Woo Hoo!! Game on, brother. I challenge you to open a Compaq, HP, Gateway, eMachine, Dell or any other component assembler and tell me the difference. In the early days, eMachines (not unlike Dell, Gateway, et.al) got a bad rep for using inferior components for market penetration, but have since moved to the more mid-stream manufacturers. Bottom line - its about brand loyalty now. If one want's a PC where the R&D is done in-house, then we gotta go with Toshiba, Sony or Mac. IMO the one's I mentioned previously are all 2 year disposables. Buy it, fire it up, work on it for a couple of years, toss it and move on. Cajun, eMachines are fine. I believe Gateway just bought them (unless they've since sold that unit to HP). Anyway, for what you're wanting to do the eMachine low-end bundle will do you just fine. Couple of tips. 1. Purchase just the "box" for around $399.00 2. Invest in a better CRT 19" monitor. I've had some good luck with the Viewsonic "A" series. High resolution, ultrabrite and picked mine up at CompUsa for around $229.00 3. If you go with the eMachine, remove all the bundled software crappola and install only the software applications you want to use. 4. Buy a bus memory card. Run your applications off the computer, save your documents to the flash card. When not saving take the flash card out of your computer. You'll get a symphony of opinions about what to buy and why. My why for the eMachines is; at the speed at which everything changes, I view hardware as a disposable item. Rather than upgrading and all that stuff. I take the position that every year and a half or so, I'm going to yank out my Bus mem card, destroy the hard drive and buy another $399.00 - $500.00 machine. As you know from being a pilot, there is a considerable gap between reading about flying and being able to fly. It is performance-oriented training. Just as landing an airplane is half knowledge and half feel, the same is true of skydiving. Having said that, your pilot skills have given you a good foundation for landing the canopy because you'll be taught the same landing pattern procedures albeit at different altitudes. In addition, your desire to read about expectations prior to performance is also to be commended because you'll have greater retention during class resulting in less performance anxiety. There is one source I would recommend you start with and that is the Untied States Parachute Association's "Student Information Manual," commonly referred to as the "SIM." Thanks for the compliment, Mar. In a classroom setting, I am very comfortable. During presentations where I've had time to prepare, I do well. My concern was with the media and that certain flaw I have of missing that special filter between my brain and my yap when asked a stupid question. I doubt the class was directed at you because you're a skydiver as much as it was because you were available. I remember when these little class McNuggets were mandated and someone had to go because it was a directive that "X" number had to attend to fullill and the compliance report could be sent upstairs and everyone felt better. When the Captain told me I had to attend the 3 day "Public Affairs" class, I asked him, "Sir, do I even look like the Public Affairs type?"
