do malfunction.
  19. I jump a Cypres and Cypres 2, because Brian Germain and Shannon Pilcher are in the ads in Parachutist.

    No Bowl

I missed it because I was skydiving. It was a great day at the DZ. There wasn't too many people jumping though.
  21. flygirl1 made mine. I bought a pin, she went to the bead store and matched my rig colors. BASE 1224, Senior Parachute Rigger, CPL ASEL IA, AGI, IGI USPA Coach & UPT Tandem Instructor, PRO, Altimaster Field Support Representative
