  1. Here we go. As far as I can see, Cypres is 90's technology and can't be trusted without a 4 year check up. Vigils are a later design. The batteries last much longer and the device is reliable enough that the self test is considered adequate. The M2 is newer yet, and is even less power hungry. It does no have any leds flashing at turn on, possibly allowing the battery to last longer. AADs are basically small electronic computers connected to a cutter. I'd rather have a 2011 designed circuits than 1992 circuitry. Cypres is the only one currently having problems with faulty electronics. But skydivers are a conservative bunch and many believe that the older nearly obsolete design that can't be trusted more than 4 years is somehow better. Maybe because the total cost of ownership is nearly twice as much. Must be twice as good right? Airtec spends a lot of money on advertising, some of it has been downright nasty toward the competition. They can afford this because of the high price they have been able to charge for many years on a product they haven't updated much in years. And when they do update components they have been known to fail to do enough testing. They currently have thousands of known defective units in the field and are asking their customers to be patient while they take 4 years to fix them. At the customer's expense no less. Why would anyone choose a CYPRES? Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  2. Ok, but still twice as much as the $85 CDN that I give to CSPA. ( includes 1 million 3rd party liability insurance) Glad to hear that plain blokes can afford to jump down under! But I would note that your$170 AUD would buy you about 5 jump tickets in Canada and 7 in the USA. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  3. Australia and most of Europe are the Nanny States. This happens where governments allow parachute associations to be regulatory agencies. Just say no to Nanny States. So far both USPA and CSPA have no regulatory functions. You don't need to belong or follow their rules to open a DZ. You can keep your coherent enforcement. The only people who benefit are bureaucrats who get jobs paid for by exorbitant membership fees that are mandatory in those countries. And costs that keep skydiving pretty much an upper middle class activity. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  4. I don't know how your name became known. I do know that skydiving is a small world. You didn't really think you could carry on here in the manner that you have and remain anonymous did you? Although this is an electronic forum it's not like the gamer culture you come from. It's real people who really skydive and really know what they are talking about. Your identity will become known and people at DZs will be watching for you. So you better be able to walk the walk like you talk the talk. I guess it doesn't really matter what your name is. You are here and trying to be controversial which I also like to do. Like you I sometimes find hypocrisy in some people's over reliance on arbitrary jump numbers. But I can't take you too seriously when you don't fill in your profile accurately and don't use your name. If you can't stand behind your opinions publicly they don't matter much. This is the real world. Stand up for yourself like a man. Don't hide like a boy trying to play in a grown ups world. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. 6. You won't be jumping any camera in my part of Canada with 50 under your belt. I don't know who told you that. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  7. I don't know where the cutter is. I do know that RI has revoked approval for the Argus in all it's containers. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  8. I don't have that many tandems. Only 125. Once I got over anxious about getting the drogue out on an unstable exit. I tossed it at a slightly iffy time and felt it bounce off my foot and then deploy cleanly. I thanked the deity that I don't believe in profusely and learned the lesson that I needed to be patient and do the work to correct the situation first. I hope not to have to learn too many lessons the hard way. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  9. Yes Wendy, as usual you are correct. I get sooo tired of people at the DZ tryng to tell themselves and others that the drive out is more dangerous than the dive out! Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  10. Possibly they might find value in sponsoring a talented VRW team in which some members flew more conservative canopies. They make money on Safire twos as well. They have a full line of products and are in all the major market segments. It's unlikely they forced him into the choice he made. But due diligence on their part should have told them it was a dangerous choice. They sponsored his team for commercial reasons and made an error in judgement. Now it's up to you and all of us to let them know how you feel about that if it matters to you. It's no different than Nike sponsoring Tiger. If Tiger gets in trouble the brand suffers. Hold their feet to the fire and they will respond. Don't buy the brand, don't recommend it to others. That is how sponsorship works in the marketplace. Just because we all love our small world does not mean that we have to support every company all the time. They probably are jumpers there as well, but money is the prime motive. Make them pay and they will stop. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  11. Ya, and the next email will ask you to send the cash by wire transfer. I think you understand the danger here. Hint: always use Paypal. And if the seller is legitimate he will be able to provide the name of a DZO and a rigger as references. And of course there's always escrow services as others have suggested. $3220? oddball number there There is no reserve listed here, but assuming there is one this offer is for one year old gear at approx half of it's new value. This kind of deal falls into the "to good to be true" category. Gear generally depreciates at a rate of about 10% per year, maybe 20% in the first year. 12. This expresses very well what I mean by "luck run out". If any of us relies on being lucky we won't last long. The luck I'm referring to is merely short hand for having circumstances beyond our direct control coming together and harming us. Murphy, or Lady Luck, or bad Karma, it's merely an expression. None of them really exist except in our minds to explain the unexpected. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  13. I needed a Dolphin updated so I used the contact info on the new page. Aggie got back to me right away and gave me an address to ship it to. I don't know about new production, but they are definitely doing updates. This is within the last 2 weeks. Ken Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. 14. I see you have filled in some info on your profile and provided a name. That's a good start. If you want co-operation from this group you will need to gain our trust first. Providing more detail about why you need this info, and what institution you are studying at, along with the name of the professor and contact information for both yourself and your school would help. Even then you will find skydivers to be a tight knit group who are very careful about giving up injury information to outsiders. In other words you will need to convince us that you are not doing research for a lawyer. Ken Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  15. We have one of those canopys with no brake settings as well. I avoid it in favor of an EZ for this very reason. A canopy in full flight with line twist is definitely harder to get fixed than one in brakes. I would say though that sticking your leg out should work the same back or front to the wind. You just need to use the opposite leg. Then switch legs as you rotate. (if you rotate) Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.

  17. It's called sensory overload. It's normal, but affects different people to a different degree. It will go away when your brain learns to cope better. Even when you are able to maintain an arch you will find that you have no memory of exactly what happened at exit. This too will improve as you get used to it. All you can do is try to stay calm and focused. A very deliberate pause just before the actual count and exit helps some people. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  18. I guess it does happen that way sometimes. But more often than not it's a person generally considered "safe" who has an accident. We do indeed have too many canopy incidents involving testosterone charged young men under small canopies that they are not ready for. But all to often it's someone not particularly at risk who just runs out of luck or unexpectedly screws up. It's a very unforgiving sport. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  19. Pretty much everyone in the sport believes they are "safe". What a crock. Skydiving is not safe, ask your mother. What you believe is safe is different from the next person. Safe is not what we do. Lowering risk to allow for survival is what we do. We have rules that are a framework. Different people will select different risk levels within that framework. Some will make choices you would not. Just like you made choices your mother would not. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  20. What this video really shows is the danger of flying camera before you are ready. How much attention do you think dude devoted to he camera on the ride up? But not enough to basic gear checks. But the major thing is that because there is video, we all get to see how poorly he handled the situation and trash him. Without the vid he could have made up some excuse for the AAD fire. But no, now the whole Dizzy world knows the truth. Just another reason to get some experience before adding complications. 21. I like the idea, and I want to agree. But I also want to note that skydiving itself is probably one of the most selfish activities the people engage in. Then again, since we are all selfish anyway you are correct. Sometimes my thinking can be very circular. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. 22. Putting a canopy into a steep dive and then leveling out just in time to land is and always will be an inherently dangerous maneuver. As we all know. The small margin for error and the constant need of people to push the envelope harder and harder means that we will continue to see our friends hurt themselves. No amount of regulation short of banning will change that. And banning swooping would also be wrong. All we can do is what we are already doing. Be vigilant and make sure that people understand the danger and encourage the sometimes lacking common sense. Just say no to regulations and committees. ma·neu·ver Noun A movement or series of moves requiring skill and care: "jumps and other daring maneuvers". 23. Just as dangerous as you are imagining. But this is the wrong forum to learn about it. Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
  24. If you add a coating you will change the dimensions of the parts. The inside diameter of rings will become smaller with unknown consequences. I would not pack it. But the ultimate authority is the manufacturer. Check with them. I am curious about how you apply this coating. Are you planning to take the harness apart to remove the hardware and then sew it together again? Ken Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. 25. Indeed! You on the other hand seem to have a firm grip on the concept of safety. As do most people in this sport who have enough life experience to remember Firesign Theater! Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
