  1. Nice is a relative term in the world of sales. Right now the only thing that he is concerned with is getting a certain price for his vehicle. Don't worry about it, there are way too many vehicles out there to be upset after looking at one. The question that I have for you is: how much difference in price were you talking? $1000? $2000? Did he move at all? The primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to prepare for and to prevail in combat should the need arise.

    DAMN ANTS!!

Go to Home Depot and buy a bag of "Amdro". It is in the pest control area. The ants will pick up the little pieces and it destroys the colony. Ants suck donkey balls, but the Amdro should take care of it. If not there are some other types of poison that work well with ants. The only way to get rid of them is for them to take the poison back to the colony and kill the females so that they stop reproducing. Also remember that as the colony grows they will take over a lot more real estate. If one of your neighbors poisoned a part of the colony they will retreat to a safer area which may be your yard/house. 3. My tips for dealing with private parties are limited. In all the time that I was selling cars I never bought a car outright from an individual. Depending on the price range of the car, I would look at a dealership. I would have a hard time buying a car from a private party for the plain fact that the individual is trying to get more money out of the car than they would if they traded it in. The market appears to favor an outright purchase from a dealership, and here is why; When a wholesaler buys a car at the auction they invest a certain amount of money into a unit. The wholesalers are extremely careful not to get too deep into a car because then it becomes difficult for them to unload it. If they have to let a car sit on a lot for 90 days or more, they are losing a significant amount of money (most don't own the cars outright, they finance them just like you and I do). So the breakdown there is that they tend to make a deal on an old age unit that is unheard of, merely to get out from underneath it. The wholesalers also own the cars for significantly less than what the book value is (or they would never make any money), so it makes good business sense for them to let some of the cars go at a much lower profit margin if they can just turnover the units. If you can imagine paying interest on a huge note to just have the vehicles on the lot, you can imagine that there is a little bit of motivation to move the units. Also, some of the units that they get a hold of are in incredible condition (moreso than the douche bag down the street), and they are inspected and repaired before going out on the lot for sale. The used car manager hates what are called "we owe's". It is another method of negotiation to get exactly what you want. If there is something wrong with the car and they are unwilling to move on the numbers than demand that the things that are found wrong on the vehicle are fixed. Anyhow, back to the point, the used car manager hates the "we owes" because the expense come out of the departments bottom line. So the wholesalers tend to buy good units that require very little repair. I think that is covered. I want to point out that there is a caveat to all the info that I am giving you is that it pertains to reputable name brand dealerships. The bandit dealerships and buy-here-pay-here dealers are fly-by-night dont go there off limits type of stuff. Bottom line is that if you aren't in a hurry to run out and buy something, you can spend a lot of time checking out literally hundreds of cars. Find the right unit (treat it as a product until it is bought and in your driveway, then fall in love with it), then drive a hard bargain. Salesmen also hate what is referred to as the 3rd wheel. Get someone to come along with you and talk shit the whole time ("that car isnt worth that" and stuff like "we can go to this other dealership") it puts a ton of pressure on the sales guy. I have even gone so far as to get one of the other sales guys to take them for an extended test drive so that I can negotiate a deal (I hate 3rd wheels). The private individuals have less motivation to make a good deal on a used car. The dealers want to sell you a car. They are in it for the money, but they also have a reputation at stake. Another thing for you to consider is to go to car dealerships after hours and look around. It gives you the opportunity to shop without the pressure of having a sales guy on your ass while you check out the vehicles. On every car there should be a sticker in the window that tells what the unit number, or stock number is. Write down the number and call the sales department and get info on the car without ever going in and being assaulted by the sales staff. When you go on a dealership, be non-commital at first. They will be less apt to try to overprice a vehicle. A trick that we used was a code on the window sticker that told us what the book value was. By overpricing a little bit, it gave us the room to back out on the numbers without losing margin. If I thought that someone was non-commital I would try to entice them by pricing under the book value, then changing units (I am a devious bastard aren't I?). 4. Never count cash in front of someone until the deal is worked out. Negotiation is like playing poker, don't show your cards until you absolutely have to. I wont go into all the stuff leading up to the sale. I think that you have a good idea as to what to look for, and taking it to a mechanic is something that should be done. When it comes down to negotiation, maintain control of the situation. Salesmen are trained that as soon as they can gain control they will make a sale. If you are looking at a dealership make the salesman work for the sale. If he/she tries to show you a car that you don't like, don't even sit in it. Tell them that it is not what you are looking for. (when I sold cars, if I could get someone to get in the car and go for a test drive I would close at least 50% of those deals. National closing average for a salesman talking to someone on the lot is about 25% for just saying "Hi") IF you arent trading a car in, just buying one outright, they are going to negotiate less. A lot of profit is made on the trade. The biggest money maker for car dealerships is not the sales floor, it is the Finance office. Good F&I managers in large metro areas have a base salary of over 100K a year. They are worth thier weight in gold. I worked a amall dealership as an F&I manager and covered the nut for the entire store for several months. Let the sales guy pencil the first deal, then hit him way under where he is quoting you. Make sure that when you test drive the car that you inspect every square inch of it. When he looks at you like you are crazy for low-balling him so badly, just tell him that if the car was in perfect condition that it "might" be worth what he is quoting you for a price. But since there are these things (list a few of the deficiencies) wrong with it, the car is at best worth only ______. Then, do not allow him the opportunity to talk, just tell him that if he wants to "earn" your business that he will make the deal "reasonable". If he is any good, this is where you go back and forth over the price. A bad sales guy will run for the "boss". This is your opportunity to haggle. He should always try to meet your price, if he doesn't, get up and walk out. There are literally thousands of cars out there that match what you are looking for, so don't lock in on a particular car. Falling in love with a specific car will get you screwed because you arent thinking rationally and will jump a lot deeper in something than you want. What ever you do, maintain control. Say things like, "do you have some water?" and tell him to bring the car around to meet you in a specific spot, tell him that you want to drive the car overnight or for a few days so that you can see how it fits into your life. If he gets overly intense, say that you forgot to make a call and pull out your cell phone and call a friend reminding to do something mundane (like take out the trash), it will blow his momentum. I can keep going on here for pages and pages, but let me know what if this helps. I have literally sold hundreds of cars, as a finance manager I negotiated every single car deal that came through the store. I have a ton of experience. 10. I bought a laptop from the Dell outlet. It is the inspiron 710m. I havent had any problems with it, and I have had it for the better part of a year. My only complaint was the XPhome that came on the thing. I have upgraded the OS to XPpro and have absolutely no problems with it. I bought gateways prior to this and had some serious hardware issues, but nothing with the Dell. If you check the Dell Outlet website, you will see exactly what they have out there. A lot of what they sell at the outlet is either scratch and dent, or cancelled orders. They also sell refurbs. Mine is a refurb. Nothing is going to be perfect, but if you can save a few hundred dollars and get an identical item, it might be worth looking. As far as PDAs. I dont know anything about Dell PDAs, I have a palm. 11. Billy, I am a firm believer that people should not be allowed to go to Home Depot or Lowe's or any other home improvement store until they pass some type of licensing exam. Most people have no idea how to do a job a right. I am amazed at how many times I have had to spend additional time and money fixing someone else's "handiwork". 18. There are a lot of people that have a hard time learning to skydive. If it was easy, it probably wouldn't be any fun at all. In my opinion, skydiving is to make us push our limits....live outside the comfort zone. If you are too comfortable, you aren't progressing. Anyhow, if you read Wendy Faulkner's website she had plenty of problems learning to skydive. She is one of the best skydivers that I know, and she is a world record holder CRW dog. It took her 48 jumps to get through her training. http://crwdog.servebeer.com/CRWdog/Welcome.html Her training logbook is at the following link:http://crwdog.servebeer.com/CRWdog/HowCRW.html I hope that she doesn't mind me linking to her website....
